An epidemiological survey of Cupressaceae pollenosis in Italy.

Allergic reaction to Cupressaceae and Taxodiaceae pollens appears to be on the increase in the last years in Italy. An epidemiological survey on this pollenosis was conducted in 12 Italian centers. The diagnostic panel consisted of seven Cupressaceae and Taxodiaceae genus (Cupressus sempervirens, Cupressus arizonica, Cryptomeria japonica, Chamaecyparis obtusa, Thuja orientalis, Taxus baccata, and Juniperus oxycedrus). A total of 3057 pollen-sensitized outpatients were examined. The study took place from November 1999 to March 2000. At the same time pollen counts were carried out. The prevalenc

Biologically Active Compounds from Bark of Juniperus communis (Cupressaceae).

The component composition of the bark was studied in Juniperus communis L. (Cupressaceae). The juniper bark was shown to contain 3.5 times more extractives than wood. Individual component compositions of ethanol and petroleum extracts of J. communis bark was determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The ethanol and petroleum bark extracts were found to differ in component composition. Monosaccharides, disaccharides, and resin acids were major constituents of the J. communis ethanol extract, while resin acids, fatty acids, and sterols were major constituents of the petroleum extract.

[Epidemiologic investigation of the pollen allergy to Cupressaceae in a population at risk for atopy].

The so-called emerging allergens have gained particular interest as causes of atopic diseases, and among these the cypress pollen. In fact, several allergens derived from the Cupressaceae family have appeared for the first time in new environments, thus causing unexpected phenomena. From May 2002 to May 2003 we have examined 560 patients who sought medical attention at the Center for allergic diseases in children. The patients came from various towns and villages from Southern Sardinia and all had undergone prick tests for inhaled allergens, irrespective of their complaints. The presenting sym

Rampant hybridization underlies cytonuclear discordance and shallow plastid divergence in Juniperus (Cupressaceae).

Reconstructing plant evolutionary history is complicated by processes such as hybridization, incomplete lineage sorting and the interplay of ecological adaptation with morphological innovation. These generate reticulate patterns that challenge tree-like models and can bias inferences from single genomic compartments. These issues are pronounced in long-lived woody lineages. To examine these dynamics, we analysed Juniperus, a widely distributed Northern Hemisphere gymnosperm genus, using near-complete taxon sampling, complete plastomes and >3000 nuclear single-copy genes recovered via target-en

Exceptional anatomical preservation of Jurassic Austrohamia leaves from Patagonia reveals distinctive features of ancient Cupressaceae.

PREMISE: The Mesozoic fossil record of Cupressaceae is widespread and abundant, indicating that members of the family were dominant components of ancient ecosystems and that several cupressaceous lineages had higher species diversity in the past than they do today. Despite this extensive record, anatomical evidence remains critical to understanding the evolution of the group. This study provides new insights into the early evolutionary history of Cupressaceae and their adaptations to Jurassic environments through exceptionally preserved fossils from Patagonia. METHODS: Silicified leaves and t

Elicitor-Mediated Enhancement of Secondary-Metabolite Biosynthesis in Juniperus (Cupressaceae): Current Advances and Future Perspectives.

Juniperus species are a rich source of pharmacologically important secondary metabolites, including terpenoids, lignans, flavonoids, and phenolic compounds. However, the commercial utilization of these metabolites is limited by the plant's slow growth, poor natural regeneration, and environmental variability affecting metabolite accumulation. Integrating plant tissue culture with elicitation strategies is a promising approach for sustainably producing these valuable compounds. This review summarizes the diversity, biological activities, and biotechnological significance of secondary metabolite

Austrocedrus from the Late Cretaceous of Antarctica and its implications for the early evolution of southern cypresses (Callitroideae, Cupressaceae).

