It is not just a manner of speaking: "Mind reading," or working out what others are thinking and feeling, is markedly similar to print reading. Both of these distinctly human skills recover meaning from signs, depend on dedicated cortical areas, are subject to genetically heritable disorders, show cultural variation around a universal core, and regulate how people behave. But when it comes to development, the evidence is conflicting. Some studies show that, like learning to read print, learning to read minds is a long, hard process that depends on tuition. Others indicate that even very young,

The target article should help productively orient studies of egalitarianism in human societies. However, it ignores the role of cultural transmission and evolution in the maintenance and transformation of the socio-ecological processes supporting egalitarian behavior. Each of the proposed processes are manifest and reproduced through culturally mediated behavior, as is made visible through research on children's social learning and inter-group interaction.

We report an experimental test of the hypothesis that contrasting traditions will persist for longer, maintaining cultural differences between otherwise similar groups, under conditions of uncertainty about payoffs from individual learning. We studied the persistence of two alternative, experimentally-introduced, task solutions in chains of human participants. In some chains, participants were led to believe that final payoffs would be difficult to predict for an innovative solution, and in others, participants were aware that their final payoff would be directly linked to their immediate solu

While interaction and problem-solving shape cultural structure, as the social tinkering framework suggests, stability and erosion too are possible and equally significant outcomes. Navigation and mushroom foraging illustrate how and why sophisticated systems can persist without formal institutions or writing. Recognising diverse trajectories challenges linear stage models and highlights cultural evolution as context-dependent, adaptive, and often intentionally stable.

The ability to build upon previous knowledge-cumulative cultural evolution-is a hallmark of human societies. While cumulative cultural evolution depends on the interaction between social systems, cognition and the environment, there is increasing evidence that cumulative cultural evolution is facilitated by larger and more structured societies. However, such effects may be interlinked with patterns of social wiring, thus the relative importance of social network architecture as an additional factor shaping cumulative cultural evolution remains unclear. By simulating innovation and diffusion of

Over the course of human history, it has been common to use plants for medicinal purposes, such as for providing relief from particular maladies and self-medication. Opium represents one longstanding remedy that has been used to address a range of medical conditions, alleviating discomfort often in ways that have proven pleasurable. Opium is a combination of compounds obtained from the mature fruit of opium poppy, papaver somniferum. Morphine and its biosynthetic precursors thebaine and codeine constitute the main bioactive opiate alkaloids contained in opium. Opium usage in ancient cultures i

Widespread teaching behavior in the society is thought to be unique to humans and it contributes to our success by improving the efficiency of cultural transmission and by enhancing cultural accumulation. However, there is a puzzle in the evolution of teaching because teaching is an altruistic behavior and incompleteness of vertical transmission due to the chance of oblique transmission (cultural transmission from non-related individual). Here we investigate the effect of the probability of oblique transmission by studying to what extent the existence of oblique transmission can lead to evolut

We advocate for an integrative long-term perspective on time, noting that culture changes on timescales amenable to behavioral genetic study with appropriate design and modeling extensions. We note the need for replications of behavioral genetic studies to examine model invariance across long-term timescales, which would afford examination of specified as well as unspecified cultural moderators of behavioral genetic effects.

Hypertension is epidemic and currently affects 25% of the world's population and is a major cause of stroke, congestive heart failure, and end-stage renal disease. Interestingly, there is evidence that the increased frequency of hypertension is a recent event in human history and correlates with dietary changes associated with Westernization. In this article, we review the evidence that links uric acid to the cause and epidemiology of hypertension. Specifically, we review the evidence that the mutation of uricase that occurred in the Miocene that resulted in a higher serum uric acid in humans

Chater and Christiansen rightly argue that cultural change is intelligent, directed, and coordinative rather than blind. But the metaphor of tinkering they borrow from Jacob is intelligible only because biology specifies what tinkering is for: inclusive fitness. In their account, the analogous criterion is missing. Restoring fitness, channeled through local ecologies, would supply what the framework currently lacks.

