Child maltreatment and adult criminal behavior: does criminal thinking explain the association?

Criminal thinking styles were examined as mediational links between different forms of child maltreatment (i.e., sexual abuse, physical abuse, and physical neglect) and adult criminal behaviors in 338 recently adjudicated men. Analyses revealed positive associations between child sexual abuse and sexual offenses as an adult, and between child physical abuse/neglect and endorsing proactive and reactive criminal thinking styles. Mediation analyses showed that associations between overall maltreatment history and adult criminal behaviors were accounted for by general criminal thinking styles and

Contributions of sociodemographic factors to criminal behavior.

We explored the extent to which prisoner sociodemographic variables (age, education, marital status, employment, and whether their parents were married or not) influenced offending in 64 randomly selected Brunei inmates, comprising both sexes. A quantitative field survey design ideal for the type of participants used in a prison context was employed to investigate the problem. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis with backward elimination identified prisoner marital status and age groups as significantly related to offending. Furthermore, hierarchical multinomial logistic regression analy

Youth and gambling disorder: What about criminal behavior?

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The commission of illegal acts has been associated with gambling disorder (GD). However, little is known about young adults with GD who commit GD-related crimes. Therefore, the main aim of this study was to compare sociodemographic, clinical, personality and psychopathological features among young adults with GD with and without a history of illegal behaviors. Our second aim was to analyze the specific associations between these factors through a path analysis. METHODS: A total of 808 treatment-seeking young adults who met criteria for GD were assessed at a public hospita

Neuroimaging Abnormalities in Neurological Patients with Criminal Behavior.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Criminal behavior occurs in previously law-abiding neurological patients, including patients with traumatic brain injury, focal brain lesions, and dementia. Neuroimaging abnormalities in these patients allow one to explore the potential neuroanatomical correlates of criminal behavior. However, this process has been challenging because (1) It is difficult to determine the temporal relationship between criminal behavior and neurological disease onset; (2) Abnormalities in several different brain regions have been associated with criminal behavior; and (3) It is difficult to qu

Criminal behavior in frontotemporal dementia and Alzheimer disease.

IMPORTANCE: Neurodegenerative diseases can cause dysfunction of neural structures involved in judgment, executive function, emotional processing, sexual behavior, violence, and self-awareness. Such dysfunctions can lead to antisocial and criminal behavior that appears for the first time in the adult or middle-aged individual or even later in life. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the frequency and type of criminal behavior among patients with a diagnosed dementing disorder. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: We conducted a retrospective medical record review of 2397 patients who were seen at the Un

Asperger's disorder and criminal behavior: forensic-psychiatric considerations.

Asperger's Disorder remains an under-diagnosed condition because of clinical unfamiliarity with its adult presentation. As forensic clinicians become familiar with the presentation of Asperger's disorder, it appears that affected individuals are over-represented in forensic criminal settings. Unique features of such persons may heighten their risks for engaging in criminal behavior. Both Theory of Mind deficits and a predilection for intense narrow interests, when coupled with deficient social awareness of salient interpersonal and social constraints on behavior, can result in criminal acts. Impact of behavioral genetic evidence on the adjudication of criminal behavior.

Recent advances in behavioral genetics suggest a modest relationship among certain gene variants, early childhood experiences, and criminal behavior. Although scientific research examining this link is still at an early stage, genetic data are already being introduced in criminal trials. However, the extent to which such evidence is likely to affect jurors' decisions has not been explored. In the present study, a representative sample of the U.S. population (n = 250) received a vignette describing an apparently impulsive homicide, accompanied by one of four explanations of the defendant's impu

Nutrition is Associated with Violent and Criminal Behaviors.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Psychological illnesses, mood disorders, anger and violent behaviors, which are increasing at an alarming rate today, not only negatively affect human health but also pose a threat to social life and security. The extant literature indicates that mental illnesses (e.g., depression and anxiety), negative affect (e.g., unhappiness and anger), and antisocial behaviors are associated with an increased likelihood of criminal behavior. Therefore, treating psychological disorders, improving mood and transforming negative behaviors into positive behaviors seems to be a potential str

Criminal Behavior in Frontotemporal Dementia: A Multimodal MRI Study.

The behavioral variant of frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) is related to a variety of social misbehaviors, including criminal behavior (CB) due to deep changes in cognition, behavior, and personality. Recent work suggests that impairment in emotional processing, along with disinhibition, constitutes the necessary elements for CB in bvFTD. However, the underlying neurobiological mechanisms are still unclear. Therefore, we aim at investigating structural and functional brain changes related to CB in bvFTD using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with the German Consortium for Frontotemporal Lobar D

Gambling and Impulsivity Traits: A Recipe for Criminal Behavior?

Gambling disorder (GD) is a psychiatric condition that was recently recategorized as a non-substance-related addiction in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Health Disorders. Criminal activity is commonly associated with gambling; however, few empirical studies to date have examined sociodemographic and psychological variables in this population. In this study, we explored criminal behavior history in a sample of consecutively recruited treatment-seeking gamblers (n = 382) and compared subjects with a history of illegal acts (n = 103, 26.9%) to those with no criminal record (n = 2

Chronicity of criminal behavior and psychopathology in male exhibitionists.

Conducted this study to resolve inconsistencies in the literature with regard to the personality characteristics of male exhibitionists. Both exhibitionistic and non-exhibitionistic criminal offenses as they relate to severity of psychopathology as measured by the MMPI in 84 exhibitionists were studied. An increase in psychopathology was not found to be associated with an increase in chronicity of exhibitionistic activity in exhibitionists. When exhibitionists who had been involved in other forms of illegal activity were considered alone, positive correlations were found between elevations on
