Coping with cracked tooth syndrome.

Cracked tooth syndrome typically poses a diagnostic challenge for the dentist. Symptoms include tenderness to biting on certain foods, often poorly localized, and occasional thermal sensitivity. Knowing where to look for this entity, especially in the mandibular molar region, can be especially helpful. Treatment of the tooth depends on the degree of pulpal involvement and the extent of the crack. Cuspal coverage is required of all cracked posterior teeth that are retainable. Root canal therapy is included if symptoms persist or if pulpal pathosis exists at the outset. Cracks extending beyond t

Cracked tooth syndrome in an unrestored maxillary premolar: a case report.

Cracked tooth syndrome is known to occur most frequently in heavily restored teeth. Nevertheless, when the symptoms occur in intact teeth, there is difficulty in obtaining a correct diagnosis because it is difficult for the dentist to find where the crack is located. This clinical report describes the diagnostic procedures and the direct bonded composite restoration used to restore an incompletely fractured unrestored maxillary premolar in a 22-year-old female patient. To achieve a correct diagnosis, the following were performed: periapical and bitewing radiographs, percussion and thermal vita

Saving the split: protocol for an umbrella review on therapeutic approaches for cracked tooth syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Cracked tooth syndrome (CTS) is challenging to diagnose and manage due to its variable clinical presentation, resulting in inconsistent conclusions across existing reviews. Although several systematic reviews have investigated interventions independently, the evidence remains disparate, highlighting the need for an umbrella review to consolidate the different pieces of evidence and address any inconsistencies, thereby informing clinical recommendations. METHODS: This umbrella review will include published systematic reviews and meta-analyses focusing on treatment for CTS. Various

A multi-centred clinical audit to describe the efficacy of direct supra-coronal splinting--a minimally invasive approach to the management of cracked tooth syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: This audit looked at the use of direct composite splinting to manage cracked tooth syndrome (CTS). METHODS: Patients who had been assessed as having CTS were offered the treatment of a directly bonded, composite overlay restoration placed in supra-occlusion. Cases were reviewed up to 3 months later. RESULTS: In all, 151 restorations were followed up in the audit of which 131 were successful at 3 months. The remaining 20 restorations failed due to pulp complications (11), failure of the composite (5) or intolerance to the high restoration (4). Of the 131, patients described transi

Optimization of Results for Cracked Teeth Using CAD-CAM System: A Case Series.

Different restorative techniques have been proposed for the treatment of posterior teeth affected by cracked tooth syndrome (CTS). However, the literature is scarce in protocols of how to solve CTS using ceramic restorations made by computer aided design-computer aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) system. CAD-CAM provides a fast and efficient restorative treatment usually in a single visit, reducing the risk of contamination and micro-infiltration of the cracked line. The objective of this work was to describe 3 clinical cases of cracked teeth, which presented vertical fracture lines in different d

Biomechanical perspectives on dentine cracks and fractures: Implications in their clinical management.

OBJECTIVES: The present review discussed the biomechanical properties of cracks and fractures in crown and root dentine and attempted to explain why cracked teeth and vertical root fractures are so frequent despite the existence of multiple crack toughening mechanisms in dentine. The implications of this knowledge were used to justify how these defects are managed clinically. DATA, SOURCES AND STUDY SELECTION: Literature search was conducted on PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus for a narrative review on fracture mechanics of crown and root dentine as well as the clinical management of cracke

[Analysis of difficulties in diagnosis and treatment of cracked tooth and research progress].

The occurrence of cracked tooth is closely related to the abnormal occlusal force. The cracks existing on hard tissue of tooth cannot be self-limiting. As long as the external force exists, the cracks would continue to expand, involving the pulp, periapical, and periodontal tissues, ultimately leading to splitting and tooth loss. Due to the lack of objective indicators to identify cracks, the clinical diagnosis is difficult; due to the uncontrollability of crack propagation and individual differences, the treatment prognosis is uncertain, thus, clinicians are usually confused in choosing the t

Periodontal and endodontic perspectives of vertical root fracture: A case report.

A 35-year-old patient reported with sharp pain on biting and sensitivity to cold concerning the first right premolar. On recording the history, clinical examination and tests such as vitality, bite test, transillumination, periodontal probing and radiographs a diagnosis of cracked tooth syndrome (CTS) was made. The root canal treatment was completed, but the patient did not turn up for the coronal restoration, resulting in a vertical root fracture and extraction. VRF's (Vertical Root Fracture) are more commonly encountered following endodontic treatment. Also, in teeth without endodontic treat

A method of crack detection based on digital image correlation for simulated cracked tooth.

BACKGROUND: Early clinical cracked tooth can be a perplexing disorder to diagnose and manage. One of the key problems for the diagnosis of the cracked tooth is the detection of the location of the surface crack. METHODS: This paper proposes an image-based method for the detection of the micro-crack in the simulated cracked tooth. A homemade three-axis motion platform mounted with a telecentric lens was built as an image acquisition system to observe the surface of the simulated cracked tooth, which was under compression with a magnitude of the masticatory force. By using digital image correla
