Craniofacial fibrous dysplasia.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to report the clinical characteristics, radiological imaging methods, and management of patients with fibrous dysplasia. MATERIALS-METHODS: A retrospective review of 12 patients. Distribution of the cases according to the clinical and radiological features was described. RESULTS: The age range was from 9 to 55. Sphenoid bone was the most common involved area in our cases. Simple cystic degeneration was observed in three cases and aneurysmal bone cyst in one case. CONCLUSION: Radiologic findings are characteristic but not pathognomonic. Our management is t

[Craniofacial fibrous dysplasia].

Fibrous dysplasia of bone is a benign, uncommon, sporadic, congenital skeletal disorder resulting in deformity. This disease arises from activating somatic mutation in GNAS which encodes the α subunit of the G stimulatory protein associated with proliferation of undifferentiated osteogenic cells resulting in marrow fibrosis, abnormal matrix production, and stimulation of osteoclastic resorption upon overproduction of IL-6 observed in dysplastic cells. Fibrous dysplasia may be monostotic or polyostotic. This mutation affecting many tissues, café au lait skin macules and endocrinopathies (precoc

Craniofacial fibrous dysplasia.

Fibrous dysplasia is a benign localized bone disorder of unknown aetiology in which endocrinopathies, abnormal pigmentation of the skin and mucous membranes may form part of the disease. Five cases involving the facial and cranial bones are described to illustrate the various presentations and radiological appearances including computerized tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. Some of these cases demonstrate that serial radiology may be adequate for diagnosis and management without the necessity for histological confirmation. The place of limited surgical treatment for the craniofacial s

Craniofacial fibrous dysplasia.

This article describes a 20-year-old man with widespread polyostotic fibrous dysplasia that resulted in massive craniofacial deformity with unilateral exorbitism and oronasal obstruction. The patient illustrates the rare occurrence of fibrous dysplasia with major malformation of the face and skull, requiring multiple stages of surgical "sculpture" to improve function and appearance. The disease entity, differential diagnosis, and treatment are discussed.

Inherited craniofacial fibrous dysplasia.

Craniofacial fibrous dysplasia occurring in a mother and two of her three daughters is reported. In all three patients, the condition was characterized by extensive bilateral and bimaxillary involvement. All patients exhibited radiographic evidence of abnormal maxillary and mandibular bone and tooth displacement. Morphologic examination of deciduous teeth from the daughters showed replacement of normal pulp tissue by fibro-osseous lesion. Because of the familial occurrence of the cases, it is proposed that they comprise an example of inherited craniofacial fibrous dysplasia.

Craniofacial polyostotic fibrous dysplasia.

Three cases of gross craniofacial polyostotic fibrous dysplasia are presented, together with a brief review of the condition, and pertinent points regarding the cases are discussed. As complete excision of the lesion and immediate reconstruction is rarely feasible or possible, and partial excision may result in accelerated growth of the lesion during the patient's active growth phase, resection only to protect, maintain or restore certain important functions (e.g. vision) during this period are advocated, after which close follow-up is mandatory until the lesion becomes quiescent, when further

Imaging of craniofacial fibrous dysplasia.

Fibrous dysplasia is a relatively common disorder of bone. It may affect the bones of the face and skull and, in so doing, produce a wide variety of clinical presentations. Plain film assessment of craniofacial fibrous dysplasia may be difficult because of varying appearances and complex, overlapping structures. The MRI appearances of fibrous dysplasia are often non-specific and may be confusing. Findings on CT are also variable, but more commonly lead to a specific diagnosis. This is because of the characteristic ground-glass appearance of woven bone, seen on CT in most if not all cases of cr

Craniofacial fibrous dysplasia of orbit.

Fibrous dysplasia is a benign, rare, and idiopathic skeletal disorder characterized by replacement and expansion of medullary bone by disorganized fibro-osseous tissue. Treatment for these lesions is usually sought for cosmetic or functional reasons. The surgical approaches vary from watchful expectancy for the lesion to stop growing after puberty to conservative resection to radical resection. In this case reports, 3 patients with craniofacial fibrous dysplasia involving orbital region underwent surgery. In these primary cases, resection and immediate reconstruction were performed to regain f

Craniofacial surgery in fibrous dysplasia.

Cranio-orbital fibrous dysplasia usually causes proptosis, visual loss, ocular motility impairment and cosmetic deformity. The goals of cranial fibrous dysplasia management are to preserve neurological functions and improve cosmesis. Strict neurological and ophthalmological follow-up and early cranio-facial surgery enables non-aggressive treatment without significant morbidity. Furthermore, good results are achieved thanks to new techniques and materials especially in children and adolescents. The aim of the present paper is to discuss surgical indications, techniques and outcomes of cranio-fa

MRI in craniofacial fibrous dysplasia.

Five patients with biopsy-proven craniofacial fibrous dysplasia underwent MRI with T1- and T2-weighted sequences and a gadolinium-enhanced T1-weighted spin-echo sequence. Low to intermediate signal intensity was usually seen in the largest part of the lesion on both spin-echo sequences, but smaller regions of hyperintensity on T1- and T2-weighted images and intermediate signal intensity throughout a lesion on T1-weighted images were also seen. All lesions enhanced but only two became iso- or hyperintense compared to fat. High clinical and pathological activity in three cases correlated with hi

MRI features of craniofacial fibrous dysplasia.

A 13-year-old female with a 4-year history of monostotic fibrous dysplasia had noticed a progressive proptosis of the right eye and diplopia on upward gaze for 4 weeks. A few years previously an incisional biopsy of the skull had verified the presumed diagnosis of fibrous dysplasia with recurrent bleeding into pathologic cystic bony structures of the skull. The patient was known to have craniofacial fibrous dysplasia with involvement of the frontal and intermediate cranial base, the posterior ethmoidal labyrinth, and the sphenoidal and maxillary sinuses. Eye examination showed a reduced visual

Ocular complications in craniofacial fibrous dysplasia.

Three cases of craniofacial fibrous dysplasia are reported, all presenting to the ophthalmologist first. They all had ocular complications due either to direct involvement of the orbital bones or to secondary complications. Sphenoidal mucocele is added to the other complications previously reported, and accordingly a classification of the various ways that fibrous dysplasia can affect the ocular structures is proposed.

[Craniofacial fibrous dysplasia: about six cases].

Fibrous dysplasia (FD) of bone is a benign, congenital and rare disease in which normal bone is replaced by fibrous bone tissue, resulting in bone deformities. It can affect any bone in the body, however craniofacial fibrous dysplasia is characterized by specific clinical manifestations, progression and therapeutic issues. The purpose of our study was to describe the diagnostic, therapeutic and evolutionary features of craniofacial FD. This study involved six patients with craniofacial FD followed up in the Department of Otolaryngology at the Principal Hospital of Dakar. The average age of pat
