Cronobacter spp. are emerging opportunistic bacteria that are able to survive to diverse stresses. They infect mainly children through contaminated food. Despite the growing concern surrounding them, Cronobacter malonaticus (C. malonaticus) and Cronobacter turicensis (C. turicensis) remain understudied. This study aimed to characterize the genomic traits of C. malonaticus and C. turicensis isolated worldwide. A total of 104 C. malonaticus and 89 C. turicensis genomes from eight countries and diverse sources were screened for antimicrobial resistance and virulence genes, plasmids, and prophages

BACKGROUND: Cronobacter spp. are Gram-negative, facultative-anaerobic, non-spore forming, enteric coliform bacteria, which belongs to the Enterobacteriaceae family. Cronobacter spp. are opportunistic pathogens that have brought rare but life-threatening infections such as meningitis, necrotizing enterocolitis and bloodstream infections in neonates and infants. Information on the diversity, pathogenicity and virulence of Cronobacter species obtained from various sources is still relatively scarce and fragmentary. The aim of this study was to examine and analyse different pathogenicity and virul

A coordinated survey for Cronobacter and related organisms in powdered infant formula, follow up formula and infant foods was undertaken by 8 laboratories in 7 countries in recognition of and in response to the data needs identified in an FAO/WHO call for data in order to develop global risk management guidance for these products. The products (domestic and imported) were purchased from the local market and were categorised according to their principle ingredients. A total of 290 products were analysed using a standardised procedure of pre-enrichment in 225 ml Buffered Peptone Water (BPW), fol

Cronobacter sakazakii is a new emerging foodborne bacterial pathogen associated with fatal infections such as meningitis, necrotizing enterocolitis, and septicemia in neonates. Powdered infant formula milk has been recognized as one of the main transmission vehicles and contaminated sources of this pathogen. Educating parents about the importance of hygienic reconstitution of powdered infant formula, storage practices, and hand hygiene is crucial to reducing the risk of this life-threatening infection. The clinician should be aware of the special considerations for antimicrobial treatment sele

Being able to track bacterial pathogens is essential for epidemiological purposes as well as monitoring in-house production facilities. Common bacterial pathogens, such as Salmonella serovars, are already been well defined, and their detection methods are very advanced. However, this will not be the case for emergent bacterial pathogens, as was the case for Cronobacter. The clinical significance of the organism is due to its association with rare sporadic infections in adults, and severe life-threatening outbreaks of necrotizing enterocolitis and meningitis in newborn babies. The main recogniz

Cronobacter sakazakii is a foodborne pathogenic microorganism associated with sporadic cases of neonatal meningitis, necrotising enterocolitis, septicaemia, bloody diarrhoea and brain abscesses acquired through the consumption of contaminated powdered infant formula (PIF). This study aimed to investigate the growth of C. sakazakii DPC6529, a particularly stress tolerant clinical isolate, in acidified laboratory media and PIF. The possibility of a stationary-phase acid tolerance response (ATR) was also investigated. C. sakazakii DPC6529 grew in LB broth acidified to pH4.2 with hydrochloric acid

Cronobacter sakazakii is a Gram-negative pathogen found in milk-based formulae that causes infant meningitis. Bacteriophages have been proposed to control bacterial pathogens; however, comprehensive knowledge about a phage is required to ensure its safety before clinical application. We have characterized C. sakazakii phage vB_CsaM_GAP32 (GAP32), which possesses the second largest sequenced phage genome (358,663bp). A total of 571 genes including 545 protein coding sequences and 26 tRNAs were identified, thus more genes than in the smallest bacterium, Mycoplasma genitalium G37. BLASTP and HHpr

MLST is a molecular typing technique that involves the identification and clustering of bacterial isolates based on the partial sequence analysis of multiple housekeeping genes (generally seven) which are distributed across the length of the genome of the organism. The Cronobacter whole genus MLST scheme can be successfully used for an accurate species level identification and classification of this complex genus.

