Bladder injury is a common complication of hysterectomy that is often not recognized at the initial surgery. The conventional approach to intraperitoneal cystotomy is surgical repair. The goal of this case series was to introduce an alternative conservative treatment of posthysterectomy cystotomy. We present 3 cases of posthysterectomy cystotomy that were unrecognized at the initial surgery and were treated with assisted bladder drainage. The treatment of iatrogenic intraperitoneal cystotomy with bladder drainage facilitated complete healing and eliminated the need for surgical repair. We sugg

Knowledge of the regional anatomy and healing characteristics of the urinary bladder are crucial to successful surgical intervention in common disorders of the bladder. Innervation and blood supply enter the neck region of the bladder on the dorsal surface. Surgical approach to the bladder is via a ventral midline incision. Cystotomy is most commonly performed on the ventral surface of the bladder and the incision is closed using absorbable suture material in a single-layer, appositional closure. Removal of urinary calculi is the most common indication for cystotomy and should be accompanied b

PURPOSE: We assessed the laparoscopic closure of intentional or unintentional bladder lacerations during operative laparoscopy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective review of operative reports revealed 19 women who required bladder repair. The defect was repaired laparoscopically in 1 layer using interrupted absorbable polyglycolic suture (17 patients) or polydioxanone suture (2) and followed by 7 to 14 days of transurethral drainage.
RESULTS: Complications were limited to 1 vesicovaginal fistula that required reoperation. After 6 to 48 months of followup all patients were well with a good o

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effects of cessation of continuous bladder drainage after short-term catheterization in women who had extraperitoneal cystotomies.
METHODS: The study population included 84 women, 78 of whom had retropubic urethropexies and six of whom had retropubic paravaginal repairs. Intentional cystotomy was done intraoperatively to assure ureteral patency, bladder integrity, and no inadvertent suture penetration into the bladder. All cystotomies were closed in two layers with 3-0 chromic suture. Suprapubic catheters were placed intraoperatively in all cases. In all women except

BACKGROUND: Difficult laparoscopic entry with preperitoneal dissection may disrupt the bladder wall without intraperitoneal or transvaginal evidence of injury. A high index of suspicion must be maintained.
CASE: A laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy was performed on a 136-kg, 43-year-old nullipara with a fibroid uterus and pelvic endometriosis. Open laparoscopic entry was impeded by a distorted abdominal wall, necessitating infraumbilical, extraperitoneal laparoscopic dissection. Following an uncomplicated laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy, gross hematuria was evident.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine if the location of a repaired bladder injury (trigone vs dome) impacts the probability of an abnormal cystography result in obstetric/gynecologic surgical patients undergoing repair of an unanticipated cystotomy.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of adult obstetric and gynecologic surgical patients who underwent cystographic evaluation of bladder integrity after repair of iatrogenic cystotomy at a single institution between January 2006 and July 2018. We excluded patients who had undergone repair of genitourinary fistula or urethral diverti

We evaluated the outcome of laparoscopic closure of intentional or unintentional bladder openings during operative laparoscopy. The unintentional cystotomies occurred in six women during ancillary suprapubic cannula insertion (1), sharp dissection of the bladder from the uterus in preparation for hysterectomy (2), development of the space of Retzius for bladder neck suspension (1), myomectomy (1), and resection of an ovarian remnant (1). In the remaining 13 women, bladder entry was required for treatment of endometriosis (3), and full-thickness partial cystectomy was necessary for deeply infil

Feline lower urinary tract diseases are known to be life threatening conditions in cats, especially when they occur as obstructive diseases in males. Early diagnosis and treatment is necessary, otherwise it may lead to death. A 3-year-old male Persian cat was referred to the clinic with a history of anuria, lethargy, loss of appetite and exploratory cystotomy 6 months ago due to urethral obstruction following urolithiasis. Urinary bladder was enlarged and painful on palpation and urine accumulation was observed in ultrasonography. Biochemical and hematological analyses revealed hypocalcemia, h

Optimal resection of pelvic tumor was facilitated by cystotomy in one patient with a benign and five patients with malignant adherent pelvic tumors. Four of the five patients with malignant tumors had recurrent or persistent carcinoma of the ovary. Blood loss and surgical duration were acceptable and there were no postoperative complications. Cystotomy is a relatively easy and safe procedure and is recommended when optimal resection of adherent pelvic tumor is attempted.

PURPOSE: Pulmonary parenchyma saving method (cystotomy and enucleation) has been globally accepted in lung hydatidosis. However, whether capitonnage is performed or not after cystotomy is still controversial. This study aims to improve the diagnosis and treatment of patients.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the data of 12 pediatric patients with pulmonary hydatid cysts. These 12 patients (10 males and 2 females), with an average age of 8.7 years, underwent cystotomy without capitonnage. The mean follow-up period was 36 months.
RESULTS: Among the 12 patients, 10 underwent thoracotomy cys

A 35 years old man presented with retention of urine secondary to meatal stenosis with bulbar urethral stricture. He had a distended, palpable, tender urinary bladder. Urethral catheterization and dilatation was tried but failed. A trocar cystostomy was performed under local anaesthesia, which led to the injury to the small bowel when least expected. This is a rare but well recognized complication of small bowel injury following blind trocar suprapubic cystostomy when it was least expected and as such had a significant bearing on its management. We discuss its subsequent management and possibl

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to histologically chronicle wound healing following cystotomy repair using a small animal model.
METHODS: Thirty female Sprague-Dawley rats were included in this study. Twenty-eight rats underwent a vertical cystotomy in the bladder dome, which was repaired in a single continuous fashion. Two rats served as histological controls. Following cystotomy repair, groups of three to four rats were studied at single day intervals for 4 days, then at 2-day intervals until 10 days post-repair. The animal bladders were harvested and examined for

OBJECTIVE: To report laparoscopic-assisted cystotomy and inguinal cystostomy for treating bladder urolithiasis in a gelding.
STUDY DESIGN: Clinical report.
ANIMALS: Twelve-year-old Appaloosa gelding.
METHODS: A laparoscopic approach was used to locate and grasp the bladder, which was exteriorized through an enlarged instrument portal for cystotomy to remove the calculus. During withdrawal, the calculus fragmented into multiple pieces. To avoid urethral occlusion and facilitate elimination of these fragments, an inguinal cystostomy was created. The seromuscular layer of the bladder was circu

The use of simulators in veterinary education has been increasing over the last few years. This is fundamental for surgical classes, as simulators can provide a better learning environment for the students. Two procedures commonly taught in veterinary surgical practical classes are nephrectomy and cystotomy. However, the lack of simulators for use in these classes limits the training options to the use of cadavers, which have a number of associated disadvantages, including the potential for autolysis. The aim of this study was to develop and assess the value of a simple nephrectomy and cystoto

CASE DESCRIPTION: An 8-year-old spayed female Yorkshire Terrier-Poodle dog was evaluated for persistent pollakiuria and stranguria following routine cystotomy for calcium oxalate cystoliths.
CLINICAL FINDINGS: The dog presented for a cystotomy with intermittent hematuria. Postoperative radiographs revealed no remaining cystoliths. Urine, cystolith, and bladder mucosal aerobic cultures were negative. Pollakiuria, stranguria, and hematuria developed immediately after surgery and persisted despite antibiotics. Ultrasound revealed suspected fibrous adhesions within the urinary bladder lumen conne
