Anterior cricoid split procedure with transposition of cricoid cartilage segment.

OBJECTIVE: In order to improve the outcome and to reduce the post-operative care burden following the anterior cricoid split procedure, we modified the procedure to involve splitting only the cricoid cartilage, not the mucosa deep to the cartilage. In addition, we transposed the cricoid cartilage segment after division of the cricoid ring in the midline. CASE REPORT: We present the use of our modification in a 19-month-old boy with early-stage subglottic stenosis. RESULTS: The technique was performed in one surgical field, and the graft material obtained had the same thickness as the cricoid

Diagnostic Approach for Cricoid Cartilage Tumors.

BACKGROUND: Tumors of the cricoid cartilage are rare, with chondroma and chondrosarcoma being the most common histologic types. Clinical presentation is often insidious and symptoms usually appear when the lesion enlarges significantly or invades surrounding structures. Differentiating benign chondroma from low-grade chondrosarcoma remains challenging due to overlapping imaging findings and nonspecific clinical presentation. Histopathological examination following biopsy remains the gold standard for definitive diagnosis. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a middle-aged male patient wi

Multiple myeloma involving the cricoid cartilage.

We present the case of a man with dyspnea due to a mass in the cricoid cartilage that turns out to be an extramedullary plasmocytoma. Although the patient has a history of multiple myeloma, the disease only rarely affects the cricoid cartilage. Other subglottic lesions possibly involving the cricoid cartilage are squamous cell carcinoma, chondroma, chondrosarcoma and metastasis. The imaging characteristics suggesting extramedullary plasmocytoma arising from the cricoid consist of thinning and expansion of the cartilage laminae without mucosal lesions nor soft tissue mass adjacent to the cricoi

Congenital subglottic stenosis: the elliptical cricoid cartilage.

Various malformations of the cricoid cartilage produce congenital subglottic stenosis. The elliptical cricoid cartilage first was demonstrated histopathologically in horizontal sections of six postmortem specimens and now has been identified clinically in ten patients. The clinical diagnosis of the elliptical cricoid cartilage, suggested by anteroposterior soft tissue neck films, is confirmed at direct laryngoscopy. Delineation of the precise location, extent, and histopathology of subglottic stenosis provides the basis for rational management.

Lateral division of the rabbit cricoid cartilage: its effect on cartilage growth.

Laryngotracheoplasty often includes bilateral lateral division of the cricoid cartilage, despite the theoretical risk that cartilage growth centers might be located in the lateral cricoid. To investigate the effect of lateral cricoid cartilage division on subsequent cartilage growth, 60 five-week-old New Zealand white rabbits were divided into four groups of 15 animals each. Group I was comprised of unoperated controls. The remaining animals underwent anterior (group II), anterior and posterior (group III), and anterior, posterior, and bilateral lateral (group IV) division of the cricoid carti

Resection of the arch of cricoid cartilage and circumcision of the tracheal cartilage for subglottic stenosis.

Subglottic stenosis is a disease that causes dyspnoea by congenital or acquired stenosis of the cricoid cartilage and trachea. The cause of acquired subglottic stenosis varies. In this case, we present a case of idiopathic subglottic stenosis. Tracheotomies are performed in many cases, but they require long-term insertion of a tracheal cannula and make treatment difficult. In this case study, we performed a tracheoplasty by resection of the arch of cricoid cartilage and circumcision of the tracheal cartilage and implemented a cannula-free observation protocol.

[Histomorphometric characteristics of age-related changes in cricoid cartilage.].

The paper presents the results of a histomorphometric study of age-related changes in hyaline cartilage tissue by the example of studying cricoid cartilage from 88 corpses of males of various ages. A comparative assessment of the parameters between the groups was carried out and the dynamics of age-related changes in the main ones was studied. As a result of the studies, the greatest correlation with age was recorded in the following indicators: length (r=0,88) and width (r=0,89) of the ossification zone, the area of bone (r=0,87), adipose (r=0,77) and reticular tissue (r=0,86), the number of

[Invasion of cricoid cartilage by T2-T3 laryngeal cancer].

This paper reports a study of microscopic infiltration of the cartilage of the cricoid carried out in 335 patients with T2-T3 carcinomas of the larynx who had undergone total laryngectomy. The results of the investigation revealed microscopic infiltration of the cricoid cartilage in 12% (14/335) of the cases examined. The incidence, however, was much higher in those cases of extension to the hypoglottis (28% vs 5%, p < 0.0001) or in cases of an even greater extension of the tumor (13% vs 7%). In the 161 patients with neoplasias situated in the glottis, there was cricoid invasion in 30 cases re

Anthropological examination of the hyoid bone, thyroid cartilage, and cricoid cartilage in suicidal hangings.

