Calcium (Ca2+) is an essential mineral for plants, functioning both as a nano- to micromolar signaling ion in gene regulation and, at millimolar levels, in nutrition-supporting structural integrity and enzyme activation. These functions depend on adequate fertilization. However, Ca2+ problems stem mainly from hydraulic access and local availability within specific tissues and compartments rather than bulk supply; thus, deficiency can occur even in Ca2+-rich soils due to soil immobilization and physiological constraints. Because Ca2+ is poorly phloem-mobile and moves mainly via transpiration-dr

Trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) is an ultrashort-chain PFAS increasingly detected in precipitation, surface water, and agricultural environments, yet its accumulation in crops remains poorly quantified. This study presents a process-based modeling framework to simulate crop TFA uptake, integrating a TFA mass-balance module with three crop models (AquaCrop, SWAP-WOFOST and LINGRA-N-Plus). A full-factorial scenario analysis was conducted for five crops, three soil types, 30 years of weather data across three European agro-climatic zones, and ranges of crop parameters, environmental TFA concentrations

Plant beneficial microbes (PBMs), such as plant growth-promoting bacteria, rhizobia, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, and Trichoderma, can reduce the use of agrochemicals and increase plant yield, nutrition, and tolerance to biotic-abiotic stresses. Yet, large-scale applications of PBM have been hampered by the high amounts of inoculum per plant or per cultivation area needed for successful colonization and consequently the economic feasibility. Seed coating, a process that consists in covering seeds with low amounts of exogenous materials, is gaining attention as an efficient delivery system for

The biogeochemistry and bioavailability of cadmium, released during sphalerite weathering in soils, were investigated under contrasting agricultural scenarios to assess health risks associated with sphalerite dust transport to productive soils from mining. Laboratory experiments (365 d) on temperate and sub-tropical soils amended with sphalerite (<63 μm, 0.92 wt.% Cd) showed continuous, slow dissolution (0.6-1.2% y(-1)). Wheat grown in spiked temperate soil accumulated ≈38% (29 μmol kg(-1)) of the liberated Cd, exceeding food safety limits. In contrast, rice grown in flooded sub-tropical soil

The initial rate of pathogen invasion in crops is influenced by the spatial clustering of susceptible crops and the characteristics of pathogen dispersal. Previous studies have shown that various degrees of crop clustering can effectively reduce this invasion rate. However, the optimal degrees of clustering that minimize pathogen invasion have not previously been identified. This study aims to determine analytically the range of crop clustering that minimizes the initial rate of pathogen invasion. We studied artificial agricultural landscapes with crop areas arranged in identical square cluste

Black carbon is an underappreciated compound agricultural stressor that simultaneously disrupts plant physiology, agroecosystem functioning, andcrop productivity, highlighting the need for realistic exposure assessment and integrated strategies for climate-resilient agriculture. Black carbon (BC), a carbonaceous particulate generated through the incomplete combustion of fossil fuels, biomass, and biofuels, is recognized as a major short-lived climate pollutant with significant implications for atmospheric processes and agricultural sustainability. Unlike engineered biochar, atmospheric BC acts

The indiscriminate use of plastic products and their inappropriate management and disposal contribute to the increasing presence and accumulation of this material in all environmental zones. The chemical properties of plastics and their resistance to natural degradation lead over time to the production of microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics, which are dispersed in soil, water, and air and can be absorbed by plants, including those grown for food. In agriculture, MPs can come from many sources (mulch film, tractor tires, compost, fertilizers, and pesticides). The possible effects of this type

Since its origins, thousands of years ago, agriculture has been challenged by the presence of evolving plant pathogens. Temporal rotations of host and non-host crops have helped farmers to control epidemics among other utilities, but further efforts for strategy assessment are needed. Here, we present a methodology for developing crop rotation strategies optimal for control of pathogens informed by numerical simulations of eco-evolutionary dynamics in one field. This approach can integrate agronomic criteria used in crop rotations-soil quality and cash yield-and the analysis of pathogen evolut

