Six men suffering from acute dermatitis had positive patch tests to Larrea (creosote bush). The lesions preferentially involved sun-exposed sites, simulating a photodermatitis, but also were on the legs and scrotum. Our findings were more consistent with contact allergy than with a primary irritant or a phototoxic response. The patch tests were also positive to Zuccagnia punctata. In two cases the exposure to the creosote bush occurred as a result of casual occupations, in two because of household remedies (moist compresses and baths), and in the other two as a result of burning the bush and r

The recycling of disused railway sleepers treated with wood preservatives such as creosote as exterior wood for use in gardens has recently become popular in Japan. Creosote contains high quantities of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and can lead to skin irritation and disease. In this work we have determined the amount of PAHs and water-extractable phenols in creosote and creosote-treated wood products such as railway sleepers and stakes for agricultural use that are either made or are procurable in Japan. PAHs were extracted with dichloromethane and analyzed by gas chromatography-ma

Anisakiasis is common in countries where raw or incompletely cooked marine fish are consumed. Currently, effective therapeutic methods to treat anisakiasis are unavailable. A recent study found that wood creosote inactivates the movement of Anisakis species. Essential oil of Origanum compactum containing carvacrol and thymol, which are similar to the constituents of wood creosote, was reported to inactivate Anisakis by inhibiting its acetylcholinesterase. We examined whether wood creosote can also inhibit acetylcholinesterase. We examined the effect of components of wood creosote using the sam

Through the history of railways, wooden crossties impregnated with potentially hazardous creosote tar, have been used for years. There are six major classes of compounds in the creosote: aromatic hydrocarbons; tar acids/phenolics; tar bases/nitrogen-containing heterocycles; aromatic amines; sulfur-containing heterocycles; and oxygen-containing heterocycles. The creosote molecules applied in railway crossties can be released in the environment and they can bioaccumulate in animals and vegetables. Some constituents (benzo(a)pyrene and phenolics like benzene) are considered as being carcinogenic

The purpose of the present study was to investigate histologically, histometrically and immunohistochemically the effect of formalin-creosote (FC) on the periapical tissues after pulpectomy in rats. Experiment I. Seventy-five rats were divided into 3 groups. In all Groups, the mesial root of the right mandibular first molar was removed. After pulpectomy, in Group A, a paper point containing saline was inserted into the root canal. In Group B, a paper point containing FC was inserted, whereas, in Group C, FC was applied and then a paper point containing FC was inserted. The access cavity was se

A thirty-eight year old man took about 180 tablets of Seirogan. He was unconscious and had dyspnea with dark brown urine on admission. He recovered gradually after initial treatment. Seirogan contains a phenolic component. Symptoms and signs of poisoning are unconsciousness, convulsion, digestive tract disorder, pulmonary edema, hepatic failure, renal failure, and miosis. Clinical features include dark brown urine. On day 7, he again showed signs of creosote poisoning: relapse of unconsciousness and dark colored urine. Plasma concentration of phenol determined on the day before the relapse was

Creosote produced from coal-tar distillate is an archaic, highly toxic wood preservative still commonly used today, predominantly in utilitarian applications (e.g., utility poles, railroad crossties, and marine pilings). Creosote consists of a mixture of carbon-based compounds, most of which are known human carcinogens, and its high persistence and leaching from treated wood threaten groundwater and soil. As the total phase-out of creosote-treated wood is a long-term goal, the development of retroactive coatings to mitigate leaching is a high-priority environmental strategy. This study reports

Anisakiasis and parasite-associated hypersensitivity remain important food-safety concerns where raw marine fish is consumed. Although wood creosote (WC) has been studied mainly for effects on anisakid larval motility, its influence on host-relevant epithelial responses to larva-derived products is unknown. We examined whether WC pretreatment of thawed anisakid third-stage larvae alters the biological activity of crude larval extracts in Caco-2 cells. Crude extract from WC-pretreated larvae (CEWC) was compared with paired control extract (CE). CE and CEWC had similar protein concentrations and

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in creosote products used for wood preservation are regulated in Japan. Although the analytical method for this regulation has been stipulated by law, two main problems have been highlighted, namely the use of dichloromethane, a potential carcinogen, as a solvent and inadequate purification. Therefore, an analytical method to solve these problems was developed in this study. Actual creosote-treated wood samples were examined, and it was found that acetone could be used as an alternative solvent. Purification methods using centrifugation, silica gel cartr

Cultures enriched by serial transfer through a mineral salts medium containing fluoranthene were used to establish a stable, seven-member bacterial community from a sandy soil highly contaminated with coal tar creosote. This community exhibited an ability to utilize fluoranthene as the sole carbon source for growth, as demonstrated by increases in protein concentration and changes in absorption spectra when grown on fluoranthene in liquid culture. Biotransformation of other polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was verified by demonstrating their disappearance from an artificial PAH mixture

