Cumulative trauma disorders.

The relationship between work activities and the diagnostic entities discussed in this article is poorly understood, but their development is probably multifactorial. The enormous cost to industry and society is driving many investigators to study the causes and pathologic manifestations of CTDs, and this research should lead to improved strategies for treating and preventing work-related injuries. Prevention, however, will work only if both management and labor participate in preventive efforts. When a task force approach can be implemented and senior management gives it the power to make eff

Ergonomics and cumulative trauma disorders.

Chronic tendon and nerve disorders of the upper extremity, such as tendinitis and carpal tunnel syndrome, are a common problem among persons who routinely perform hand-intensive work. This article summarizes the most commonly reported occupational risk factors: repetitiveness, forcefulness, certain postures, mechanical stresses, exposure to vibration, and exposure to low temperatures. It describes how to look for these factors and how to control them through the design of work equipment and procedures.

Work pace, stress, and cumulative trauma disorders.

This paper discusses the potential roles of work pace and work pressure as risk factors in the development of cumulative trauma disorders. Specifically, electromyographic (EMG) data were collected from the forearm flexor muscles of workers performing a highly repetitive task. This task had previously been identified as one that involved a high incidence of cumulative trauma disorders. Workers were asked to increase and decrease their work pace for short periods of time. The EMG data indicated that faster work paces were accompanied by higher forces. However, it was also noted that unsuccessful

Hand wrist cumulative trauma disorders in industry.

A total of 574 active workers from six different industrial sites were categorised into four force repetitive exposure groups. Workers in low force-low repetitive jobs served as an internal comparison population for the three other groups. Videotapes and surface electromyography were used to estimate hand force and repetitiveness. The presence of cumulative trauma disorders (CTD) was determined by structured interview and standardised non-invasive physical examination. Only workers who had been working on the study jobs for at least one year at the time of evaluation were eligible for selectio

Neurologic manifestations of cumulative trauma disorder.

Cumulative trauma disorders plague industry, yet definite diagnostic criteria and treatment guidelines have not been established. This study is a review of a group of 470 worker's compensation patients with upper-extremity pain. Eighty-four of these patients had neurologic symptoms that were related to repetitive activities, rather than a specific pain-producing incident. Sixty-six of these patients had some evidence of discrete nerve compression and underwent electrodiagnostic studies (EDS). From this set of patients, we established two different patterns of neurologic symptoms related to cum

Occupational cumulative trauma disorders of the upper extremity.

The umbrella term cumulative trauma disorders (CTDs) (also known as repetitive strain injuries, overuse syndromes, and repetitive motion disorders) covers a number of similar conditions arising from overuse of the joints or soft tissues of the upper extremity. Occupational CTDs have become a common problem in the workplace. These disorders are costly to the employer, the worker, and society in terms of time lost from work and resulting disability. Within the past decade, occupational therapists and physical therapists specializing in rehabilitation of work-related musculoskeletal injuries have

Avoiding cumulative trauma disorders in shops and offices.

Cumulative trauma disorders have been medically described for about 100 yr and have been related to physical activities for nearly 300 yr. Yet, avoiding these disorders in the shop and office is becoming of urgent concern only now, particularly because of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA's) investigation and enforcement program. Such disorders occur most often in soft tissues of the body, particularly at tendons and their sheaths. They may irritate or damage nerves and impede blood flow. They are frequent in the hand/wrist/forearm area; for example, in the carpal tunne

Cumulative trauma disorders: an ergonomic approach for prevention.

Clinical practice can place the dental hygienist at risk of acquiring cumulative trauma disorders (CTD). This article describes causative factors of CTD and suggests implementation of ergonomic intervention--by way of clinical and environmental factors--as a method of preventing and/or reducing CTD in the workplace. Included is a chronology of the rehabilitation process of a dental hygienist who has been disabled by CTD. Observing this clinician's re-training process, which included utilizing an ergonomically designed operator chair, arm and wrist supports, and modification of operator positio

Psychosocial influences in the development of cumulative trauma disorders.

STUDY DESIGN: This study is a single-phase, qualitative study using grounded theory methodology. INTRODUCTION: Cumulative trauma disorders (CTDs) are musculoskeletal disorders that impact health and productivity. CTD risk factors are present in the workplace, home, and community. Occupational and physical therapists specializing in hand and upper extremity rehabilitation (hand therapists) are widely involved with this population. Hand therapists often employ a medical model in the assessment and treatment of these conditions; however, the medical model has not proven to be consistently effect

Perceived psychological stress and upper extremity cumulative trauma disorders.

This report presents data exploring the relationship between perceived psychological stress and several variables implicated in the etiology of upper extremity cumulative trauma disorders (UECTDs). The sample was 354 workers from three different manufacturing companies. The primary job exposure for the subjects was that they were engaged in jobs that involved repetitious movements of the upper extremities, primarily of the hands and arms. Data collection included a detailed health history, a comprehensive physical examination of the upper extremities, limited electrodiagnostic testing, Cohen's

Detecting cumulative trauma disorders in workers performing repetitive tasks.

