Toxic effects of Crotalaria saltiana in mice.

Dry Crotalaria saltiana shoots were fed to strain ASL mice at 50, 10 and 1% of the diet. Feeding of Crotalaria shoots at 50 and 10% produced toxicity and death after 7 to 29 days. The signs of Crotalaria poisoning were inappetence, dullness, dyspnea and recumbency. The main lesions were necrosis, portal fibroplasia and hemorrhage in the liver, pulmonary congestion and emphysema, focal catarrhal enteritis, and degeneration of the cells of the renal tubules.

Electron microscopy of Crotalaria pulmonary hypertension.

The lungs of 11 rats fed on Crotalaria spectabilis seeds for periods ranging from 12 to 61 days were examined by both light and electron microscopy. The findings were compared with those obtained from nine control rats given a normal diet. Eight of the 11 test rats showed morphological evidence of pulmonary arterial hypertension in the form of right ventricular hypertrophy; the exceptions were rats killed after receiving the Crotalaria diet for 12, 22, and 29 days respectively. On light microscopy, all the test rats showed exudative lesions in the lungs consisting of eosinophilic alveolar coag

Pulmonary and hepatic lesions caused by the dehydropyrrolizidine alkaloid-producing plants Crotalaria juncea and Crotalaria retusa in donkeys.

The effects and susceptibility of donkeys to Crotalaria juncea and Crotalaria retusa poisoning were determined at high and low doses. Seeds of C. juncea containing 0.074% of dehydropyrrolizidine alkaloids (DHPAs) (isohemijunceines 0.05%, trichodesmine 0.016%, and junceine 0.008%) were administered to three donkeys at 0.3, 0.6 and 1 g/kg body weight (g/kg) daily for 365 days. No clinical signs were observed and, on liver and lung biopsies, the only lesion was a mild liver megalocytosis in the donkeys ingesting 0.6 and 1 g/kg/day. Two other donkeys that received daily doses of 3 and 5 g seed/kg

Antileishmanial effects of Crotalaria spectabilis Roth aqueous extracts on Leishmania amazonensis.

Fifteen polar extracts from leaf, seed, pod, stem, flower and root of Crotalaria spectabilis were prepared using aqueous systems, based on the principles of green chemistry, and showed different protease inhibitor (PI) activities on trypsin, papain, pepsin and the extracellular L. amazonensis serine protease (LSPIII). The most pronounced inhibitory effect on LSPIII was observed in leaf (CS-P), root, stem, flower (CS-FPVPP) and pod (CS-VA) extracts. Crotalaria extracts exhibited low cytotoxicity on macrophages; however, they decreased the viability of L. amazonensis promastigotes and amastigote

Pulmonary fibrosis in horses associated with spontaneous Crotalaria juncea intoxication.

We report an outbreak of Crotalaria juncea intoxication in horses exhibiting progressive weight loss and respiratory distress in northeastern Brazil. Necropsy revealed firm, non-collapsed lungs with extensive interstitial fibrosis, bronchiolar epithelial hyperplasia with club cells proliferation, and marked pulmonary arterial remodeling. Hepatic lesions consisted primarily of centrilobular necrosis, probably resulting from hypoxic injury related to anemia and prolonged agonic death. Pasture inspection identified significant invasion by shrubs of C. juncea in various phenological stages.

Arterial changes in Crotalaria spectabilis-induced pulmonary hypertension in rats.

Pulmonary hypertension has been induced in rats by feeding them the seeds of Crotalaria spectabilis for 34 days, when some were killed and others left to recover for 14, 31 or 54 days. By 34 days and after pulmonary arterial injection, right ventricular hypertrophy was demonstrated with an increase in pulmonary arterial medial muscle, a reduced number of small arteries and “ghost” arteries. With recovery, right ventricular hypertrophy had regressed by 31 days and by 54 days the arterial muscle was decreased. There was no increase in number of small arteries although “ghost” arteries had disapp

Monocrotaline presence in the Crotalaria (Fabaceae) plant genus and its influence on arthropods in agroecosystems.

Crotalaria (Fabaceae) occurs abundantly in tropical and subtropical regions and has about 600 known species. These plants are widely used in agriculture, mainly as cover plants and green manures, in addition to their use in the management of phytonematodes. A striking feature of these species is the production of pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs), secondary allelochemicals involved in plant defense against herbivores. In Crotalaria species, monocrotaline is the predominant PA, which has many biological activities reported, including cytotoxicity, tumorigenicity, hepatotoxicity and neurotoxicity, w
