Prickly paddy melon (Cucumis myriocarpus) poisoning of cattle.

Twenty-six Hereford heifers died after eating mostly ripe fruit of Cucumis myriocarpus growing in a fallowed cultivation paddock. Four affected cattle were dehydrated and apparently had abdominal pain. Necropsy of three revealed intense congestion with haemorrhage of the alimentary tract, numerous C. myriocarpus seeds in ruminal contents, pulmonary congestion and oedema and, in two, swollen livers. Midzonal swelling and vacuolation of hepatocytes occurred in these two. C. myriocarpus fruit (83% by weight ripe) were dosed to two calves at 60 g wet weight/kg live weight. Both collapsed with tach

Influence of selected rootstock on growth parameters, accumulation of IAA and vitamins in scions of Cucumis sativus L. and Cucumis melo L.

Grafting with resistant rootstocks is one of the most effective methods to prevent soil-borne diseases, and it can influence vegetative growth, flowering, maturation periods, and fruit quality, thereby ensuring high yields. In this study, four species from the family Cucurbitaceae were tested as potential candidates for grafting cucumber and melon: Cucurbita ficifolia Bouché, Cucurbita moschata L., Cucurbita pepo L. and Cucurbita maxima Duch. The study focused on the grafting methods that optimize growth parameters and the accumulation of hormones and vitamins in rootstock. The results indicat

The effect of spermine on Tetranychus urticae-Cucumis sativus interaction.

BACKGROUND: Two spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae (Acari: Tetranychidae) is one of the most important plant pests in the world. Due to increased resistance of mites to acaricides, it is necessary to use other methods such as inducing resistance in plants by natural compounds for pests' management. Polyamins such as spermine are effective in increasing plant resistance to biotic and abiotic stressors. In this research, the effect of spermine treatments in cucumber plants on life table parameters of T. urticae was investigated. Also, top-down effect of spermine and T. urticae on cucumber

Component analysis of Cucumis melo L. leaves and their antioxidant activity.

Cucumis melo var. reticulatus Ser. (or netted melon 'Earl's Favourite'), a variety of Cucumis melo L., is widely cultivated in Shizuoka, Japan. However, the leaves and stems are discarded after harvest. Therefore, we investigated the chemical constituents of melon leaves to suggest potential applications. Air-dried melon leaves were extracted using methanol. The methanol extract was suspended in water and successively partitioned using n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and to yield each fraction. Eight flavone glycosides (1 - 8) and three terpenes (9 - 11) were obtained. The chemical structures of thes

MicroRNA-mediated regulation of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) fruit curvature.

Curved cucumber fruits are classified as a malformation, significantly compromising their commercial value. However, research on cucumber curvature remains limited, and there are no existing reports addressing post-transcriptional regulation mediated by microRNA. In this study, histological and endogenous hormone analyses revealed different distributions of auxin, brassinosteroid, and cytokinin between the concave and convex sides of curved fruits. This asymmetry in hormone distribution led to uneven growth. The growth was driven by parenchyma cells division on the second day post anthesis, an

Light responses, growth factors and phytochrome transformations of Cucumis seedling tissues.

The elongation of hypocotyl segments cut from etiolated Cucumis sativus seedlings is not affected by a single red light exposure at the start of the 20-hour growth period, but is inhibited by brief exposures repeated each hour or two even though these give no greater total energy. The inhibition is annulled if each red exposure is followed by far-red. The time course of phytochrome transformations in this tissue after a single red light exposure, followed spectrophotometrically, shows no anomalous characteristics that might correlate with the unusual pattern of responsiveness to red light. Influence of phosphorus management on melon (Cucumis melo L.) fruit quality.

BACKGROUND: At harvest time, melon quality is related to internal and external parameters, which are very important for consumer attractiveness and marketable yield. Several agronomic factors can affect the quality of melon fruits and among them mineral availability may play a significant role. Therefore the aim of the work was to investigate the effect of phosphorus fertigation on melon fruit (Cucumis melo L.) qualitative characteristics, such as fruit size and yield, pulp colour and firmness, aroma and taste, as well as the accumulation of bioactive antioxidant compounds, namely phenols and

Ethanol-induced anaphylaxis following ingestion of overripe rock melon, Cucumis melo.

BACKGROUND: Anaphylactic reactions to ethanol are rare with only seven cases reported in the literature. All previous cases have occurred following ingestion of alcoholic beverages or food to which an alcoholic beverage has been added. To date there are no cases in the literature of ethanol-induced anaphylaxis caused by the accumulation of endogenous ethanol in overripe fruit. METHODS: We report a patient with ethanol-induced anaphylaxis who developed anaphylaxis following ingestion of overripe, but not fresh rock melon (Cucumis melo). The patient is a 24-year-old, previously well woman who e

Azospirillum brasilense modulates the Cucumis sativus root transcriptome under contrasting Fe regimes.

