This chromatographic procedure uses DEAE-cellulose as ion exchanger and glycine-KCN-NaC1 solutions as developers. Blood samples from several adults and newborn infants with alpha, beta, delta, or gamma chains variants have been analysed. The hemoglobins are eluted as compact and symmetrical zones, and the separation of many hemoglobin types is greatly improved. The procedure is relatively fast, simple, and inexpensive.

A method is described whereby small numbers of trypanosomes in blood can be concentrated free of blood cells on to a slide. Infected blood is passed through a column of DEAE-cellulose, which adsorbs the blood cells, and the organisms are separated from the eluate by centrifugation. By this technique trypanosomes were detected in 24% of 41 Nigerian patients with suspected Gambian trypanosomiasis, but whose cervical lymph glands were not infected; of these, only 5% were positive in thick blood films. Treatment of human serum with DEAE-cellulose in acid conditions almost completely removed alpha 1-acid glycoprotein (alpha 1-AG) with little change in the concentration of albumin and beta-lipoprotein, while treatment with sulphosalicylic acid removed almost all the proteins except alpha 1-AG. The hexose, hexosamine, and sialic acid contents rose over the first 2-4 days after admission to the hospital, continued at high levels for 5-8 hospital days, and fell to low levels after 9 hospital days. The affinity of a glycopeptide from culture filtrates of Mycobacterium tuberculosis for guinea-pig serum components, first observed as an alteration of electrophoretic mobility of γ2-immunoglobulin in agar has been explored by a variety of techniques. It was shown that such changes in mobility were produced more readily with γ2-globulin (Fraction I from DEAE cellulose chromatography) than with γ1-globulin (Fraction III from DEAE cellulose chromatography). It was estimated that the treatment resulted in a rise of carbohydrate associated with γ2-globulin from 1.3 per cent to 38–40 per cent.

Iduronate 2-sulphate sulphatase (EC 3.1.6.-) was found in human placenta in three forms which could be separated by elution from DEAE-cellulose using an NaCl gradient. Red blood cell lysates were applied to DEAE cellulose paper for detection of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase. Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PD) was separated from 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (6-PGD) by DEAE-cellulose paper-chromatography and their activities were detected on the chromatogram by applying the reaction mixture. The fluorescence of NADPH formed by G-6-PD was not interfered with by 6-PGD activity. This is a sensitive procedure which detects slight loss of G-6-PD in red blood cells and could be applied to the detection of G-6-PD deficiency.
