Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and cubital tunnel syndrome (Cub.TS) are the two most common entrapment syndromes. Development of several validated outcome assessments have allowed conducting large scale epidemiological studies worldwide for the last decade regarding CTS, which have been providing reliable basic information. These studies have shown that CTS is more common than had been expected. It is estimated that lifetime risk of acquiring CTS is 10%, the annual incidence is 0.1% among adults, and overall prevalence is 2.7% among the general population. The most common cause is idiopathic inf

Cubital tunnel syndrome is the most common cause of symptomatic ulnar neuropathy. The unique anatomic course of the ulnar nerve around the elbow makes it particularly vulnerable at a location far from its terminal destination. The natural progression of cubital tunnel syndrome allows patients who have mild symptoms to be adequately treated nonsurgically. Minor changes in activity combined with appropriate splinting may acceptably alleviate symptoms. Surgical intervention is recommended for patients who have more severe symptoms. Current data confirm that in situ ulnar nerve decompression, part

Cubital tunnel syndrome is the second most common compression neuropathy in the upper extremity. Patients complain of numbness in the ring and small fingers, as well as hand weakness. Advanced disease is complicated by irreversible muscle atrophy and hand contractures. Ulnar nerve decompression can help to alleviate symptoms and prevent more advanced stages of dysfunction. Many surgical treatments exist for the treatment of cubital tunnel syndrome. In situ decompression, transposition of the ulnar nerve into the subcutaneous, intramuscular, or submuscular plane, or medial epicondylectomy have

Hand surgery : an international journal devoted to hand and upper limb surgery and related research : journal of the Asia-Pacific Federation of Societies for Surgery of the Hand2003eng
During a 15-year period, 145 patients presenting with cubital tunnel syndrome were operated upon. They are divided into two groups: (1) Primary tunnel syndrome - 27 cases (18.6%), with a "pure" past history, and (2) secondary - 118 cases (81.4%) with the lesion occurring after a known causative event. Investigation of 100 healthy persons, 50 men and 50 women (200 extremities) show, when elbow flexes, the ulnar nerve moves around the epicondyle in 50% of men, whereas in the remainder nerve subluxation or dislocation anteriorly to the epicondyle occurs. In women, the figures are 72% and 28%, res

Compression of the ulnar nerve at the elbow, or cubital tunnel syndrome, is the second most common peripheral nerve compression syndrome in the upper extremity. Diagnosis is made through a good history and physical examination. Electrodiagnostic testing can confirm the diagnosis and severity of injury to the nerve. Surgical intervention is indicated when nonoperative treatment does not relieve the symptoms. There is currently no consensus on the best surgical treatment of cubital tunnel syndrome. However, the only randomized prospective studies to compare treatment options to date indicate tha

Cubital tunnel syndrome is the second most common peripheral nerve entrapment syndrome in the human body. It is the cause of considerable pain and disability for patients. When appropriately diagnosed, this condition may be treated by both conservative and operative means. In this review, the current thinking on this important and common condition is discussed The recent literature on cubital tunnel syndrome was reviewed, and key papers on upper limb and hand surgery were discussed with colleagues.

Cubital tunnel syndrome is the second most common peripheral compression neuropathy. The unique anatomic relationships of the ulnar nerve at the elbow place it at risk for injury. Normally with elbow range of motion, the ulnar nerve is subjected to compression, traction, and frictional forces. As the elbow is flexed the arcuate ligament elongates producing a decrease in canal volume of 55%. Intraneural and extraneural pressures increase and have been shown to exceed 200 mm Hg with elbow flexion and flexor carpi ulnaris contraction. Because the ulnar nerve courses behind the elbow axis of rotat

Cubital tunnel syndrome is the second most common upper extremity compressive neuropathy. In recent years, rates of surgical treatment have increased, and the popularity of in situ decompression has grown. Nonsurgical treatment, aiming to decrease both compression and traction on the ulnar nerve about the elbow, is successful in most patients with mild nerve dysfunction. Recent randomized controlled trials assessing rates of symptom resolution and ultimate success have failed to identify a preferred surgical procedure. Ulnar nerve compression at the elbow, specifically the cubital tunnel, is the second most common upper extremity compression neuropathy. Many patients presenting with compression symptoms will subsequently undergo surgical intervention. We review the open surgical treatment of cubital tunnel syndrome and review the expected postoperative imaging appearance of those treatments on magnetic resonance imaging (MR), including: simple or in situ decompression, medial epicondylectomy, and anterior transposition, including subcutaneous, intramuscular, and submuscular variants. We discuss the relevant

Symptomatic cubital tunnel syndrome is a condition that frequently prompts patients to seek hand surgical care. Although cubital tunnel syndrome is readily diagnosed, achieving complete symptom resolution remains challenging. This article reviews related anatomy, clinical presentation, and current management options for cubital tunnel syndrome with an emphasis on contemporary outcomes research.

BACKGROUND: Our management of cubital tunnel syndrome has expanded to involve multiple adjunctive procedures, including supercharged end-to-side anterior interosseous to ulnar nerve transfer, cross-palm nerve grafts from the median to ulnar nerve, and profundus tenodesis. We also perform intraoperative brief electrical stimulation in patients with severe disease. The aims of this study were to evaluate the impact of adjunctive procedures and electrical stimulation on patient outcomes.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of 136 patients with cubital tunnel syndrome who underwent opera

Cubital tunnel syndrome is the second most common nerve compression syndrome observed in the upper extremity. Mechanical irritation of the ulnar nerve is also found in the upper and the lower arm even though cubital tunnel syndrome is documented most of the time. Apart from clinical examination electrophysiological testing is the most important contributor to the therapy decision. Depending on the clinical manifestation conservative treatment with elbow splinting may be appropriate. In the event of persistent or advanced nerve irritation surgical decompression may be the sensible intervention.

The cubital tunnel is the most common site of ulnar nerve entrapment. Previous ultrasound studies have demonstrated enlargement of the ulnar nerve in cubital tunnel syndrome but did not report on the cubital tunnel itself. Twenty-two individuals with cubital tunnel syndrome were evaluated with nerve conduction studies and ultrasound. The ultrasound measurement that most strongly correlated with conduction velocity was the ratio of ulnar nerve to cubital tunnel cross-sectional area with the elbow flexed. Measurement of this ratio may improve the diagnostic accuracy of ultrasound in cubital tunn

The choice for surgical treatment of cubital tunnel syndrome is no clearer today than when it was reviewed 10 years ago. There continue to be no significant prospective randomized trials to adequately compare the different surgical techniques. Even if such a trial were performed, most hand surgeons would probably continue to be skeptical. In the end, each surgeon must rely on his or her own personal experience or judgment. Based on the authors' experience in the treatment of cubital tunnel syndrome, they are confident that anterior transmuscular transposition of the ulnar nerve obtains the bes