Thorough evaluation of the hyoid bone, thyroid cartilage, and cricoid cartilage is critical in trauma interpretation as fractures of the neck block are commonly associated with manual strangulation, suicidal hanging, and direct blunt force trauma. The frequency of fractures to laryngohyoid structures is differentially reported in the literature. Between 2019 and 2021, the neck blocks from 56 suicidal hangings were subjected to an anthropological analysis for trauma. The protocol for examining these cases involved radiographs prior to removal of the soft tissues, followed by removal of all soft

Solitary Extramedullary Plasmacytoma of the Cricoid Cartilage-Case Report.

Solitary plasmacytoma (SP) is an extremely rare form of hematologic malignancy that can be classified as solitary bone plasmacytoma or solitary extramedullary plasmacytoma. Here, we report a patient who presented with progressive shortness of breath and foreign body sensation in his throat. Fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-FDG-PET/CT) demonstrated an abnormal FDG-avid soft tissue mass arising from the larynx involving the cricoid cartilage without additional suspicious lesions. Histology revealed an abundance of plasma cells; immunohistochemistry was pos

Age-related Change of the Dimensions of the Cricoid Cartilage in Adults.

OBJECTIVES: To measure the dimensions of the cricoid cartilage in adults and to investigate the age-related change of the dimensions of the cricoid cartilage. METHODS: After performing the multiplanar reconstruction and correcting the slant of the cervical computed tomography scans, the transverse and anteroposterior internal diameters of the inlet (TD-in and APD-in) and outlet (TD-out and APD-out) of the cricoid cartilage were measured, respectively. The angle between the arch and lamina of the cricoid cartilage in the middle sagittal plane was measured. The ratios of transverse to anteropos

Malformation and stenosis of the cricoid cartilage in association with Larsen's syndrome.

Three patients with the typical features of Larsen's syndrome are described. All three developed severe respiratory symptoms caused by a congenital subglottic stenosis. Tracheotomy and treatment of the stenosis by means of laryngotracheoplasty resulted in complete collapse of the cricoid cartilage and the proximal tracheal skeleton. Lack of rigidity of the laryngeal and tracheal cartilages in patients with Larsen's syndrome could well be responsible for this failure. Surgical treatment consisted of resection of the stenotic and collapsed areas and end-to-end anastomosis. This therapy was event

Extramedullary plasmacytoma of the cricoid cartilage with solitary plasmacytoma of the rib.

BACKGROUND: Extramedullary plasmacytoma is a rare plasma cell neoplasm of the soft tissues characterized by the presence of a single, discrete lesion without evidence of systemic disease. Extramedullary plasmacytoma may disseminate into multiple myeloma, a systemic plasma cell disease. METHODS: A rare case of extramedullary plasmacytoma of the cricoid cartilage with solitary plasmacytoma of the rib was reviewed. RESULTS: The patient was found to have two discrete lesions; one of the cricoid cartilage and one of the lateral left fifth rib. Despite the presence of multiple tumors, the patient

Apoptosis in the developing human cricoid cartilage: a pilot study.

Apoptosis is widely recognized as a major phenomenon in normal development. Deficiencies in this process may lead to developmental abnormalities such as congenital subglottic stenosis. We studied apoptosis using in situ end labeling of the 3'-OH ends of fragmented DNA in 5 progressively older, normal, human cricoid cartilage specimens. Results show that apoptosis is a very active process in fetal and neonatal tissue. The process gradually slows with advancing age. In the 4- and 13-year-old specimens, minimal to no apoptosis was seen. We conclude that apoptosis plays a critical role in the intr

[Post-radiation necrosis of the cricoid cartilage: an uncommon case].

Radiation therapy is considered as the treatment of choice for early stage laryngeal cancer. However, a few patients, after several years, develop severe life threatening complications, like edema or chondronecrosis. The clinical examination or endoscopy follow up may be difficult. CT and MR imaging can show the exact diagnosis depicting exquisitely the anatomy of the larynx. But at the beginning, the abnormalities are radiographically subtle and their diagnosis may be difficult because of artefacts due to patient dyspnea and mucous secretions. The main suggestive imaging features for suspecti
