Light output from six battery operated dental curing lights.

Light Curing Units (LCUs) are used daily in almost every dental office to photocure resins, but because the light is so bright, the user is unable to tell visually if there are any differences between different LCUs. This study evaluated the light output from six dental LCUs: Elipar Deep Cure-S (3M ESPE), Bluephase G2 (Ivoclar Vivadent), Translux 2Wave (Heraeus Kulzer), Optilight Prime (Gnatus), Slim Blast (First Medica) and Led.B (Guilin Woodpecker) with a fully charged battery, after 50, and again after 100, 20second light exposures. For each situation, the radiant power was measured 10 time

Evaluating microbial load on dental curing lights and the impact of protective barriers on resin composites.

The contamination of dental curing light tips was evaluated before and after treatment and after their use and disinfection. The influence of a plastic protective barrier over the flexural strength and the modulus of elasticity of resin composites were also analyzed. Microbiological sampling was conducted at initial contamination (T0), in Log 10 CFU/4 mL; after dental treatment (T1); and after disinfection with 70% ethanol (v/v) (T2). The results were analyzed by descriptive statistics and analysis of variance. The flexural strength and the modulus of elasticity analyses were performed using b

The dental curing light: A potential health risk.

Powerful blue-light emitting dental curing lights are used in dental offices to photocure resins in the mouth. In addition, many dental personnel use magnification loupes. This study measured the effect of magnification loupes on the "blue light hazard" when the light from a dental curing light was reflected off a human tooth. Loupes with 3.5x magnification (Design for Vision, Carl Zeiss, and Quality Aspirator) and 2.5x magnification (Design for Vision and Quality Aspirator) were placed at the entrance of an integrating sphere connected to a spectrometer (USB 4000, Ocean Optics). A model with

Influence of intervening media and thickness on transmitted irradiance from a dental light-curing unit.

BACKGROUND: Light-activated and dual-cure resin systems require sufficient transmitted irradiance for adequate polymerization. During cementation, saliva, blood, or oxygen-inhibiting agents may be interposed between the curing light and the restorative material. This in vitro study evaluated the influence of intervening media type and thickness on transmitted irradiance from a dental light-curing unit. METHODS: Four intervening media were evaluated: artificial saliva, deionized water, an oxygen-inhibiting agent (Oxyguard II), and porcine whole blood, at thicknesses of 1, 3, and 6 mm. Cylindri

Composition and characterization of in situ usable light cured dental drug delivery hydrogel system.

Biodegradable polymers are compatible, permeable and nontoxic, thus they can provide a useful tool for drug delivery or tissue engineering. These polymers can form hydrogels, which are suitable vehicles for different types of materials e.g. drugs, bioactive molecules or cells. In the case of dentistry, photopolymerization is an obvious method to obtain in situ useable devices which can provide a more efficient way of tailoring drug release. A hydrogel system was developed based on poly-gamma-glutamic acid that was modified with methacryloyl groups to achieve this purpose. The resulting new rea

Temperature excursions at the pulp-dentin junction during the curing of light-activated dental restorations.

OBJECTIVES: Excessive heat produced during the curing of light-activated dental restorations may injure the dental pulp. The maximum temperature excursion at the pulp-dentin junction provides a means to assess the risk of thermal injury. In this investigation we develop and evaluate a model to simulate temperature increases during light-curing of dental restorations and use it to investigate the influence of several factors on the maximum temperature excursion along the pulp-dentin junction. METHODS: Finite element method modeling, using COMSOL 3.3a, was employed to simulate temperature distr

The light-curing mania.

In the approximately 25 years that dental restorative resins have been cured by light, there has been constant evolution of and improvement in the curing devices and the resins they cure. During the past decade, curing lights have become very effective. Dentists who have functional halogen, fast halogen or PAC lights may wish to compare their current lights with the new generation of LED lights that are dominating the commercial dental advertising at this time. If the new LED lights offer more than the current light they are using, they might consider changing to an LED. If their current light

Beyond the Monomer: Camphorquinone, TPO, and BAPO as Leachates of Light-Cured and 3D-Printed Dental Polymers-Radical Chemistry, Redox Signalling, and the Dose-Realism Gap.

Research on the biological cost of resin-based dental materials has focused almost exclusively on residual methacrylate monomers. The photoinitiators-camphorquinone (CQ) with its amine co-initiator, and the acylphosphine oxides TPO and BAPO-remain partly unconsumed, can elute, and are seldom measured. Vat photopolymerisation, where acylphosphine oxides dominate, makes this omission material. We critically appraise the photochemistry, elution behaviour, molecular stress responses, and exposure data for CQ, TPO, and BAPO, weighted toward orthodontic appliances, and ask whether a margin of safety

Modification of Light-Cured Composition for Permanent Dental Fillings; Mass Stability of New Composites Containing Quinoline and Quinoxaline Derivatives in Solutions Simulating the Oral Cavity Environment.

Billions of patients struggle with dental diseases every year. These mainly comprise caries and related diseases. This results in an extremely high demand for innovative, polymer composite filling materials that meet a number of dental requirements. The aim of the study was to modify the light-cured composition of permanent dental fillings by changing the composition of the liquid organic matrix. New photoinitiators (DQ1-DQ5) based on a quinoline or quinoxaline skeleton and a co-initiator-(phenylthio)acetic acid (PhTAA) were used. In addition, monomers that have been traditionally used in dent

Comparison of product safety data sheet ingredient lists with skin irritants and sensitizers present in a convenience sample of light-curing resins used in additive manufacturing.

Material jetting and vat photopolymerization additive manufacturing (AM) processes use liquid resins to build objects. These resins can contain skin irritants and/or sensitizers but product safety data sheets (SDSs) might not declare all ingredients. We characterized elemental and organic skin irritants and sensitizers present in 39 commercial products; evaluated the influence of resin manufacturer, system, color, and AM process type on the presence of irritants and sensitizers; and compared product SDSs to results. Among all products, analyses identified 23 irritant elements, 54 irritant orga
