Moral credentials and the expression of prejudice.

Three experiments supported the hypothesis that people are more willing to express attitudes that could be viewed as prejudiced when their past behavior has established their credentials as nonprejudiced persons. In Study 1, participants given the opportunity to disagree with blatantly sexist statements were later more willing to favor a man for a stereotypically male job. In Study 2, participants who first had the opportunity to select a member of a stereotyped group (a woman or an African American) for a category-neutral job were more likely to reject a member of that group for a job stereot

Medical specialty credentialing in the United States.

Specialty boards serve the function of defining qualifications and issuing credentials to assure the public of the specialist's preparation and skill. Over the past 72 years, 23 such boards have been approved and now issue 31 different types of general specialty certificates and 57 types of subspecialty credentials. For 50 years, the American Board of Medical Specialties has encouraged a system of recertification to demonstrate that the certified specialist has maintained skill and has incorporated the new knowledge associated with advancing medical science. Presently, 17 of the 23 boards are

Credentialing for critical care in small hospitals.

OBJECTIVE: To assess credentialing practices for critical care admissions and procedures in smaller hospitals within the United States. METHODS: A questionnaire was sent to credentialing coordinators of 500 randomly selected American Hospital Association hospitals with fewer than 300 beds. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Most hospitals validate qualifications for intensive care unit (ICU) admitting and procedural privileges through recommendations only. Fewer (16%) require a specified prior number of procedures to have been performed, and 9% require prospective supervision before privileges a

Neuroimaging Training Programs, Certification Pathways, and Credentialing Issues.

Neurologists have a unique ability to interpret neuroimaging in conjunction with clinical context and disease pathology, making their role vital in accurate interpretation. Neuroimaging education is essential for enhancing these skills, typically provided through neurology residency programs and specialized neuroimaging fellowships. Neuroimaging training experience in neurology residency programs can be quite variable. Neurology residents typically gain substantial exposure to neuroimaging techniques through the sheer volume of cases they encounter during training, often under direct guidance

Training, competency, and credentialing standards for carotid stenting.

Appropriate and adequate training is the hallmark of modern medical care. The foundation of medical education in the United States is accredited medical schools combined with formal residencies and fellowship training programs. This concept has been officially recognized by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education, the Federal Licensing Examination, all state medical boards, the federal government, and all medical professions and societies. Appropriate medical education is of utmost importance for procedures and therapies that offer the greatest risk to patients. There is little

Uncovering the Hidden Credentials of Brucella Virulence.

Bacteria in the genus Brucella are important human and veterinary pathogens. The abortion and infertility they cause in food animals produce economic hardships in areas where the disease has not been controlled, and human brucellosis is one of the world's most common zoonoses. Brucella strains have also been isolated from wildlife, but we know much less about the pathobiology and epidemiology of these infections than we do about brucellosis in domestic animals. The brucellae maintain predominantly an intracellular lifestyle in their mammalian hosts, and their ability to subvert the host immune

History of the Medical Library Association's credentialing program.

Since the Medical Library Association (MLA) adopted the Code for the Training and Certification of Medical Librarians in 1949, MLA members have reviewed and revised the program regularly. This paper traces the history of MLA's professional recognition program to illustrate how the program has changed over time and to identify the issues that have surrounded it. These issues include the value of the program to individual members, cost to MLA, appropriate entry requirements, certification examinations, and recertification requirements. The development and operation of MLA's current credentialing

ED overcrowding spurs interest in quality and credentialing issues.

Quality in emergency medicine is not a new concept. But applying quality principles to emergency department operations is another thing altogether. While the JCAHO and the American College of Emergency Physicians are examining quality issues in emergency medicine, individual hospitals are looking for solutions to the quality question. And they are accepting the reality that hiring and retaining high-quality physicians remains a key element.

Echocardiography practice issues: reimbursement, quality control, training, and credentialing.

With the major changes in the delivery of medical care brought about by "health care reform," the American Society of Echocardiography has become active in dealing with a variety of issues related to reimbursement, continuing quality improvement, training, examination, and certification outcomes research, and strengthening of relations with local societies. These efforts will undoubtedly continue to occupy a major role in the Society's agenda. The importance of cooperation among echocardiographers, sonographers, and other cardiac ultrasound professionals in ensuring the proper role of echocard

Factors influencing credentialing of interventionists in the CREST-2 trial.

BACKGROUND: The Carotid Revascularization and Medical Management for Asymptomatic Carotid Stenosis Trial (CREST-2) is a pair of randomized trials assessing the relative efficacy of carotid revascularization in the setting of intensive medical management (IMM) in patients with asymptomatic high-grade atherosclerotic stenosis. One of the trials assesses IMM with or without carotid artery stenting (CAS). Given the low risk of stroke in nonrevascularized patients receiving IMM, it is essential that there be low periprocedural risk of stroke for CAS if it is to show incremental benefit. Thus, crede
