Recognition of craniomandibular disorders.

Craniomandibular disorders often mimic diseases related to the ear, nose, and throat, so patients often seek the care of an otolaryngologist for these problems. After ruling out otolaryngologic disease, craniomandibular disorders should be considered in the differential diagnosis. If a clinical diagnosis is supported by history, symptoms, and clinical evidence, the patient should be referred in a timely manner to a dentist who is competent to manage the patient. In addition to dentists, other health care practitioners may be called on by the primary treating physician to aid in the diagnosis a

Craniomandibular disorders in psoriasis.

A questionnaire survey of all members of the Psoriasis Society of the Greater Helsinki area was carried out to determine the prevalence of craniomandibular (CM) disorders in psoriasis. 1517 (85%) of the psoriatic members responded; 1050 had skin symptoms (psoriasis; P) and 400 skin and joint symptoms (psoriatic arthritis; PA). The most characteristic CM symptom was pain in the temporomandibular joint area. A high number of subjective symptoms correlated with poor general state of health, stress, pruritus of skin lesions, occlusal parafunctions and impaired chewing ability. Patients with PA had

Correlation analysis of craniomandibular index and gothic arch tracing in patients with craniomandibular disorders.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Complex etiology and symptomatology of craniomandibular dysfunction make the diagnosing and therapy of this disorder more difficult. The aim of this work was to assess the value of clinical and instrumental functional analyses in diagnosing of this type of disorders. METHODS: In this study 200 subjects were examined, 15 with temporomandibular joint disorder. They were subjected to clinical functional analysis (Fricton-Shiffman) and instrumental functional analysis by using the method of gothic arch. The parameters of the gothic arch records were analyzed and subsequently compa

Craniomandibular disorders in the geriatric patient.

This paper represents a general review of basic age-related changes that take place in the craniomandibular apparatus and the most frequently presenting conditions associated with craniomandibular disorders (CMD) in the elderly. The evaluation of geriatric patients with signs or symptoms of CMD must consider (1) normal age-related changes in the craniomandibular apparatus and their impact on both normal function and responses to stress; (2) the role of dentition status and dental prosthesis in CMD; and (3) the contribution of malignant disease, psoriasis, arthritic conditions, pseudogout, gran

Are craniomandibular disorders a general health problem?

It has been suggested that the high prevalence of clinical signs and subjective symptoms of craniomandibular disorders (CMD) reported in many epidemiological studies mainly lie within the range of normal variation and do not indicate of a real health problem. However, other studies have shown an association between CMD and other disorders such as headache and neck pain. There also appears to be a marked association between sick leave and CMD. Successful occlusal treatment of CMD alleviates or eliminates signs and symptoms not associated with the primary diagnosis of CMD. The argument that CMD

Craniomandibular disorders in an urban Swedish population.

A sample of 637 persons was interviewed and examined clinically for signs and symptoms of CMD. Five percent reported daily headaches, and recurrent headaches were more frequently (P less than 0.001) reported by women (28%) than men (15%). Women more often (P greater than 0.001) had headaches upon awaking and in the afternoon. Face, eyes, throat, and neck were the most common locations of pain (20%). Women (18%) more often (P less than 0.05) reported CM symptoms than men (10%), and 16% of the women and 9% of the men considered themselves to be in need of treatment. About 20% reported oral paraf

Electromyography of masticatory muscles in craniomandibular disorders.

Patients presenting to the otolaryngologist with complaints such as otalgia, dizziness, tinnitus, or fullness in the ear may be experiencing the effects of craniomandibular disorders. These disorders can involve dysfunction in the delicate interrelationship of the skull, mandible, cervical vertebrae, and neuromuscular apparatus and can present as myofacial pain. Electromyographic recordings using surface electrodes were made bilaterally on the masseter, anterior temporalis, and digastric muscles in 641 craniomandibular patients, before and after transcutaneous electrical neural stimulation, at

[Stress, coping and craniomandibular disorders - a longitudinal study].

OBJECTIVES: Stress is widely accepted as an etiologic factor of craniomandibular disorders (CMD). There is, however, a lack of studies evaluating the significance of interindividual differences of stress and coping for the development of CMD. METHODS: 99 volunteers (33 male, 66 female) were observed over a period of 24 months. The clinical examination at the beginning and end of the observation time were carried out according to the protocol of the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (Dworkin 1992). Data concerning stress and general body complaints were evaluated twi

Craniomandibular disorders and somatosensory tinnitus-diagnostics and treatment strategies.

BACKGROUND: Somatosensory tinnitus (ST) is a type of tinnitus where changes in somatosensory input from the head-neck area influence factors of a patient's tinnitus. As there are often several influencing factors, identifying an evident somatosensory influence is challenging. As a result, not all patients who might benefit from ST treatment are referred and not all patients who are referred will actually benefit from ST treatment. OBJECTIVE: This article presents an overview of current knowledge on diagnosis and treatment strategies in patients with craniomandibular-related ST. MATERIALS AND

Quality of life in fibromyalgia patients with craniomandibular disorders.

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a rheumatic disease which affects fibrous tissues and muscles; it is characterized by chronic pain and it is often associated with craniomandibular disorders (CMD). 31 patients were assessed from March 2012 to October 2012 through the administration of specific questionnaires and following neurologic and gnatologic assessment. A relevant corre-lation between FM and CMD emerges from the present study, as 80.6% of our patients report CMD symptoms with high prevalence of myofascial pain (84%). Multivariate regression analysis revealed that the patients in the present study di

Occlusion splint therapy in patients with craniomandibular disorders (CMD).

The etiology of craniomandibular disorders (CMD) is multi-factorial and the treatment should be selected with recognition of the different factors. The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of occlusion splint therapy (Michigan splint), physical exercises and transcutaneous nerve stimulation (TENS) on CMD symptomatology. At the Clinic of Maxillofacial Surgery in Belgrade, in the period from May, 2001-December, 2003, 168 patients were examined by the CMD working group. This group, comprised of different specialties (maxillofacial surgeon, prosthodontist, orthodontist, neurologist, p
