Molecular biology of neurohormone precursors in the eyestalk of Crustacea.

Our knowledge concerning the primary structures of crustacean neuropeptides has been broadened considerably during the last few years and has greatly contributed to the successful application of molecular biological techniques to crustacean neuroendocrine research. In this review, we compare and discuss the preprohormones of the Red Pigment Concentrating Hormone (RPCH), the Pigment-Dispersing Hormone (PDH) and the different members of the Crustacean Hyperglycemic Hormone, Molt-Inhibiting and Gonad-Inhibiting Hormone family (CHH/MIH/GIH peptide family), recently elucidated by cloning and sequen

The ultrastructure of the hepatopancreatic caeca of Gammarus minus (crustacea, amphipoda).

The hepatopancreatic caeca of the freshwater amphipod Gummarus minus are four tapered blind pouches lined with a simple columnar epithelium bearing an apical surface of regular microvilli and resting on a basement membrane. This epithelium is enclosed by a tonic, striated muscularis. Each caecum consists of three regions. The distal zone is formed of embryonic cells having a high nuclear to cytoplasmic ratio and giving rise to the other cell types. The second or differentiation zone consists of regular tall columnar cells of two morphological types:(1) light staining R-cells which have a large

A new generation of biocides for control of crustacea in fish farms.

Farming of salmon has become a significant industry in many countries over the past two decades. A major challenge facing this sector is infestation of the salmon by sea lice. The main way of treating salmon for such infestations is the use of medicines such as organophosphates, pyrethrins, hydrogen peroxide or benzoylphenyl ureas. The use of these medicines in fish farms is, however, highly regulated due to concerns about contamination of the wider marine environment. In this paper we report the use of photochemically active biocides for the treatment of a marine copepod, which is a model of

Control of rhythmic behaviour by a hierarchy of linked oscillators in crustacea.

In Homarus, the central pattern generators for the rhythmic motor activities of the gastric teeth and the pyloric chamber are located in the stomatogastric ganglion. It is shown that independent gastric and pyloric oscillators are also contained in higher nervous centres (the commissural ganglia) and provide a phasic rhythmic input to the stomatogastric pattern generators. This demonstrates that rhythmic behaviour can be organized by a hierarchy of linked oscillators each capable of producing the rhythm.

Host specificity of Argulus coregoni (Crustacea: Branchiura) increases at maturation.

We tested the hypothesis that host specificity in ectoparasites does not depend exclusively on the features of the host but also on surrounding habitats, using 2 fish ectoparasites, Argulus coregoni and A. foliaceus (Crustacea: Branchiura), occurring sympatrically in Finnish lakes. Although these parasites are considered to be of low specificity, we found that the larger of the 2 species, A. coregoni developed a pronounced preference for salmonid hosts at the beginning of maturation (defined by the presence of copulating specimens). Argulus foliaceus infects a much wider range of fish hosts. W

Taxonomic guide to the mantis shrimps (Crustacea: Stomatopoda) of South Africa.

Mantis shrimps are important predatory crustaceans in the marine benthos and comprise some 500 described species worldwide, the majority inhabiting the tropics, with a few found in temperate regions. However, current taxonomic knowledge of the mantis shrimp fauna of South Africa is limited and outdated, with the last comprehensive taxonomic revision of the group being that of K.H. Barnard in 1950. The stomatopod crustaceans of South Africa are reported based on previous records in the literature and existing material housed in the Iziko South African Museum, Cape Town. Five species are added a

Anatomy of the extrinsic gut musculature of Gammarus minus (Crustacea: Amphipoda).

Inserting on the buccal and esophageal foregut of Gammarus minus are numerous pairs of serially arranged dorsal dilator muscles, a single pair of lateral muscles, and two pairs of posterior muscles. Muscles of the cardiac stomach include three dorsal sets, a single pair associated with the pterocardiac ossicles, and two pairs inserting on the ventral aspect. A single pair of muscles inserts on the lateral aspect of the pyloric stomach. The extrinsic muscles of the foregut originate from exoskeletal apodemes of the cephalothoracic cuticle, sockets of the mandible, and a maxillary bridge that li

The fine structure of the compound eye of Squilla mantis (Crustacea, Stomatopoda).

