Bothriocephalus acheilognathi (Cestoda) in the endangered fish Profundulus hildebrandi (Cyprinodontiformes), Mexico.

The Asian fish tapeworm, Bothriocephalus acheilognathi, has been considered one of the most dangerous parasites for cultured carp and a risk for native freshwater fish populations worldwide. This cestode is highly pathogenic for fishes especially fry. In this paper we record B. acheilognathi parasitizing the endangered and endemic freshwater fish Profundulus hildebrandi from the endorheic basin of San Crist6bal de las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico. B. acheilognathi was recorded from 10 of the 11 sampled localities, with high values of prevalence (> 60%) and mean abundance (> 4.50). The infection was

Yellow grub diseases on two seasonal killifish (Cyprinodontiformes, Rivulidae): a histopathological study.

Yellow grub disease is a parasite infection, caused by Clinostomum spp. Metacercariae and affecting axial muscles and internal organs of freshwater fish. Killifishes live in seasonal ponds and are short-lived; in the Neotropical region they are among the most vulnerable vertebrates. The current study analyzes the possible injury and inflammatory reaction caused by parasitic infection with Clinostomum spp. metacercariae in testes, ovaries, liver, intestine and mesentery in the seasonal killifishes Trigonectes aplocheiloides and Titanolebias monstrosus. Apparently, this parasite could migrate th

Embryonic and larval development of the endangered Chiapas killifish Tlaloc hildebrandi (Cyprinodontiformes: Profundulidae).

The early ontogeny of endemic freshwater fishes provides essential baseline biological information for conservation and management, particularly in species with restricted distributions and high vulnerability to habitat degradation, environmental change and population decline. This study presents the first detailed description of embryonic and larval development of Tlaloc hildebrandi, an endangered (EN) killifish endemic to Chiapas, Mexico. Ontogenetic development was documented under controlled conditions from fertilisation to the completion of the larval period and the establishment of juven

First report of Saccocoelioides nanii (Digenea: Haploporidae) infecting an extremophile host, Jenynsia sulfurica (Cyprinodontiformes: Anablepidae).

A species of Saccocoelioides (Haploporidae) is reported from the intestine of the livebearer fish Jenynsia sulfurica (Anablepidae), which inhabits an extremophile environment in northwestern Argentina. This host species lives in a sulfide-rich thermal stream characterized by several extreme environmental conditions, including high temperatures, low oxygen levels, moderate pH, and elevated total dissolved solids. Morphological and molecular analyses indicate that the parasite under study is consistent with Saccocoelioides nanii. Morphological comparisons revealed minor variations in body size a

Short communication: first report of nematodes parasitizing the four-eyed-fish, Anableps anableps (Pisces, Cyprinodontiformes).

The genus Anableps is composed of species Anableps anableps, Anableps dowi, and Anableps microlepis. These fishes are tropical and usually live on the surface of brackish water, being popularly known as four-eyed-fishes due to the presence of prominent eyes and a pupil split horizontally. A. anableps and A. microlepis are considered as sister species that live in sympatry in South America. A. dowi, however, is restricted to the Pacific Ocean (Central America) and is considered the most primitive species of this genus. The aims of this study were to investigate the presence of endoparasites in

Histological observation of the reproductive system in a viviparous teleost Xenotoca eiseni Rutter 1896 (Cyprinodontiformes: Goodeidae).

Xenotoca eiseni is a viviparous teleost belonging to the family Goodeidae. Here, we report histological observations of the reproductive organs in an adult male, an adult female, a pregnant female with intraovarian embryo and an extracted embryo of X. eiseni. High-resolution images of haematoxylin-eosin-stained sagittal sections revealed the detailed structure of gonads, gametes and reproductive components of the mother-embryo relationship. In the male, mature spermatozoa in the epididymis formed sperm packages. In the female, oogenesis proceeded asynchronously in the ovarian wall, and various

The complete genome sequence of the protogynous hermaphrodite North American annual killifish Millerichthys robustus (Rivulidae, Cyprinodontiformes).