Iron (Fe) deficiency limits crop productivity, particularly in alkaline soils where Fe availability is low. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), such as Azospirillum brasilense, may enhance plant nutrient acquisition. Here, we investigated the transcriptional modulations underlying the interaction between cucumber (Cucumis sativus) and A. brasilense under Fe sufficient and Fe deficient conditions through physiological and transcriptomic analyses. Bacterial inoculation significantly increased root ferric-chelate reductase activity, particularly under Fe deficiency. Transcriptomic profil

Cucumis melo pectin as potential candidate to control herpes simplex virus infection.

The herpes simplex virus, also known as HSV, is an important human pathogen. Acyclovir (ACV) is the first-line antiviral for the treatment of HSV infections; nevertheless HSV resistance to ACV has been increasingly reported and, therefore, search for alternative drugs have been encouraged. Herein, the effect of Cucumis melo sulfated pectin (SPCm) was evaluated in the HSV-1 infection. Pectin cytotoxicity and its antiherpetic action were determined by assays of MTT and plaque reduction, respectively. The SPCm concentration that reduced the cell viability by 50% (CC50) was 1440 μg/mL, while the c

CsCYP82D47 Is Identified as a Candidate Gene for Vivipary in Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.).

Vivipary adversely affects the production process of the cucumber seed industry and greatly limits the popularization of cucumber varieties. Identification of the cucumber seed vivipary phenotype and screening of vivipary-associated genes will provide important theoretical value and practical significance for solving this problem in agricultural production. In this study, cucumber near-isogenic lines with significant differences in vivipary traits (viviparous line F and non-viviparous line BF) were successfully screened and used to construct genetic populations. Characterization of the solution reactivity of a basic heme peroxidase from Cucumis sativus.

A basic heme peroxidase has been isolated from cucumber (Cucumis sativus) peelings and characterized through electronic and (1)H NMR spectra from pH 3 to 11. The protein, as isolated, contains a high-spin ferriheme which in the low pH region is sensitive to two acid-base equilibria with apparent pK(a) values of approximately 5 and 3.6, assigned to the distal histidine and to a heme propionate, respectively. At high pH, a new low-spin species develops with an apparent pK(a) of 11, likely due to the binding of an hydroxide ion to the sixth (axial) coordination position of the Fe(III). A number o

Foliar application of nitrates limits lead uptake by Cucumis sativus L. plants.

Lead is a toxic heavy metal, which accumulates in the soil and is readily absorbed by plant roots. The uptake of toxic elements by crops is a serious threat to human health. For this reason, it is important to prevent the incorporation of heavy metals into the food chain. Our previous study showed that foliar application of calcium nitrate reduces the intensity of lead uptake by different plant species. A significant decrease in metal concentration was observed both in the roots and in the shoots of three crops: tomato, cucumber, and flax. The present research investigated the mechanism for li

Prevalence of Foliar Diseases on Muskmelon (Cucumis melo var. melo) in South Carolina.

Muskmelons (Cucumis melo var. melo) grown in the eastern United States are affected by several foliar diseases caused by fungi and an oomycete. The objective of this survey of muskmelon production regions in South Carolina was to determine the prevalence of foliar diseases on spring crops to refine fungicide recommendations. In total, 34 fields from 21 growers in 10 counties were sampled using stratified cluster sampling. A total of 20, 20, and 40 diseased leaves were collected in each field in 2019, 2020, and 2021, respectively, along four transects forming a square of 1225 or 2,500 m2. After

Novel Bisexual Flower Control Gene Regulates Sex Differentiation in Melon (Cucumis melo L.).

The sex-control system involves several mechanisms in melon. The present study identified a novel bisexual flower control gene from the hermaphroditic melon germplasm, different from the previously recognized one. Genetic analysis showed that a single recessive gene in the newly identified locus b controlled the bisexual flower phenotype in melons. We generated 1431 F2 segregating individuals for genetic mapping of locus b, which was delimited to a 47.94 kb region. Six candidate genes were identified in the delimited interval, and candidate No. 4 encoding melon CPR5 protein was selected as the

QTL Mapping of Heat Tolerance in Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) at Adult Stage.

Heat stress during cucumber production often leads to sunburn of leaves, growth retardation of stems and roots, fruit malformation, and even plant death, which have a great impact on the fruit quality and yield. However, no studies on the genetic inheritance and quantitative trait locus mapping of heat tolerance in cucumber at the adult stage have been reported yet. In this study, a set of 86 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived from "99281" (heat-tolerant) and "931" (heat-sensitive) were used to identify the heat tolerance QTL in summer 2018, 2019, and 2020. Eight-week-old plants were expo
