Cross-Cultural Comparison of the Contexts Associated with Emotional Outbursts.

The causal relationship between emotional outbursts and emotion dysregulation is proposed to be heterogeneous, but cultural influences have not been considered despite established cultural differences in emotional processes (e.g., increased motivation to suppress emotions in interdependent cultures). Responses to the Brazilian Portuguese version of the Emotional Outburst Questionnaire were collected from 327 caregivers of young people (6-25 years) with autism spectrum disorder, Down's syndrome, or intellectual disability. Responses were compared to a previous sample of 268 responses from the E

The Autism-Spectrum Quotient (AQ) in Japan: A cross-cultural comparison.

The AQ (Autism-Spectrum Quotient) is a self-administered instrument for measuring the degree to which an adult with normal intelligence has the traits associated with the autistic spectrum. The AQ was administered in Japan to test whether the UK results would generalize to a very different culture. Three groups of subjects, adults with AS or HFA (n = 57), adult controls (n = 194), and University students (n = 1050) were assessed. The adults with AS/HFA had a mean AQ score which was significantly higher than both the controls and the University students. Among the controls, males scored signifi

Cross-cultural comparison of mild cognitive impairment between China and USA.

Individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) are at increased risk for dementia of Alzheimer's type (DAT), vascular dementia (VaD), Lewy Body (LBD) and Fronto-temporal dementias (FTD). Risk factors and conversion rates of MCI to dementia have not been thoroughly investigated in developing countries. Chinese and English versions of Mini-Mental State Examination were administered serially among well-matched subjects from two clinics located in Xi'an, China and Houston, USA. Subtle cognitive impairments were weighed according to MCI criteria as defined previously. Subjects with MCI were follo

Temporal Coordination in Mother-Infant Vocal Interaction: A Cross-Cultural Comparison.

Temporal coordination of vocal exchanges between mothers and their infants emerges from a developmental process that relies on the ability of communication partners to co-coordinate and predict each other's turns. Consequently, the partners engage in communicative niche construction that forms a foundation for language in human infancy. While robust universals in vocal turn-taking have been found, differences in the timing of maternal and infant vocalizations have also been reported across cultures. In this study, we examine the temporal structure of vocal interactions in 38 mother-infant dyad

Assessment and treatment of socially phobic children: a cross cultural comparison.

In this study we examined the psychopathology and behavioral treatment of White and African American preadolescent children with social phobia. The comprehensive assessment strategy, including semistructured diagnostic interviews, clinician ratings of impairment, behavioral observations, parental ratings, and self-report inventories, did not reveal differences in symptomatic presentation between African American and White children. Whereas all children improved from pre- to posttreatment, there were no significant differences based on race. The results are discussed in terms of the applicabili

Testing evolutionary hypotheses about human biological adaptation using cross-cultural comparison.

Physiological data from a range of human populations living in different environments can provide valuable information for testing evolutionary hypotheses about human adaptation. By taking into account the effects of population history, phylogenetic comparative methods can help us determine whether variation results from selection due to particular environmental variables. These selective forces could even be due to cultural traits-which means that gene-culture co-evolution may be occurring. In this paper, we outline two examples of the use of these approaches to test adaptive hypotheses that

[Incidence and characteristics in identification of abused children: cross-cultural comparison].

This study compared the incidence and characteristics of reported child abuse cases in two different ethnic groups. Incidence was calculated based on the total number of cases (N = 2,854) reported to child protection authorities between July 17, 1988 and March 31, 1989. In a sample of 953 reports, the following were examined: the source of the reporting, type of abuse, substantiation and age of the child. The incidence was found to be slightly higher among Haitian group compared to French-Canadian group. In the former case, reporting tended to originate with public authorities such as the poli

Cross-cultural approaches to transsexualism. A comparison between Sweden and Australia.

Several hypotheses with regard to the influence of societal factors including the rigidity of the society with regard to sex roles, sexual equality and homosexual behaviour were tested comparing prevalence, incidence and sex ratio of transsexualism between Sweden and Australia, two societies which differ with respect to these factors while otherwise remaining comparable as Western democratic societies of about the same size and level of technological development. Significant differences were found between the two countries in both frequency and sex ratio of transsexualism. These findings are d

Cross-cultural comparison of ADHD symptoms among Japanese and US university students.

