Mechanisms of resistance to sulfur dioxide in the Cucurbitaceae.

The relative resistance of four cultivars of the Cucurbitaceae (Cucumis sativus L. cv. National Pickling, and inbred line SC 25; Cucurbita pepo L. cv. Prolific Straightneck Squash, and cv. Small Sugar Pumpkin) to SO(2) was determined. According to plots of the degree of exposure to SO(2) (which depends on the SO(2) concentration and the duration of the exposure), there is an 8-fold difference in resistance to this toxic gas among these cultivars. However, if the degree of injury is plotted as a function of the amount of SO(2) absorbed, all four cultivars appear similarly sensitive to the gas.

Trichosanthes metamorpha (Cucurbitaceae), a striking new species from Guangxi, China.

Trichosanthes metamorpha, a new species from Guangxi Autonomous Region, China, is described and illustrated. Morphologically, it closely resembles T. dunniana and T. pubera but can be readily distinguished by its tiny black dots about the size of a pinpoint (c. 0.1 mm in diameter) on the stem surface, the leaf shape and basal leaf marking patterns, short and brittle petal fringes, orange-yellow fruit, and broadly ellipsoid seeds without ridges or ornaments. Molecular phylogenetic analyses based on a plastid coding sequence dataset comprising 67 protein-coding genes (cp-CDS) and a concatenated

Out of the blue: family-wide loss of anthocyanin biosynthesis in Cucurbitaceae.

Plant pigmentation secrets are among the oldest interests of plant scientists, with pigments such as chlorophyll, carotenoids, flavonoids and betalains contributing to the diversity of hues in higher plants. Anthocyanins, a class of flavonoids responsible for vibrant shades of pink, red and blue pigmentation, are almost ubiquitous in angiosperms but are replaced by betalains in some families in the order Caryophyllales. We investigated anthocyanin pigmentation in Cucurbitaceae, one of the largest fruit and vegetable families, characterised by white and yellow flowers and red, orange and green

Codon Usage Bias Analysis of Chloroplast Genomes in Six Cucurbitaceae Species.

Background and Objectives: Codon usage bias (CUB), the non-uniform usage of synonymous codons, is prevalent in plant chloroplast genomes and plays important roles in gene expression and genome evolution. However, systematic comparisons of CUB patterns across genera in the Cucurbitaceae family remain limited. This study aimed to characterize CUB patterns and identify their driving forces in the chloroplast genomes of six Cucurbitaceae species. Methods: We analyzed the complete chloroplast genomes of six Cucurbitaceae species, watermelon (Citrullus lanatus), melon (Cucumis melo), cucumber (Cucum

Comparative chloroplast genomics and phylogenomic insights into the genus Zehneria (Cucurbitaceae).

The genus Zehneria (Cucurbitaceae) presents significant taxonomic challenges due to morphological similarities among species and a lack of resolution in molecular studies. In this study, we sequenced and assembled the chloroplast genomes of seven African Zehneria species collected from Kenya, complementing a previously published accession (Zehneria sp. MZ427944.1), to establish a comprehensive plastome-based framework for the genus. The plastomes ranged from 157,150 to 157,365 bp and exhibited a conserved quadripartite structure, with 130-132 annotated genes, including 86-87 protein-coding gen

Semiochemicals from Trichosanthes anguina (Cucurbitaceae) plants influence behavior in Diaphania indica.

BACKGROUND: First to third instars of Diaphania indica (Saunders) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) feed on the lower surface of leaves, while fourth and fifth instars gregariously consume leaves of Trichosanthes anguina L. After defoliating, the caterpillar also attacks flowers and fruits of the plant and finally, results in loss of crop yield. Therefore, behavioral responses of D. indica adults were investigated to volatiles from undamaged (UD), insect-damaged (ID, plants after feeding by D. indica larvae) and jasmonic acid (JA) treated T. anguina plants. RESULTS: Females showed attraction to volati

Composite Cucurbitaceae Plants as a Tool to Study Physiological and Molecular Mechanisms of Root Development.

Composite plants are a convenient model for obtaining a whole plant with undisturbed regulatory links between the shoot and root system, while the roots carry the properties specified by the researcher. This approach allows expressing transgenes only in roots, which in some cases may be preferable over the expression of transgenes in all organs of a non-chimeric transgenic plant. Composite plants have been widely used to study the nitrogen fixation process, mycorrhizal symbioses, and the interaction of plant roots with various pathogens. The current protocol for Agrobacterium rhizogenes-mediat

Mechanistic in vitro study of the effect of Cucurbita moschata (Cucurbitaceae) on carbohydrate digestive enzymes.

Diabetes is marked by postprandial hyperglycemia (PHG), an abnormal rise in blood glucose after meals. A key therapeutic goal to reduce PHG is the inhibition of α-amylase (αAM) and α-glucosidase (αGL), enzymes that break down carbohydrates into sugars. Cucurbita moschata has been shown to inhibit both enzymes. However, its inhibition mechanism has not been explored. This study investigated the in vitro inhibition mechanisms of αAM and αGL and conducted a metabolomic analysis of C. moschata (edible part) water-extract (CME), aiming to preliminarily identify its bioactive compounds (BCs). The in

Genome-Wide Identification and Characterization of OSC Gene Family in Gynostemma pentaphyllum (Cucurbitaceae).

Gynostemma pentaphyllum is a traditional Chinese medicinal plant of considerable application value and commercial potential, primarily due to its production of various bioactive compounds, particularly dammarane-type triterpenoid saponins that are structurally analogous to ginsenosides. Oxidosqualene cyclase (OSC), a pivotal enzyme in the biosynthesis of triterpenoid metabolites in plants, catalyzes the conversion of oxidosqualene into triterpenoid precursors, which are essential components of the secondary metabolites found in G. pentaphyllum. To elucidate the role of OSC gene family members

A Method for Locating Growth Points of Cucurbitaceae Plug Seedlings Based on Structured Light Vision.

To address the difficulty in growth point localization caused by cotyledon overlapping and leaf occlusion during plug seedling grafting, a localization method based on grid structured light is proposed. An acquisition system consisting of a complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) camera and a grid structured light laser projector is established. A multi-depth plane calibration method is adopted to fit the light plane equation for each laser line. To address the grid line discontinuity problem, a coding method based on three-dimensional constraints of light planes is proposed. The cotyle

Tandem Duplication-Driven Neofunctionalization of UDP-Glycosyltransferases Shapes the Diversification of Triterpenoid Saponins in the Cucurbitaceae.

Tandem duplication of tailoring enzymes allows evolutionary innovation that diversifies plant specialized metabolism. Here, we present an interesting example of how tandem duplicated UDP-glycosyltransferases undergo neofunctionalization and shape the chemical diversity of triterpenoid saponins in the Cucurbitaceae family. A chromosome-level genome of Siraitia grosvenorii was assembled and aligned with multiple cucurbit genomes, revealing a specific UGT73AM tandem duplication responsible for regio-selective glycosylation (e.g. the rare 1,4-linked disaccharide) of diverse saponins such as mogros