The fine structure of the compound eye of adult specimens of Squilla mantis was investigated. The eye consists of about 3600-3700 ommatidia, each containing a dioptric apparatus formed by a lamellated corneal lens and a eucone-type crystalline cone. Each of the four cone cells give rise to a cylindrical process (crystalline thread) inserted between the retinula cells and extending down to the basement membrane. Two distal pigment cells completely encompass the distal part of the crystalline cone, becoming progressively smaller and forming roundish processes. At the level of the tip of the crys

Functional morphology of cirri in the barnacle Amphibalanus improvisus (crustacea: Balanidae).

Barnacles rely heavily on their mobile cirri for food capture because of the sessile lifestyle. These filamentous food capturing devices are extended into the water current and perform undulating movements. Cuticular structures with corresponding musculature work together, to allow these highly repetitive movements. This paper studies the interplay between structure and function of the cirri using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), microcomputed tomography (µCT) and high-speed video recordings (HSV) in Amphibalanus improvisus. Barnacles use the external cuticle structures (denticles and setae

The early development of the onychopod cladoceran Bythotrephes longimanus (Crustacea, Branchiopoda).

INTRODUCTION: Within arthropods, several crustacean groups are unique in their early development due to their stereotyped cell division patterns and cell lineages. However, it is still unclear whether these cell division patterns are homologous between the various crustacean groups and whether they could indicate the ground pattern of Tetraconata (Crustacea and Hexapoda). In this study we describe the early development of the raptorial water flea Bythotrephes longimanus as a representative of the Cladocera within branchiopods. RESULTS: In B. longimanus the early cell lineage and the cell divi

Ontogeny of Osmoregulatory Structures in the Shrimp Penaeus japonicus (Crustacea, Decapoda).

The ontogeny of differentiated osmoregulatory epithelia in the branchial chamber (gills, branchiostegite, pleura, epipodite) was studied by transmission electron microscopy throughout the postembryonic development of Penaeus japonicus. These epithelia are characterized by typical cytological features, including apical microvilli and numerous basal infoldings associated with mitochondria. Differentiated osmoregulatory structures are not observed in the early larval stages: nauplii and zoea 1. In the next larval stages, zoeas and mysis, gills and epipodites are developed as buds only, but osmore

Morphology and histology of P. argentinus (Crustacea, Decapoda, Caridea) digestive tract.

This work describes the morphology and histology of the P. argentinus digestive tract. The foregut comprises the mouth, oesophagus, and stomach and is lined by a simple cylindrical epithelium overlain by cuticle. There are tegumental glands in the oral region and in the first portion of the oesophagus and of the hindgut. The cardiac stomach is an oval dorsal sac in the cephalothorax and has no calcified structures. The pyloric stomach comprises an upper chamber and a lower gland filter. The filter consists of an outer row of elongated setae and an inner row of dorsally curved setae forming lon

Postembryonic eye growth in the seashore isopod Ligia exotica (Crustacea, Isopoda).

The eye of Ligia exotica is of the apposition type and has open rhabdoms. The facets are hexagonal, and the dioptric apparatus consists of a flat cornea and a spherical crystalline cone placed in the center of two large cone cells. Each ommatidium has seven regular retinula cells and one eccentric cell; a basement membrane forms the proximal boundary of the retina. With increases in body size from 0.6 to almost 4.0 cm, facet numbers and ommatidial diameters increased from 800 to 1500 and 35 microm to 100 microm, respectively; eye length and width grew from 1.2 to 3.2 and 0.9 to 2.5 mm, respect

Vertical transmission of Cardinium bacteria in parthenogenetic non-marine ostracods (Crustacea).

Bacterial endosymbionts are common in terrestrial arthropods, where they can manipulate host biology and reproduction, with Wolbachia and Cardinium as the best-known examples. Vertical transmission is a hallmark of such endosymbiosis. The high incidence of parthenogenesis makes non-marine ostracods (small, bivalved crustaceans) excellent models for exploring the potential effects of endosymbiosis on host reproduction in fully aquatic arthropods. Here, we complement DNA sequencing-based detection of Cardinium in non-marine ostracods with an imaging approach based on microdissection and fluoresc

Hydrostatic pressure effects on vestibular hair cell afferents in fish and crustacea.

Following the discovery of a hydrostatic pressure sensor with no associated gas phase in the crab, and the knowledge that several systems of cells in culture show long term alterations to small changes in hydrostatic pressure, we show here that vestibular type II hair cells in a well known model system (the isolated elasmobranch labyrinth), are sensitive to hydrostatic pressure. This new finding for the vertebrate vestibular system may provide an explanation for low levels of resting activity in vertebrate hair cells and explain how fish without swim bladders sense hydrostatic cues. It could h