The Mexican Rivulus, Millerichthys robustus, is an enigmatic species of seasonal killifish endemic of the Southeast Mexico that has changed paradigms on the evolution of annualism in killifishes. This species survives in ephemeral environments that experience a period of seasonal drought that causes the death of all adult fish. However, populations persist due to their drought-resistant embryos capable of arresting their development in diapause until the next the rainy season. Millerichthys evolved unique characteristics within annual killifishes as a functional sequential hermaphroditism, in

Sharply Angled Lateral Curvature Modification in Anal Fin of a Viviparous Fish, Xenotoca variata (Cyprinodontiformes: Goodeidae).

Almost all viviparous species possess male external genitalia; for example, the mammalian penis is an intromittent organ. Some live-bearing bony fish use their anal fins to assist in mating and internal fertilization. We previously reported a male-specific asymmetric curvature at the posterior end of the anal fin in Xenotoca eiseni, a viviparous fish of the family Goodeidae. However, three other goodeid species, Xenotoca melanosoma, Zoogoneticus quitzeoensis, and Chapalichthys pardalis, examined in that study possessed lesser anal fin curvature modifications as compared to those in the anal fi

Morphological and genetic analysis of a rediscovered Clinostomum sp. parasitising Titanolebias monstrosus and Trigonectes aplocheiloides (Cyprinodontiformes: Rivulidae).

Clinostomids are a group of digeneans in which substantial diversity has been recently discovered, with some metacercariae specific to their fish hosts. Genetic analysis has been instrumental in elucidating species diversity within this genus. Recently, seven COI lineages were reported in Argentina, along with three metacercarial morphotypes lacking molecular data. Two of these were found parasitising Rivulidae fishes. The discovery of Clinostomum metacercariae in Trigonectes aplocheiloides and Titanolebias monstrosus from temporary ponds in the western Chacoan region allowed us to redescribe

An integrative taxonomic characterization of extremophile fish Aphanius almiriensis (Teleostei: Cyprinodontiformes) in a hypersaline geothermal system (NW Anatolia).

The small killifish Aphanius almiriensis (Kottelat, Barbieri & Stoumboudi, 2007) inhabits from brackish springs to estuaries and coastal lagoons in the eastern Mediterranean basin. This study focused on the detailed characterization of Aphanius almiriensis from a hypersaline geothermal spring (Tuzla, Çanakkale, NW Anatolia), where extreme salinity (61.14 ppt in winter, January 2023) and temperature (42.7°C in summer, July 2023) conditions were observed. The obtained specimens of killifish in the sampling site, with a slightly convex dorsal head profile and a more angular ventral head profile,

Seawater incubated embryos of a freshwater Aplocheilus lineatus (Aplocheilidae; Cyprinodontiformes) support the dispersal hypothesis of killifish intercontinental distribution.

BACKGROUND: Aplocheiloid killifishes (Cyprinodontiformes, Aplocheiloidei) inhabiting Africa, America, and South Asia are unique in that embryos of annual species are capable of entering a state of diapause and becoming extremely stress resistant. Distribution of aplocheiloids is a biogeographical enigma: how freshwater fish managed to cross long-distance oceanic barriers to become intercontinentally distributed? As a hypothesis, we proposed their embryos to be a dispersal stage. To test it, we compared embryonal development in seawater and freshwater incubated eggs of Aplocheilus lineatus from

Larval parasite occurrence in two killifish species, Argolebias guarani and Argolebias adrianae (Cyprinodontiformes: Rivulidae) inhabiting two ephemeral ponds.