Common baldness (alopecia) increasingly affects a higher number of individuals at earlier ages, independently of gender. One of the reasons could be lack of knowledge concerning its etiology. The human being has evolved to become a naked monkey, although there is no apparent reason to continue the evolutionary process up to becoming a bald monkey. According to this theory, common baldness is a degenerative process derived from certain inadequate cultural practices, such as excessive hair cutting or certain types of haircuts that prevent contact among hairs themselves and limit outside contact

Human biological and cultural evolution are tightly intertwined; the two display dependent relationships and each influences the trajectory of the other. Archaeological evidence for hominin culture first emerges ca 3.3 million years ago, but increasing data attests to an earlier, deeply rooted onset of gene-culture co-evolution in our lineage. Diverse phenotypic traits are linked to Stone Age culture via the latter's impact on the survival and success of early human populations. Hominin cognitive and language capabilities, along with the anatomy of the hand, are key examples. Similarly, variat

The monitoring of quality indicators, combined with a detailed risk analysis, validates the process of automated blood culture. Here we report the methodology of 5 years monitoring for 5 indicators at the Biology Department of Foch Hospital: volume sampled, proportion of contaminants, proportion of positive blood cultures in each instrument and drawer, epidemiological indicator and proportion of false-positive instrument signals. The results obtained were outside the expected target for the volume sampled and were acceptable for the other indicators. The analysis of these results leads us to d

Through cumulative cultural evolution, human populations discover novel solutions that allow them to solve complex problems. However, populations also reliably develop and sustain practices that are costly yet appear to have no effect on their stated outcome, such as bloodletting, divination, and malicious sorcery. Here, we show that ineffective, costly solutions can develop and be maintained because of their cognitive appeal. In a pre-registered transmission-chain experiment, participants were tasked with developing a solution to a problem over several trials, after which they passed instruct

The internet meme, a multimodal artifact of digital communication, has become a potent force in shaping contemporary culture, politics, and social behavior. Existing analyses have often examined memes through discrete lenses of cognitive psychology, cultural studies, or computer science. This review argues for a more profound, integrative framework grounded in the Extended Evolutionary Synthesis (EES). It posits that the societal influence of internet memes is best understood as a manifestation of high-speed cultural evolution operating within a technologically constructed digital niche. This

Chance-based gambling has been a recurrent cultural activity throughout history and across many diverse human societies. In this paper, I combine quantitative and qualitative data and present a cultural evolutionary framework to explain why the odds in games of chance in premodern China appeared "designed" to ensure a moderate yet favorable house advantage. This is especially intriguing since extensive research in the history of probability has shown that, prior to the development of probability theory, people had very limited understanding of the nature of random events and were generally dis

This editorial responds to Mason et al.'s (1995) "Culturally Sanctioned Secrets: Latino Men's Nondisclosure of HIV Infection to Family, Friends, and Lovers." Culture is an evolving dynamic phenomenon shaped by society, psychology, and history. Historically, familism and simpatía have been Hispanic cultural assets. As times change, however, values and behaviors that served a culture for generations may become liabilities unless they evolve to fit the changing world of the culture. In the case of Hispanic gay men, the desire to protect family members is a barrier to disclosure of HIV status. Mas

Despite the occurrence of encouraging political and social changes in the past few years, many beliefs about women's role in intimate relationships persist, influencing their response to domestic violence (DV). This study aims to analyze the influence of recent policies against DV in Portugal, concerning particularly intimate partner violence against women and their perceptions about the victimization process. Two samples of women ( n = 126 each) reporting an aggressive act allegedly perpetrated by the current or former male partner were interviewed with a hiatus of 5 years (before and after s

Breasts have evolved as a functional and aesthetic unit. The perception of society toward social exposure of the breast has been extremely diverse, not only temporally through the same civilization but also among contemporary parallel societies in geographically diverse areas. This article explores the spatial and temporal evolution of the outlook toward social exposure of breast over the past 3000 years among different societies, countries, and religions. The level of "acceptance" or "tolerance" toward visibility of breast in social situations was historically guided by social conditioning. R
