Storage-Induced Fruit Breakdown in Cryptocarya alba: Implications for the Conservation of a Keystone Mediterranean Recalcitrant Species.

Recalcitrant species are highly sensitive to drought and climate stress, posing urgent challenges for their conservation. Propagation for ex situ management and habitat restoration depends on adequate fruit handling, yet postharvest protocols remain insufficiently examined to support practical implementation. Cryptocarya alba, a dominant tree of the Chilean Mediterranean biome, reflects this gap. Despite its ecological relevance and central role in forest planning, the biological basis of its recalcitrant behavior has yet to be fully elucidated, constraining informed decision-making on its pro

Phenolic Antioxidant Protection in the Initial Growth of Cryptocarya alba: Two Different Responses against Two Invasive Fabaceae.

The allelophatic effect of the invasive Fabaceae, Ulex europaeus and Teline monspessulana, on the production of phenolic compounds in C. alba seedlings was investigated. It was expected that the oxidative stress caused by the allelochemicals released by both invaders would induce a differential response in the production of phenolic compounds in C. alba seedlings. These antioxidant mechanisms guaranteed C. alba plants' survival, even to the detriment of their initial growth. Cryptocarya alba seedlings were irrigated with T. monspessulana (TE) and U. europaeus (UE) extracts and water as a contr

Chemical composition and evaluation of antileishmanial and cytotoxic activities of the essential oil from leaves of Cryptocarya aschersoniana Mez. (Lauraceae Juss.).

Leishmaniasis is an endemic disease caused by protozoa of the genus Leishmania, which affects around two million people worldwide. One major drawback in the treatment of leishmaniasis is the emergence of resistance to current chemotherapeutics. Medicinal and aromatic plants constitute a major source of natural organic compounds. In this study, the leaf essential oil of Cryptocarya aschersoniana was obtained by hydrodistillation in a Clevenger-type apparatus, and the chemical composition was analyzed by GC-MS and GC-FID. The essential oil of these species was predominantly constituted by monote

Molecular docking and experimental evaluation of natural alkaloids from Chilean flora (Cryptocarya alba, Peumus boldus, and Laurelia sempervirens) for tyrosinase inhibition and depigmenting potential.

BACKGROUND: Hyperpigmentation disorders stem from tyrosinase-catalyzed melanin overproduction, worsened by ultraviolet oxidative stress. The native Chilean species Cryptocarya alba, Laurelia sempervirens, and Peumus boldus are sources of aporphine and benzylisoquinoline alkaloids, known for their antioxidant activity. Boldine derivatives, notably diacetylboldine (DAB, Lumiskin™), demonstrate commercial depigmenting efficacy, yet structure-activity relationship data are limited.. PURPOSE: Systematically evaluate pure alkaloids and boldine derivatives for tyrosinase inhibition via mushroom enz

Leaf Thermal and Chemical Properties as Natural Drivers of Plant Flammability of Native and Exotic Tree Species of the Valparaíso Region, Chile.

Forest fires are one of the main environmental threats in Chile. Fires in this Mediterranean climate region frequently affect native forests and exotic plantations, including in several cases urban and rural settlements. Considering the scarcity of information regarding the fire response dynamics of tree species that are frequently affected by fires, this study aims to establish a flammability classification according to the evolution of the fire initiation risk presented by the most affected forest species in the Valparaíso region. Three exotic species, Eucalyptus globulus, Pinus radiata, and
