Solid mechanics of the torus-margo in conifer intertracheid bordered pits.

Bordered pits of many conifers include a torus-margo structure acting as a valve that prevents air from spreading between tracheids, although the extent of torus deflection as a function of applied pressure is not well known. Models were developed from images of pits in roots and stems of Picea mariana (Mill.) BSP. A computational solid mechanics approach was utilised to determine the extent of torus deflection from pressure applied to the torus and margo. Torus deflection increased in nonlinear fashion with applied pressure. The average pressure required for sealing the pit was 0.894 MPa for

Detection of traces of calcium oxalate druses in fossil leaves of angiosperms and gymnosperms from different sites and geological periods.

Calcium biomineralization in plants occurs in a variety of patterns such as calcium carbonate cystoliths and calcium oxalate (CaOx) crystals and agglomerates in different forms. CaOx druses and prismatic crystals with sizes between 20-100 µm are found in large amounts in the leaves of many extant plants, in angiosperms particularly in dicotyledons. In gymnosperms, large CaOx druses are often found in Cycadales and Ginkgo along the leaf veins, while most conifers contain microcrystals of <10 µm size in the parenchyma. In plant fossils, patterns of calcium biominerals are rarely reported because

Distinct constraints but shared dynamics shape the macroevolution of volatile organic compound chemodiversity.

Complex metabolic systems have evolved across the tree of life, producing remarkable chemodiversity, yet the structure and evolutionary modes underlying this diversity remain poorly understood. Here, we investigate the macroevolution of chemodiversity using a comprehensive dataset of gymnosperm foliage volatile organic compounds (VOCs) collected from the literature. We find that chemodiversity is dominated by a small fraction of "core" compounds. Although few in number, these core VOCs are widespread and abundant. To understand the full picture, we investigate the macroevolution of both high-d

Insight into TPS-d Subfamily: The Evolutionary and Functional Diversity in Gymnosperms.

Gymnosperms represent an ancient lineage with diverse chemical profiles. Their terpenoids constitute a major class notable for substantial structural diversity. Terpene synthases (TPSs) are the driving force of terpene diversity. TPS-d is a gymnosperm-specific TPS subfamily, yet the evolution and functional diversity of TPS-d are still understudied. In this review, we analyze 134 functionally characterized gymnosperm TPSs to elucidate the evolutionary history and functional diversity of the predominant TPS-d subfamily. Phylogenetic analysis revealed substantial lineage-specific expansion and d

Study of the Pollen Grain Metabolome under Deposition of Nitrogen and Phosphorus in Taxus baccata L. and Juniperus communis L.

Nitrogen plays an important role in both quantitative and qualitative aspects of plant reproduction, including pollen grain compounds and seed production. Recent studies have pointed out that pollen grains produced by male plants of T. baccata and J. communis subjected to a long period of fertilizer supplementation have lower in vitro germination ability and higher nitrogen content. To gain molecular insights into these observations, we conducted GC-MS analysis of both species to characterize the metabolomes of dry, mature pollen grains, which allowed for the identification and quantification

Effect of impregnation of activated carbon with chelating polymer on adsorption kinetics of Pb2+.

The effects of polyethyleneimine (PEI) impregnation on the Pb(2+) adsorption kinetics of palm shell-activated carbon and pH profile of bulk solution were investigated. Adsorption data were fitted to four established adsorption kinetics models, namely, pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, Elovich equation and intraparticle diffusion. It was found that PEI impregnation at 16.68 and 29.82 wt% PEI/AC increased the Pb(2+) uptake rate while the opposite was observed for PEI impregnation at 4.76 and 8.41 wt% PEI/AC. The increased uptake rates were due to higher concentration of PEI molecules on t

Steam pretreatment of Douglas-fir wood chips. Can conditions for optimum hemicellulose recovery still provide adequate access for efficient enzymatic hydrolysis?

Douglas-fir sapwood and heartwood were impregnated with SO2 and steam exploded at three severity levels, and the cellulose-rich, water-insoluble component was enzymatically hydrolyzed. The high-severity conditions resulted in near complete solubilization and some degradation of hemicelluloses and a significant improvement in the efficiency of enzymatic digestibility of the cellulose component. At lower severity, some of the hemicellulose remained unhydrolyzed, and the cellulose present in the pretreated solids was not readily hydrolyzed. The medium-severity pretreatment conditions proved to be

Exposing the illegal trade in cycad species (Cycadophyta: Encephalartos) at two traditional medicine markets in South Africa using DNA barcoding.

Species in the cycad genus Encephalartos are listed in CITES Appendix I and as Threatened or Protected Species in terms of South Africa's National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act (NEM:BA) of 2004. Despite regulations, illegal plant harvesting for medicinal trade has continued in South Africa and resulted in declines in cycad populations and even complete loss of sub-populations. Encephalartos is traded at traditional medicine markets in South Africa in the form of bark strips and stem sections; thus, determining the species traded presents a major challenge due to a lack of characte

Life habits and evolutionary biology of new two-winged long-proboscid scorpionflies from mid-Cretaceous Myanmar amber.

Long-proboscid scorpionflies are enigmatic, mid-Mesozoic insects associated with gymnosperm pollination. One major lineage, Aneuretopsychina, consists of four families plus two haustellate clades, Diptera and Siphonaptera. One clade, Pseudopolycentropodidae, from mid-Cretaceous Myanmar amber, contains Parapolycentropus. Here, we newly establish Dualula, assigned to Dualulidae, constituting the fifth lineage. Parapolycentropus and Dualula lineages are small, two-winged, with unique siphonate mouthparts for imbibing pollination drops. A cibarial pump provides siphonal food inflow; in Dualula, th

Seasonal rhinitis in a cat sensitized to Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) pollen.

