Waterborne Infectious Diseases Associated with Exposure to Tropical Cyclonic Storms, United States, 1996-2018.

In the United States, tropical cyclones cause destructive flooding that can lead to adverse health outcomes. Storm-driven flooding contaminates environmental, recreational, and drinking water sources, but few studies have examined effects on specific infections over time. We used 23 years of exposure and case data to assess the effects of tropical cyclones on 6 waterborne diseases in a conditional quasi-Poisson model. We separately defined storm exposure for windspeed, rainfall, and proximity to the storm track. Exposure to storm-related rainfall was associated with a 48% (95% CI 27%-69%) incr

Enhanced global storm surges by tropical cyclone poleward migration.

Tropical cyclone-induced storm surges pose significant and growing threats to coastal regions; however, their long-term evolution in response to changing tropical cyclone characteristics remains poorly quantified. Here, by conducting a comprehensive global analysis, we find that tropical cyclone-induced storm surge has increased globally by 20% over the period 1982-2024, which is also statistically significant in both hemispheres. Notably, such increases are 28% over the western North Pacific, 38.2% over the eastern Pacific and 31% over the South Pacific, respectively. Through statistical deco

Storm, typhoon, cyclone or hurricane in patients with COVID-19? Beware of the same storm that has a different origin.

Some of the articles being published during the severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus (SARS-CoV)-2 pandemic highlight a link between severe forms of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and the so-called cytokine storm, also with increased ferritin levels. However, this scenario is more complex than initially thought due to the heterogeneity of hyperinflammation. Some patients with coronavirus 2019 disease (COVID-19) develop a fully blown secondary haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (sHLH), whereas others, despite a consistent release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, do not fulfil sHLH c

Extratropical transition pathways of tropical cyclones and their associated storm intensity and destructiveness.

Tropical cyclones (TCs) undergoing extratropical transition (ET) can have widespread impacts; however, the differences in their evolutionary pathways remain incompletely understood. In this study, the cyclone phase space is applied to classify TCs in the western North Pacific from 1979 to 2022 into three distinct types. Type 1 exhibits the most pronounced asymmetry changes and retains the strongest surface winds, whereas Type 2 undergoes more modest asymmetry changes and maintains a weaker wind field. Type 3, in contrast, preserves a relatively symmetric wind field throughout the transition an

The perfect storm: human influence on the loss potential of Eunice-like cyclones.

Storm Eunice was a severe windstorm that impacted Central Europe in February 2022. The meteorology and synoptic dynamics of Eunice have been studied in depth in several studies examining features of the storm such as its sting jet. The contribution of climate change to the storm dynamics and severity was examined in previous work, which found that in counterfactual weather forecasts-given an identical initial synoptic setup-climate change had measurably increased the severity of the storm. Here we move beyond meteorological attribution and quantify the role of climate change in the insured los

An annually resolved 5700-year storm archive reveals drivers of Caribbean cyclone frequency.

Predictions of tropical cyclone (TC) frequencies are hampered by insufficient knowledge of their natural variability in the past. A 30-m-long sediment core from the Great Blue Hole, a marine sinkhole offshore Belize, provides the longest available, continuous, and annually resolved TC-frequency record. This record expands our understanding, derived from instrumental monitoring (73 years), historical documentations (173 years), and paleotempestological records (2000 years), to the past 5700 years. A total of 694 event layers were identified. They display a distinct regional trend of increasing

Tropical cyclone-driven storm surge and wave database for the US North Atlantic and Gulf coastlines.

Historical datasets of tropical cyclone-driven storm surge and waves at moderate coastal resolution are scarce, limiting coastal hazard analysis and AI/ML-based surrogate model development where field observations remain sparse. We present a publicly available hindcast database of surge and wave conditions for 232 U.S. landfalling and impactful storms (1981-2021). We applied the coupled ADCIRC+SWAN system across the entire U.S. North Atlantic and Gulf coastline on a coastal-refined unstructured mesh achieving practical nearshore resolution (~100 - 500 m) for computational feasibility. We force

Physics-based data augmentation to enhance deep learning performance in tropical cyclone and storm surge modelling.

Accurate modelling of tropical cyclones (TCs) is essential for reliable storm surge simulations, as TCs provide the primary external forcing. While deep learning models have demonstrated effectiveness in TC modelling, a challenge remains regarding the limited diversity of TCs in reanalysis data used for training-specifically, the scarcity of extreme TC events. This study proposes a physics-based data augmentation method that utilizes a numerical weather prediction (NWP) model to physically generate TCs lying beyond the range of reanalysis data. Subsequently, focusing on small-sized yet intense

Human capital as a turnkey resource in resilience to cyclones and storm surges: Empirical evidence from coastal Bangladesh.