Problems related to attention, hyperactivity, and impulsiveness are known to impact social, academic, and vocational success. When the problems begin in childhood and lead to impaired functioning, the syndrome is identified as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Symptoms of the syndrome persist into adolescence and adulthood for many individuals, but less is known about characteristics of adults compared to children, especially adults attending university. Furthermore, there is little cross-national and cross-cultural research. This study compared DSM-IV-TR ADHD symptoms of US uni

Cross-cultural differences in autistic characteristics: a comparison between Spain and Colombia.

Over the last few years, there has been an increase in the extent of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), with developed countries having a higher incidence than developing ones. On the other hand, Latin America lacks studies on autism because the instruments for its detection and diagnosis have not been psychometrically validated. This study aimed to analyze the differences in ASD traits among individuals in Spain and Colombia, with results indicating no significant differences in sample characteristics regarding age, sex, and type of ASD. However, differences in diagnostic comorbidity with intell

Cross-cultural comparison of interpersonal problem-solving in students with mental retardation.

This study was conducted to investigate the problem-solving performance, style, and cross-cultural differences of students with mild mental retardation representing three cultural backgrounds (African American, European American, and Nigerian). Students listened to vignettes (Edeh Scale of Interpersonal Problem Situations) depicting interpersonal problem situations in which a target person was described as facing a problem situation with a specified goal that needed independent resolution. Significant cultural differences were found in problem-solving performance and in style among the three c

Eating Disorder Inventory in Sweden: description, cross-cultural comparison, and clinical utility.

The Eating Disorder Inventory is one of very few tests for anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa that measures not only symptoms but also psychological characteristics believed to be central in these disorders. This study of 425 patients and control subjects showed that patients had markedly higher scores than controls and recovered patients on all eight scales. Individuals with bulimia nervosa scored higher on a few of the scales than those with anorexia nervosa, as did binge eaters at all weights compared with those who only restricted eating. Comparison with Canadian subjects showed several

Cross-cultural comparison of the neural correlates of true and false memory retrieval.

Prior work has shown Americans have higher levels of memory specificity than East Asians. Neuroimaging studies have not investigated mechanisms that account for cultural differences at retrieval. In this study, we use fMRI to assess whether mnemonic discrimination, distinguishing novel from previously encountered stimuli, accounts for cultural differences in memory. Fifty-five American and 55 Taiwanese young adults completed an object recognition paradigm testing discrimination of old targets, similar lures and novel foils. Mnemonic discrimination was tested by comparing discrimination of simi

The autism-spectrum quotient (AQ) children's version in Japan: a cross-cultural comparison.

In the current study, the child AQ was administered in Japan, to examine whether the UK results for reliability and validity generalize to a different culture. Assessment groups were: Group 1: n = 81 children with Asperger Syndrome (AS) or high-functioning autism (HFA); Group 2: n = 22 children diagnosed PDD-NOS with average IQ; and Group 3: n = 372 randomly selected controls from primary and secondary schools. Both clinical groups scored significantly higher than controls (AS/HFA mean AQ = 31.9, SD = 6.93; PDD-NOS mean AQ = 28.0, SD = 6.88; controls mean AQ = 11.7, SD = 5.94). Among the contr

A cross-cultural comparison of population gambling patterns and regulatory frameworks: France and Québec.

Few empirical studies have examined the relationships between differing regulatory approaches and patterns of gambling behaviors. This article reports on a correlational cross-cultural comparison of differences in the regulatory approaches and gambling behavior among general adult populations in France and Québec, Canada. We drew data from two large population surveys conducted in France and Québec (N=27 653 and N=11 888, respectively). We found diverging and converging aspects of government regulatory policies. Statistical analyses demonstrated significantly higher participation rates and pre

Sexual behaviour and HIV infection risks in Indian homosexual men: a cross-cultural comparison.

A comparison of sexual activities in 49 homosexually active northwest Indian men attending STD clinics was made with 173 homosexually active Australian men from a community sample. There were major differences between the two on frequency of marriage and of bisexual behaviour (significantly higher in the Indian sample), condom use for anal intercourse, and of oral sex (significantly higher in the Australian sample). There was also a substantial level of heterosexual anal intercourse reported in the Indian sample. While preliminary and based on nonmatched and nonrandom samples, these data sugge

The Role of Space and Body in Referent Distinction Strategies: A Cross-Cultural Comparison.

The emergence of linguistic structure is shaped by interaction and cultural transmission as well as cognitive biases and social conventions. An important aspect of linguistic structure is reference distinction or "who did what to whom." This paper explores how cross-cultural differences in the conceptualization of space may influence the development of strategies for referent distinction in this domain. We conducted a silent gesture experiment employing dyadic interaction and iterated learning with participants from two cultural groups that differ in their predominant conceptualization of spac
