This study establishes baseline parameters and examines those variables thought to influence cremains weights. Data were collected during the cremation of 100 individuals. A series of measurements was taken to determine relative skeletal robusticity. The weight, stature, sex, and age of each cadaver was recorded prior to cremation. The average cremains weight for the fully developed adults (n = 91) was 2430 g and ranged from 876 g to 3784 g. Male and female means were separated by 1053 g, but there was considerable overlap in the distribution. All cremains weights above 2750 g were male and al

Sex assessment in cremation contexts represents a key step for reconstructing funerary rituals and demographic profiles. However, the high degree of fragmentation and thermal alteration of skeletal elements significantly hampers this operation. Most often, the morphological traits of pelvis and skull are not preserved while the application of metric criteria follows those developed from modern reference series. We used a prehistoric Italian sample (n = 155) with gender specific grave goods as a proxy for sex and developed binary logistic regression and Bayesian models based on 21 postcranial m

Vertebrae and parts of joints from long bones from prehistoric cremations of the Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age are presented, showing marked deformations caused by pressure during cremation when bones exposed to temperatures of 400 degrees-500 degrees Centigrade display minimal hardness. The vertebrae with deformation of the arcus parts are only from the lower vertebral column; on account of the weight of this body region, this suggests that the corpse lay in the dorsal position at the place of cremation. The fact that there were deformed arches only on one side might suggest an irregular

BACKGROUND: The current standard of practice for cremating patients with cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) is surgical explantation before cremation to mitigate the risk of device explosion. This surgery may conflict with patient or family beliefs, whereas cremation of CIEDs may create occupational hazards.
OBJECTIVE: This study sought to establish an ex vivo model for screening CIED behavior during cremation.
METHODS: Seven CIEDs underwent testing including projectile/sound testing, impact testing, and gas analysis. In the projectile test, devices were heated until thermal fail

Cremation has seen a constant increase in popularity all around the world. Because of its extensively destructive nature, however, a series of medico-legal issues arise concerning identification, forensic autopsy, external examination, histological, toxicological and genetic exams to be performed not in the immediacy of death. The aim of this study is to compare the international legislation on cremation, seeking the response of various countries to their medico-legal issues. Several affinities but also some differences were found. Similarities include the need for a certificate by a medical e

Title 9, Chapter 19, Article 3 of the Arizona Administrative Code requires all bodies that are to be cremated must have the death certificate reviewed by a county medical examiner. In Tucson, AZ, and surrounding Pima County, all cremation requests are submitted to the Forensic Science Center, where the death certificates are reviewed by one of 5 board-certified forensic pathologists. In 2002, there were 5557 cremation requests, and in 2003 there were 5662 cremation requests. Of these requests, 670 (12.1%) and 447 (7.9%) death certificates were flagged for further investigation in 2002 and 2003

This article explores the changing meaning of cremation in late interwar Romania. From the opening of the Cenuşa Crematorium in Bucharest in 1928 to the collapse of the National Legionary State in 1941, debates about cremation moved beyond theological questions and became increasingly connected to religion, nationalism, antisemitism, and state power. Particular attention is paid to the clandestine cremation of twenty-four Legionaries after the assassination of Prime Minister Armand Călinescu in 1939 and to their exhumation in 1940. These events changed the symbolic significance of the cremator

Distinguishing between bone and non-bone material is the initial stage of forensic examination of suspect skeletal remains. This is particularly important, but more problematic, when examining disputed cremations. This forensic case study explores the application of visual, UV and elemental analysis of suspected cremated remains of pet animals. Visual analysis included sieving through the bulk for bone fragments, visual identification of bone morphology, color, texture and fragility, and reaction to UV fluorescence. Visual analysis showed that none of the 61 suspected cremations were comprised

The process of corpse cremation generates numerous harmful air pollutants, including particulate matter (PM), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and heavy metals. These pollutants could have severe effects on the surrounding environment and human health. Currently, the awareness of the emission levels of harmful air pollutants from cremators and their emission characteristics is insufficient. In this study, we obtained the emission characteristics of flue gas from cremators in Beijing and determined the localized emission factors and emission levels