What are the best methods to build cyclone and storm resilience in a developing country? We examine the multiple resources that contribute to storm resilience in the highly vulnerable ecological context of coastal Bangladesh, finding that human capital is a critical turnkey resource that enables and facilitates the use of other resources in household responses to floods, storm surges and other cyclone damage. Drawing on a household survey of nine coastal villages in different ecological zones of coastal Bangladesh, we use principal component analysis (PCA) and multiple regression to identify f

Phosphorus transitions driven by cyclone biparjoy linked middle east North Africa (MENA) and Indian Thar Desert dust storm pathways in Asia's largest grassland.

Phosphorus (P) is an important nutrient for terrestrial ecosystems like grassland and plays a critical role in influencing primary productivity and hence ecosystem dynamics. The deposition of airborne dust, particularly from arid and semiarid regions, has been recognised as a significant source of phosphorus input in distant ecosystems. The study area, the Banni grassland, is a semiarid ecosystem with a unique geological history that has experienced degradation for various natural and anthropogenic reasons. It is located in the arid tract of western India. Soil samples were collected from 10 ×

Tropical Cyclone Exposures and Risks of Emergency Medicare Hospital Admission for Cardiorespiratory Diseases in 175 Urban United States Counties, 1999-2010.

BACKGROUND: Although injuries experienced during hurricanes and other tropical cyclones have been relatively well-characterized through traditional surveillance, less is known about tropical cyclones' impacts on noninjury morbidity, which can be triggered through pathways that include psychosocial stress or interruption in medical treatment. METHODS: We investigated daily emergency Medicare hospitalizations (1999-2010) in 180 US counties, drawing on an existing cohort of high-population counties. We classified counties as exposed to tropical cyclones when storm-associated peak sustained winds

How wildlife respond to tropical cyclones: short-term tactics and long-term impacts.

From butterflies to lizards and from sharks to seabirds, wildlife exhibit tactics to survive the impacts of tropical cyclones, also known as hurricanes, cyclones, or typhoons depending on where they occur. Some species seek refuge during the storm by moving, some remain in place and ride it out, and others move longer distances, avoiding the main impacts of the storm altogether. Tropical cyclones can have direct impacts on wildlife (e.g. mortality) but can also have indirect effects by altering resources and habitat, with downstream impacts on abundance and recruitment. Using examples from acr

Tropical cyclone impacts on seagrass-associated fishes in a temperate-subtropical estuary.

Major storms can alter coastal ecosystems in several direct and indirect ways including habitat destruction, stormwater-related water quality degradation, and organism mortality. From 2010-2020, ten tropical cyclones impacted coastal North Carolina, providing an opportunity to explore ecosystem responses across multiple storms. Using monthly trawl and contemporaneous seagrass surveys conducted in Back Sound, NC, we evaluated how cyclones may affect the nursery role of shallow-water biogenic habitats by examining seagrass-associated fish responses within a temperate-subtropical estuary. We empl

Disturbance intensification is altering the trait composition of Caribbean reefs, locking them into a low functioning state.

Anthropogenic climate change is intensifying natural disturbance regimes, which negatively affects some species, while benefiting others. This could alter the trait composition of ecological communities and influence resilience to disturbance. We investigated how the frequency and intensification of the regional storm regime (and likely other disturbances) is altering coral species composition and in turn resistance and recovery. We developed regional databases of coral cover and composition (3144 reef locations from 1970 to 2017) and of the path and strength of cyclonic storms in the region (

Global tropical cyclone extreme wave height climatology.

A global study of extreme value (1 in 100-year return period) tropical cyclone generated waves is conducted across all tropical cyclone basins. The study uses a 1000 year tropical cyclone synthetic track database to force a validated parametric wave model. The resulting distributions of extreme significant wave height show that values in the North Atlantic and Western Pacific basins are the largest globally. This is partly due to the relative intensities and frequencies of occurrence of storms in these basins but also because the typical velocities of forward movement of storms are larger and

The intensification of the strongest nor'easters.

Nor'easters are coastal extratropical cyclones that feed upon both thermal contrasts (meridional and land-ocean) and oceanic latent heat release, causing them to intensify along the U.S. East Coast. With central pressures that sometimes rival those of tropical cyclones, they represent a significant coastal hazard and are often associated with strong winds, heavy snowfall, disruption, and damage. While interest in studying the impacts of climate change on storm behavior is growing, nor'easters have historically received far less attention than tropical cyclones, largely due to challenges in doc