INTRODUCTION: Anisakiasis is a common disease in countries such as Japan, where raw or undercooked marine fish are frequently consumed. The disease is caused by accidental ingestion of a live larva of Anisakis in raw or undercooked marine fish. In typical cases, it causes abrupt gastrointestinal symptoms, such as epigastric pain, nausea, and vomiting. According to a published report, the disease was alleviated by oral ingestion of an over-the-counter drug containing wood creosote.
METHODS: We performed an in vitro experiment to elucidate whether wood creosote can inhibit the motor activity of

Traditionally, chemical analyses are used in the assessment of contaminated soil and in monitoring the efficiency of soil remediation processes. We investigated if chemical analysis could be supported and even partly replaced by biological toxicity tests. In two case studies creosote-contaminated soil was composted outdoors in 5- and 100-m3 windrows. Degradation of polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was followed by chemical analysis and toxicity tests. Polyaromatic hydrocarbons were quantified and identified by HPLC. Because the soil was also contaminated by copper-, chromium-, and arsenic-conta

This paper presents a hybrid technology of soil remediation based on the integration of biodegradation and electroosmosis. We employed soils with different texture (clay soil and loamy sand) containing a mixture of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) present in creosote, and inoculation with a representative soil bacterium able to degrade fluorene, phenanthrene, fluoranthene, pyrene, anthracene, and benzo[a]pyrene. Two different modes of treatment were prospected: (i) inducing in soil the simultaneous occurrence of biodegradation and electroosmosis in the presence of a biodegradable surfact

A 56 year old aromatherapist presented with advanced renal failure following chronic coal tar creosote vapour inhalation, and a chronic tubulo-interstitial nephritis was identified on renal biopsy. Following dialysis dependence occult inhalation continued, resulting in seizures, ataxia, cognitive impairment and marked generalised cerebral atrophy. We describe for the first time a case of creosote abuse by chronic vapour inhalation, resulting in significant morbidity. Use of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon-containing wood preservative coal tar creosote is restricted by many countries due to

Anisakiasis is a disease characterized by an abrupt onset of sharp epigastric pain, which occurs typically a few hours after eating raw or undercooked seafood. Anisakiasis was a Japanese localized disease in the past, however has become an illness of concern in many countries where eating Japanese style raw or undercooked seafood has become popular. At present, the only effective treatment is an endoscopic removal of the nematode. Development of an effective medicine is expected. We report two cases of Anisakiasis, the symptoms of which were ameliorated after the administration of an over-the-

Anisakiasis has become more widely known because of the increasing popularity of raw fish consumption worldwide; it is the most common form of food poisoning in Japan. This foodborne disease has no specific treatment. Current treatments involve detecting and removing parasites that penetrate the gastric mucosa using endoscopy in medical settings. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of wood creosote (WC) on anisakid larval movement and viability in vitro and in vivo. Using two WC concentrations, 0.67 and 6.7 mg/mL, we performed in vitro and in vivo experiments to demonstrate the

This study evaluates caffeine-assisted aqueous extraction systems for the enhanced extraction of Σ16 US EPA priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from waste creosote-infused wood. Aqueous solutions of eight water-soluble organic acids were investigated with and without caffeine to assess its effect on PAH extraction. Caffeine improved extraction across all systems, but the extent of this improvement varied depending on the initial performance of each extraction agent without caffeine. Deionized water exhibited a negligible extraction yield (0.0027%), whereas caffeine addition increa

The influence of nutrients, Mycobacterium sp. strain CH1 and Mycobacterium sp. strain CH2 on the degradation of aged creosote hydrocarbon contaminants was investigated. The Mycobacterium sp. strain CH2 showed the highest positive influence on the degradation of three- and four-ring PAH compounds. The addition of Mycobacterium sp. strain CH1 had the second highest measured positive influence on the degradation of four-ring compounds. Soluble nitrogen and phosphorus also increased the degradation of aged creosote compounds in the contaminated soil. The addition of bacteria decreased the number o

Creosote bush (Larrea tridentata)-derived nordihydroguaiaretic acid (NDGA) was shown to have profound effects on the core components of metabolic syndrome. This study investigated the in vivo potential of NDGA for prevention or attenuation of the pathophysiologic abnormalities of NASH. A novel dietary NASH model with feeding C57BL/6J mice with a high trans-fat, high cholesterol and high fructose (HTF) diet, was used. The HTF diet fed mice exhibited obesity, insulin resistance, hepatic steatosis, fibrosis, inflammation, ER stress, oxidative stress, and liver injury. NDGA attenuated these metabo