Vitamin D deficiency has hugely impacted the health of past societies. Its identification in skeletal remains provides insights into the daily activities, cultural habits, and the disease load of past populations. However, up till now, this approach remained impossible in cremated bones, because temperatures reached during cremations destroyed all macroscopic evidence of vitamin D deficiency. This precluded the analyses of a large fraction of the archaeological record, as cremation was an important burial ritual from the Late Neolithic until the Early Medieval period in Europe. Here, the ident

This pilot study evaluates the feasibility and limitations of a multi-proxy approach for identifying potential indicators of horizontal positioning in cremated heads from archaeological, and to a lesser extent, forensic contexts. Two outdoor experimental cremations using fleshed and dry pig crania were conducted to evaluate the influence of pre-burning condition, vertical placement within the pyre and pyre dynamics on the expression of lateralised burning patterns. Combining macroscopic observations, fragmentation, colorimetric and Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy in Attenuated Total Re

The archaeological excavations undertaken at the Chalcolithic necropolis of Los Milanes have revealed a previously unknown variability in funerary practices in the south-eastern Iberia. For the first time, a megalithic tomb housed a large funerary deposit (28,740 bone fragments) of exclusively cremated human bone remains. For a comprehensive characterization of the funerary ritual, a cutting-edge multi-proxy approach has been undertaken including the osteological study of cremated bone remains, radiocarbon chronology, Fourier-Transform Infrared spectroscopy in Attenuated Total Reflectance mode

Accurate identification and analysis of signs of trauma on human bone is one of the mainstays of forensic pathology. However, when a forensic pathologist has to deal with charred remains, the task become extremely difficult, because tissues are subjected to severe morphological alterations and their assessment can be critically distorted. We analyzed 38 individuals with peri-mortem skull fractures due to falls from height (17 cases), traffic accidents (16 cases), gunshots wounds (5 cases), of which we had the demographic and clinical data and the autopsy report with the description and photogr

Atmaram bone (C2 axis vertebra) is usually handed over to the family of the deceased on the next day after cremation during the ''Asthi sanchaya '' commemoration. ''Asthi visarajan'' involves the practice of immersing the bones and ashes of the deceased in the Holy Ganges river as per Hindu beliefs. Atmaram bone, which usually does not burn during cremation, is handed over to the family of the departed (asthi sanchaya) after cremation which is then immersed in the holy Ganges river ( asthi visarajan). Atma means soul, Ram means Lord and Atmaram combined means the one who is Lord of his own sou

The accuracy of the sex determination of cremated human remains is one of the vital parameters for archaeologists and skeletal anthropologists dealing with cremations. Few studies have so far aimed at testing it. In the present paper, the accuracy of the sexing techniques was assessed by paralleling biological sex (identified morphologically) to gender (presumed on the basis of the grave goods which accompanied the deceased). A collection of cremated bones from East Lithuanian barrows (c. fourth/fifth--eleventh/twelfth centuries AD) was employed. The fragmentary nature and poor state of the bo

This article examines Naxi funerary culture through the interrelated dimensions of belief, ritual, and materiality, drawing on historical sources, publicly available visual materials, and online semi-structured interviews. It first reviews core beliefs, including the conception that humans possess three souls and the return of the soul to the ancestors, and traces the development of Naxi funerary practices from natural disposal and cremation to contemporary combinations of cremation and burial. Building on existing case records from the Sanba area, it discusses receiving the last breath, the w

AIMS: To determine the level of anthrax spore contamination in endemic regions of northern Canada between outbreaks.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Bacterial endospores were extracted from specimens via flotation and cultured on selective PLET medium. Of 588 environmental specimens collected, 11 (1.9%) contained viable anthrax spores.
CONCLUSION: High environmental concentrations of anthrax spores in northern Canada appear limited to scavenger faeces and anthrax carcass sites. Burial and cremation appear equally effective at removing anthrax spores from the immediate environment, though cremation may

Our objective was to describe a case of suspected relay barbiturate intoxication of a dog after ingestion of a rat that had been euthanized and frozen and then later burned in an attempted cremation. This case will be compared to previous reports of relay toxicosis. This report describes a dog that was presented to an emergency and critical care hospital because of lethargy and vomiting after ingesting remains of a rat that had been euthanized 2 wk earlier. The primary-care veterinarian had used a pentobarbital solution for euthanasia. The rat's remains had been frozen until the owner attempte