Cronobacter spp. is a genus of Gram-negative bacteria belonging to the family Enterobacteriaceae. Species of the genus Cronobacter, particularly C. sakazakii, are implicated in the development of severe disease in newborns, which occurs with necrotizing enterocolitis, sepsis and meningitis. The disease has been frequently associated with powdered infant formula (PIF) and can therefore occur in the form of outbreaks. The genus Cronobacter has undergone extensive diversification in the course of its evolution, with some species being clearly pathogenic to humans while the impact of other species

Cronobacter sakazakii is an emerging and opportunistic foodborne pathogen that causes severe infantile diseases, including meningitis, necrotizing enterocolitis, and septicemia. It has been reported in numerous countries around the world, including those in Africa. Although it has been isolated from food, environmental and clinical samples across Africa, the most implicated source of the C. sakazakii infection outbreaks across the globe has been the consumption of contaminated powdered infant formula. Cronobacter has many unique characteristics that contribute to its survival in harsh environm

BACKGROUND: Cronobacter species are Gram-negative opportunistic foodborne pathogens that may cause enterocolitis, bacteremia and meningitis in neonates and premature neonates. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) serves as the major component of the outer membrane of cell, is a potential virulence factor for Cronobacter.
METHODS: Given the potential importance of this molecule in infection and virulence, SDS-PAGE of LPS, MS and TLC characterization of phospholipids and phenotypic characterization of Cronobacter spp. strains were carried out.
RESULT: The phospholipids from Cronobacter yielded four major

Cronobacter sakazakii is a foodborne pathogen associated with fatal forms of necrotizing enterocolitis, meningitis and sepsis in neonates and infants. The aim of this study was to determine whether citral, a major component of lemongrass oil, could suppress putative virulence factors of C. sakazakii that contribute to infection. Sub-inhibitory concentrations of citral significantly decreased motility, quorum sensing, biofilm formation and endotoxin production. Citral substantially reduced the adhesion and invasion of C. sakazakii to Caco-2 cells and decreased bacterial survival and replication

Cronobacter sakazakii, an opportunistic foodborne pathogen associated with powdered infant formula, causes severe neonatal infections, yet its interaction with gastric epithelial cells remains poorly characterized. Here, we conducted a preliminary in vitro study to evaluate early host-pathogen responses of C. sakazakii in AGS gastric epithelial cells. AGS cells were exposed to C. sakazakii ATCC 29544 at a multiplicity of infection of 100 for 2 h, and cytotoxicity and transcriptional responses were assessed by viability assay, gentamicin protection assay, and reverse transcription-quantitative

Cronobacter sakazakii is a significant foodborne pathogen commonly associated with dairy products, causing severe infections with high mortality rates, particularly in neonates and immunocompromised adults. In this study, we demonstrated that apigenin exhibits potent antibacterial activity against C. sakazakii, with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 160 mg/L. Propidium iodide staining indicated that apigenin at sub-MIC and MIC concentrations had negligible effects on bacterial membrane integrity; only a 4.9% increase in membrane permeability was observed at 2 MIC, suggesting that mem

Cronobacter sakazakii neonatal infections are often epidemiologically linked to the consumption of contaminated powdered infant formula. We describe a case resulting from consumption of contaminated expressed breast milk, as confirmed by whole-genome sequencing. This case highlights potential risks associated with storage and acquisition of expressed breast milk.

AIM: Cronobacter sakazakii sequence types 1, 4, 8 and 12 are associated with outbreaks of neonatal meningitis and necrotizing enterocolitis infections. However clonality results in strains which are indistinguishable using conventional methods. This study investigated the use of clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)-cas loci profiling for epidemiological investigations.
MATERIALS & METHODS: Seventy whole genomes of C. sakazakii strains from four clonal complexes which were widely distributed temporally, geographically and origin of source were profiled.