On-site testing of 157 poultry processors disclosed that 50% had three or more abnormal upper extremity findings out of a total of 22 possibles. The average worker had five to six abnormal findings. Impaired pinch strength, decreased vibration sensitivity in the fingertips, and reports of current numbness were the most prevalent. Of workers with signs, 25% reported no symptoms, whereas only 8% of workers reported symptoms but had no signs. The investigators concluded that this measurement method has utility for assessments of worker populations to determine prevalence of CTDs and, potentially,

A high prevalence of cumulative trauma disorders in Iranian instrumentalists.

BACKGROUND: Cumulative trauma disorders (CTDs) are common in musicians and their prevalence has been the subject of a number of studies in most western countries. Such studies are scarce in developing countries despite the possibility that CTDs may have a different prevalence in these countries, especially when considering traditional musical instruments and different methods of playing. Although not formally studied before, according to our experience the prevalence of CTDs seemed to be high among Iranian instrumentalists. We proposed this study to determine the prevalence of CTDs in amateur

Cumulative trauma disorders among educational interpreters. Contributing factors and intervention.

Upper extremity cumulative trauma disorders became a potentially significant occupational hazard among sign language interpreters at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf in the 1988-89 academic year. The following case control study was conducted to identify factors that might play a role in developing, exacerbating, and maintaining upper extremity cumulative trauma disorders among interpreters. Investigations were conducted to determine whether medical status, physical capacities, interpreting styles, pain, fatigue, and job stress differed among NTID's sign language interpreters. Thi

Ergonomic risk factors for cumulative trauma disorders in VDU operators.

The objectives of this study were to investigate the rate of cumulative trauma disorders (CTDs) in the upper body and to describe the associations of such disorders with ergonomic parameters in a group of data entry operators. A total of 173 data entry operators volunteered to take part in the study. Questionnaires were used to investigate their medical history. Diagnoses of CTDs were made with clinical tests. A visual posture analysis of the workers and an ergonomic analysis of workstations and workload were used to reveal risk factors. Neck and shoulder pain, extensor tendonitis of the wrist

Work-related cumulative trauma disorders and interpreters for the deaf.

With the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), increasing numbers of interpreters for the deaf are being employed in education, industry, or other settings. Professional interpreters are at risk for developing cumulative trauma disorders due to the nature of their work which involves rapid repetitive movements of the arms and hands. One hundred forty-five interpreters for the deaf responded to a survey questionnaire designed to identify their work experiences and development of physical pain/discomfort related to work. Incidence and duration of pain/discomfort is positively cor

Cumulative trauma disorders of the hand and wrist in the auto industry.

Surveillance for cumulative trauma disorders (CTDs) of the hand and wrist was carried out in five US automotive plants from 1985 to 1986, using Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Form 200 injury and illness logs and medical insurance claims. Results using both record sources indicated that hand and wrist disorders may be more common in foundries than in other types of automotive plants. Similarly, in assembly plants, employees in certain departments appeared to be at higher risk for CTDs. Although our results are based on small numbers of cases, they suggest plants and depart

Thinking of a maladaptive occlusion as an orthopedic cumulative trauma disorder.

AIM: The authors review the possible connection between a dental malocclusion and a temporal mandibular disorder (TMD). METHODOLOGY: The authors have reflected on several patient case histories to remind us that there may be instances when a simple case of dental malocclusion could be blamed for instigating the signs and symptoms of TMD. The common denominator for this discussion is the situation of joint pain, dysfunction and/or myalgia. Patient-reported signs and symptoms, along with treatment results and progress notes were evaluated. RESULTS: The onset of TMD signs could be traced to an

Detection of cumulative trauma disorders of upper extremities in the workplace.

Surveillance for musculoskeletal disorders of the upper extremity in industry is in its infancy. Research efforts to elucidate the causal factors of these disorders often rely on either the analysis of existing medical records, worker compensation records (passive surveillance), or the surveying of workers with questionnaire and physical examination (active surveillance). The use of either type of data for routine surveillance presents several difficulties illustrated with the results presented in this paper. The analysis of existing records is generally less costly but the reliability of the

Medical screening of office workers for upper extremity cumulative trauma disorders.

An apparent "outbreak" of cumulative trauma disorders (CTDs) was noted in a subset of white-collar workers employed in medical illustration and medical graphic arts. Among graphic artists (n = 7), there were three cases of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), based on patient reports of personal physician diagnoses; no such reports occurred among other workers in the department (n = 39, p = .0023, Fisher's exact test). Jobs were studied to identify possible risk factors for CTDs, and workers underwent a standardized medical screening protocol. Specific work elements were found to be performed more fr

Industrial wrist motions and incidence of hand/wrist cumulative trauma disorders.

One of the major research voids in the study of occupational hand/wrist cumulative trauma disorders (CTDs) is the lack of quantification of the relationship between the known kinematic risk factors, such as wrist angle and repetition, and CTD risk. A previously published article in this journal (Marras and Schoenmarklin 1993) reported the descriptive results from a quantitative surveillance study performed in industry in which worker's wrist motions were monitored on the factory floor. The wrist motion components that were monitored on each subject were position, velocity, and acceleration mea