PREMISE: The modern distribution of the southern cypresses, Callitroideae (Cupressaceae), reflects a classic Gondwanan distribution. The initial diversification of Callitroideae is estimated to have occurred during the Cretaceous, yet fossils from this period are rare, hampering our understanding of its early evolutionary history. METHODS: A permineralized cluster of callitroid seed cones has been recovered from the Late Cretaceous Santa Marta Formation on James Ross Island, Antarctica. The specimen was sectioned using the acetate peel technique. We conducted a comparative morphological and a

Influence of Atmospheric Pollutants on Allergic Sensitization to Cupressaceae, Olea, and Platanus Pollen in the Community of Madrid (2017-2021).

Tree pollen is the most abundant in the Community of Madrid (CAM), and specifically, pollen types from Olea, Cupressaceae, and Platanus are the most allergenic, after Gramineae, in this Spanish region. Air pollutants are one of the most significant stress factors for wind-pollinated vegetation, especially in urban areas, and can cause alterations in the immune system and the consequent triggering of type I hypersensitivity reactions mediated by immunoglobulin E (IgE). This study analyses the allergic sensitization caused by the interrelation of O3, NO2, and PM10 pollutants with the tree pollen

The nonpeptide alpha-eudexp6l from Juniperus virginiana Linn. (Cupressaceae) inhibits omega-agatoxin IVA-sensitive Ca2+ currents and synaptosomal 45Ca2+ uptake.

Recently, the omega-agatoxin IVA (omega-Aga-IVA)-sensitive Ca2+ channel has been demonstrated to play an important role in the physiological neurotransmitter release in mammalian nerve terminals. In this study, we demonstrate that alpha-eudesmol from Juniperus virginiana Linn. (Cupressaceae) inhibits omega-Aga-IVA-sensitive Ca2+ channels in rat brain synaptosomes and cerebellar Purkinje cells. Thirty millimolar KCl-induced 45Ca2+ uptake into the synaptosomes was inhibited by omega-Aga-IVA but insensitive to omega-conotoxin GVIA (omega-CTX-GVIA, N-type Ca2+ channel blocker) and nicardipine (L-t

Anticholinesterase and Anti-Inflammatory Activities of the Essential Oils of Sawdust and Resin-Rich Bark from Azorean Cryptomeria japonica (Cupressaceae): In Vitro and In Silico Studies.

Alzheimer's disease (AD), a multifactorial neurodegenerative disorder characterized by severe cognitive impairment, affects millions of people worldwide. However, AD therapy remains limited and mainly symptomatic-focused, with acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors being the major available drugs. Thus, AD is considered by the WHO as a disorder of public health priority. Among several strategies that have been identified to combat AD, the use of natural multi-target drug ligands (MTDLs) appears to be a promising approach. In this context, we previously found that the essential oils (EOs), obta

Proteomic profiling of Juniperus oxycedrus and Cupressus arizonica pollen reveals quantitative interspecies differences in the IgE-binding protein repertoire associated with Mediterranean Cupressaceae allergy.

BACKGROUND: Diagnosis and allergen-specific immunotherapy for Mediterranean allergy rely on extracts standardized to group-1 allergens, such as Cup a 1 from Cupressus arizonica, potentially overlooking interspecies variability. The native species Juniperus oxycedrus, widespread in Spain, may contribute to sensitization, but its clinical relevance and allergen repertoire remain poorly characterized. OBJECTIVE: To characterize and compare the allergen and IgE-binding protein composition of J. oxycedrus and C. arizonica pollen extracts and assess their sensitizing relevance in Spain. METHODS: P

Flammability of Two Mediterranean Mixed Forests: Study of the Non-additive Effect of Fuel Mixtures in Laboratory.

In the Mediterranean region, wildfires are a major disturbance, determined by ecosystem and forest species characteristics. Both the flammability and resistance to fire of a mixed forest may vary from those of the individual species. Two mixed Mediterranean woodlands, a Cupressus sempervirens and Quercus ilex stand in Italy; and a Juniperus thurifera and Quercus faginea stand in Spain were investigated. Laboratory flammability tests were conducted on live foliage, litter samples and on litter beds from individual and mixed species to evaluate: (i) the flammability traits of the mixtures of liv