The phytotoxic risk of ambient air pollution to local vegetation was assessed in Selangor State, Malaysia. The AOT40 value was calculated by means of the continuously monitored daily maximum concentration and the local diurnal pattern of O3. Together with minor risks associated with the levels of NO2 and SO2, the study found that the monthly AOT40 values in these peri-urban sites were consistently over 1.0 ppm.h, which is well in exceedance of the given European critical level. Linking the O3 level to actual agricultural crop production in Selangor State also indicated that the extent of yield

The increasing use of alternative therapies that rely on organically grown foods has renewed interest in the relationship between agricultural methods and food quality. The purpose of this article is to review the literature produced over the last 50 years comparing the nutritional quality of organic with conventional crops. Whereas few studies have been conducted, there is a trend in the data indicating higher nutrient content in organically grown crops. This phenomenon is possibly due to a higher water content in conventional crops, which causes nutrient dilution. For individual nutrients, e

BACKGROUND: Over Earth's history, the Sun has continuously released coronal mass ejections of plasma that have flowed toward Earth, generating the need for reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) for plants. On the other hand, engineered plasma interacts with air, generating RONS. Thus, the natural process is simulated using engineered plasma (hereafter, plasma), which acts as an artificial Sun. Plasma agriculture offers a sustainable alternative by leveraging plasma-generated RONS to stimulate plant growth and generate nitrogen fertilizer through eco-friendly methods.

An in situ technology for mitigating diffuse agricultural pollution using catch crops was developed for simultaneously preventing nitrate groundwater pollution, reducing nitrous oxide (N2O) gas emissions, and removing salts from the topsoil. Seasonal changes in the performance of a catch crop were investigated using lysimeters in a full-scale greenhouse experiment with 50 d cultivation of dent corn. Catch crop cultivation significantly reduced the leached mineral nitrogen by 89-91% in summer, 87-89% in spring, and 61-82% in winter, and it also significantly reduced the N2O emission by 68-84% i

The use of cover crops (CCs) is increasingly promoted to diversify cropping systems and advance agricultural sustainability. Yet, CC adoption can involve context-dependent trade-offs, including resource competition and elevated greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In this opinion article, we propose enhanced rock weathering (ERW) as a complementary strategy to improve biogeochemical synchrony within CC systems. By synthesizing emerging evidence, we show how CC-ERW interactions can synergistically enhance carbon sequestration, nutrient cycling, GHG mitigation, and soil food-web functioning, mainly v

Today, the agrochemical industry faces enormous challenges to ensure the sustainable supply of high-quality food, efficient water use, low environmental impact, and the growing world population. The shortage of agrochemicals due to consumer perception, changing needs of farmers and ever-changing regulatory requirements is higher than the number of active ingredients that are placed on the market. The introduction of halogen atoms into an active ingredient molecule offers the opportunity to optimize its physico-chemical properties such as molecular lipophilicity. As early as 2010, around four-f

It is notable that the adoption of GM glyphosate-tolerant crops increases glyphosate use but reduces non-glyphosate herbicide use; and adoption of GM insect-resistant crops significantly reduces insecticide use. While the health hazard of pesticide use has been well documented, little literature evaluates the health effects of different pesticides related to GM crops in an integrated framework. This study aims to associate the uses of different pesticides related to GM crops with the blood chemistry panel and peripheral nerve conduction of Chinese farmers. Pesticides used by farmers were recor

The aim of this work was to study the newly developed biofertilizer and plant growth-promoting activity of a consortium of bacterial strains Azotobacter chroococcum MDC 6111, Paenibacillus polymyxa MDC 280 and symbiotic nitrogen-fixing bacteria Rhizobium leguminosarum MDC 5609, Mesorhizobium ciceri MDC 6048 and Bradyrhizobium japonicum MDC 5789. It should be noted that in the biofertilizer formula, the strains A. chroococcum and P. polymyxa are unaltered components, and the nodule bacteria are included depending on the type of crop, taking into account the specificity of these bacteria to plan

Amaranthus spp. are plant species native to America. They are widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. Some species in this genus are considered dual-crops. Their seeds and leaves can be used for both human and animal consumption. Grain and leafy amaranth are gluten-free and rich in protein, unsaturated fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, and low glycemic index carbohydrates. Traditionally, it was grown as a pseudocereal grain, especially in Central and North America. However, cultivated amaranth species still show semidomesticated traits. These traits need to be improved