Ephemeral ponds provide unique opportunities to study host-parasite interactions under contrasting environmental conditions. We assessed the occurrence of larval parasites in two closely related rivulid fishes, Argolebias guarani and Argolebias adrianae, inhabiting geographically proximate but hydrologically isolated ponds. A total of 121 individuals of A. guarani and 30 of A. adrianae were examined. Parasites were recorded only in A. guarani, including a nematomorph larva, a proteocephalidean metacestode, a telorchiid metacercaria, and a diplostomid metacercaria, whereas A. adrianae showed no

Saccocoelioides kirchneri n. sp. (Digenea: Haploporidae) from the killifish Cnesterodon decemmaculatus (Cyprinodontiformes: Poeciliidae) from Argentina, morphological and molecular description.

This paper presents a new haploporid digenean that expands the number of species of Saccoccoelioides to 27. The new species, Saccocoelioides kirchneri n. sp. was collected from the intestine of Cnesterodon decemmaculatus (Poeciliidae: Cyprinodontiformes) from Lago del Bosque, La Plata, Argentina. The new species possesses the diagnostic features for Saccocoelioides: a sac like ceca; the vitellarium confined in two irregular groups of follicles distributed between the ventral sucker and the anterior margin of the testis; and a uterus confined largely in the hind-body, but encroaching into the r

Genetic Structure of the Mangrove Killifish Kryptolebias hermaphroditus Costa, 2011 (Cyprinodontiformes: Aplocheiloidei) Supports A Wide Connection among its Populations.

The Kryptolebias marmoratus species group is composed of the only three vertebrate species that lack females. These species present only males and simultaneously hermaphroditic individuals; that are able to reproduce by allogamy, with males, or by autogamy, performing self-fertilization and generating clones of themselves. The proportion of males is variable among those species and even among their populations. Kryptolebias hermaphroditus has the smallest proportion of males. Indeed, no males have been recorded in most known populations. This is a mainly autogamous species, with small populati

Gyrodactylidae from Fundulus heteroclitus (Fundulidae, Cyprinodontiformes) in South Carolina, USA, and insights on the historical ecology of the gyrodactylids of Fundulidae.

Mummichog (Fundulus heteroclitus) hosts a diverse array of parasites, including several species of Gyrodactylidae. We surveyed populations of mummichogs across three estuarine systems in South Carolina, USA, for gyrodactylids and studied their taxonomy, phylogenetics, and evolutionary history. Molecular analysis using concatenated sequences of 18S, ITS, and 5.8S rDNA fragments and morphology support the synonymization of Fundulotrema with Swingleus, as the former was shown paraphyletic. Five species of Gyrodactylidae were encountered. Gyrodactylus kritskyi n. sp. is described and four other sp

Molecular phylogenetics of Andean killifish genus Orestias (Cyprinodontiformes: Orestiidae) with emphasis on the O. agassii species complex, a widespread Andean clade.

This study presents the most comprehensive phylogenetic analysis to date of the high-Andean fish genus Orestias, a diverse and largely endemic group, using Genotype-by-Sequencing (GBS) and extensive sampling across the full range of the genus, from northern Peru to northern Chile. In particular, the evolutionary relationships and population structure within the O. agassii species complex were reconstructed. Phylogenetic analyses consistently recovered three major clades: a newly identified Northern clade, the Lake Titicaca radiation, and the O. agassii species complex. The genus originated aro

Description of Ellipsomyxa prima n. sp. in the gallbladder of Gambusia yucatana (Cyprinodontiformes: Poeciliidae) from freshwater springs in the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico.

The Celestún Lagoon is located on the coast of the Yucatán Peninsula in southern Mexico. The peripheral margins of the lagoon are exposed to a constant influx of water from freshwater springs, where a wide diversity of freshwater fishes occurs. Simultaneously, these freshwater springs are mixing with marine water from the sea and brackish water from the lagoon. Gambusia yucatana is an endemic poeciliid freshwater fish of this coastal region, with no current parasitological records. In December 2023, 24 specimens from two freshwater springs near the Celestún Lagoon were examined for myxozoan in