A cat showing seasonal allergic symptoms of rhinitis was examined for reactivities to Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica, CJ) pollen allergen by intradermal skin test (IDST), Prausnitz-Kustner (P-K) test, and lymphocyte blastogenic response. In IDST for 26 common allergens. the cat showed a positive reaction to CJ pollen allergen. P-K test using CJ pollen allergen also showed a positive reaction, indicating the presence of serum IgE specific to CJ pollen. In the lymphocyte blastogenic response, the stimulation index in the presence of CJ pollen allergen was 2.4. These data suggested that the

Phosphorylation of the transcription factor TgWRKY47 by TgSnRK1 modulates cone enlargement in the gymnosperm Torreya grandis.

Reproduction is essential for seed plant survival, and in gymnosperms, cone enlargement plays a pivotal role in seed production and reproduction. However, the molecular mechanisms regulating cone enlargement after fertilization remain poorly understood. Here, using Torreya grandis, a representative gymnosperm species with persistently low cone enlargement efficiency, we elucidated the molecular regulation of cone enlargement and identified sucrose non-fermenting 1-related protein kinase 1 (TgSnRK1) as a novel negative regulator of this process. TgSnRK1 physically interacted with the WRKY trans

Pantropical tree rings show small effects of drought on stem growth.

Increasing drought pressure under anthropogenic climate change may jeopardize the potential of tropical forests to capture carbon in woody biomass and act as a long-term carbon dioxide sink. To evaluate this risk, we assessed drought impacts in 483 tree-ring chronologies from across the tropics and found an overall modest stem growth decline (2.5% with a 95% confidence interval of 2.2 to 2.7%) during the 10% driest years since 1930. Stem growth declines exceeded 10% in 25% of cases and were larger at hotter and drier sites and for gymnosperms compared with angiosperms. Growth declines generall

Genomic divergence and sex-linked region of Welwitschia mirabilis revealed by whole-genome re-sequencing.

A central goal of population genomics is to unveil the evolutionary forces driving genomic divergence. Although genomic islands have been extensively studied in angiosperms, the patterns of genomic divergence remain poorly understood in gymnosperms. Here, by re-sequencing the whole genome of 130 individuals of Welwitschia mirabilis, we reveal significant genomic differentiation among its geographically close populations. Population genomic analyses suggest that geographical isolation and species characteristics play important roles in triggering and maintaining population divergence. We also i

Comparative transcriptomics reveals conserved infection-associated gene expression in Phytophthora agathidicida across its natural gymnosperm host kauri and the model angiosperm host Nicotiana benthamiana.

Phytophthora species cause many devastating diseases of plants, including those of forest trees. Agathis australis (New Zealand kauri) is an ancient and culturally significant tree species that is susceptible to a lethal root and collar rot caused by Phytophthora agathidicida. Functional characterisation of P. agathidicida virulence factors is limited by difficulties in working with its natural host. The angiosperm Nicotiana benthamiana is widely used as a model plant host for studying plant-pathogen interactions, including P. agathidicida. To help determine whether N. benthamiana is a reliabl

A Survey of Plant Iron Content-A Semi-Systematic Review.

Iron is an essential mineral nutrient for all living organisms, involved in a plurality of biological processes. Its deficit is the cause of the most common form of anemia in the world: iron deficiency anemia (IDA). This paper reviews iron content in various parts of 1228 plant species and its absorption from herbal products, based on data collected from the literature in a semi-systematic manner. Five hundred genera randomly selected from the Angiosperms group, 215 genera from the Pteridophytes groups and all 95 Gymnosperm genera as listed in the Plant List version 1.1 were used as keywords t

New gastroprotective ferruginol derivatives with selective cytotoxicity against gastric cancer cells.

The diterpene ferruginol has shown a strong protective effect in animal gastric ulcer models. In the present work, we report the gastroprotective effect and cytotoxicity of 16 new semisynthetic ester derivatives of ferruginol. The gastroprotective effect of these compounds was assessed with the HCl/EtOH-induced gastric lesions model in mice and the cytotoxicity was measured using MRC-5 fibroblasts, gastric adenocarcinoma (AGS) and liver hepatoma Hep G2 cells. The compounds were tested for a gastroprotective effect at a single oral dose of 20 mg/kg. The best gastroprotective effect was elicited

Gastroprotective effect of the Mapuche crude drug Araucaria araucana resin and its main constituents.

The resin from the tree Araucaria araucana (Araucariaceae) has been used since pre-columbian times by the Mapuche amerindians to treat ulcers. The gastroprotective effect of the resin was assessed in the ethanol-HCl-induced gastric ulcer in mice showing a dose-dependent gastroprotective activity at 100, 200 and 300 mg/kg per os. The main three diterpene constituents of the resin, namely imbricatolic acid, 15-hydroxyimbricatolal and 15-acetoxyimbricatolic acid were isolated and evaluated for gastroprotective effect at doses of 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg. Isolation of the antiulcer compound in essential oil from the leaves of Cryptomeria japonica.

Essential oil from the leaves of Tateyamasugi (Cryptomeria japonica) exhibited strong inhibitory activity on ulceration induced by HCl/ethanol, HCl/aspirin, water-immersion stress and pylorus-ligation. We separated the antiulcer compounds from cedar essential oil by use of distillation and chromatography. As a result, terpinen-4-ol, a monoterpene, and elemol, a sesquiterpene, were isolated as active compounds. The antiulcer activity of the former was more potent than that of the latter. Terpinen-4-ol was a mixture of optical isomers and each possessed potent antiulcer activity. Secretion of ga
