Diethyltoluamide (DEET) insect repellent toxicosis.

Poisonings resulting from DEET are rarely encountered in companion animals. In human patients, DEET toxicosis has been associated with the development of a toxic encephalopathy characterized by tremors, seizures, behavioral changes, and abnormal movements. Generally, DEET toxicosis in companion animals is of short duration and is characterized by vomiting, tremors, ataxia, and excitation. Treatment for DEET toxicosis includes symptomatic therapy and decontamination.

Multiple channels of DEET repellency in Drosophila.

BACKGROUND: N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET) is the prophylactic insect repellent used most widely to inhibit insect bites. Despite its use since 1944, the mechanism of DEET repellency remains controversial. Here, we revisited the role of smell and taste in DEET repellence using Drosophila as a model. RESULTS: Analysis of the responses of individual olfactory receptor neuron (ORN) classes to DEET reveals that 11 ORNs are activated and two are inhibited by this compound. Blocking individual ORN classes in the antenna does not block DEET repellence. This argues against the existence of a singl

Efficacy of DEET and non-DEET-based insect repellents against bites of Simulium damnosum vectors of onchocerciasis.

Coping strategies including smoke screens are used against nuisance bites of Simulium damnosum Theobald (Diptera:Simuliidae) in onchocerciasis endemic communities. To find more effective alternatives, the efficacy of commercially available N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide (DEET) products with active concentrations of 9.5, 13, 25, 50 and 98.1-100% and 'NO MAS,' (active component: para-menthane-3,8-diol and lemon grass oil) were tested at Bui-Agblekame, Ghana. A Latin square study design was implemented using eight groups of two vector collectors each, who used repellents (treatment), mineral oil o

DEET Metabolite and Hearing Loss in United States Adults.

Hearing loss (HL) causes numerous challenges for individuals. N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET) is a common ingredient in insect repellants and some sunscreens. M-(diethylcarbamoyl) benzoic acid (DCBA) is a DEET metabolite measured in the urine of National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey participants. This study examines potential associations between HL and urinary DCBA in U.S. adults. Speech-frequency hearing loss (SFHL) was defined as an average hearing threshold above 25 dB across four frequencies (0.5, 1, 2, and 4 kHz). In comparison, high-frequency hearing loss (HFHL) was based o

Biomonitoring Equivalents for N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET).

N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET) is widely used as an effective mosquito and tick repellent. DEET is absorbed systemically after applications to skin. Once absorbed, DEET is rapidly metabolized with the predominant metabolite being m-dimethylaminocarbonyl benzoic acid (DBA). DEET and metabolites are predominantly excreted in urine after being absorbed systemically. Exposures to DEET are typically biomonitored via measures of DEET and DBA in urine. In this evaluation, we review available health-based risk assessments and toxicological reference values (TRVs) for DEET and derive Biomonitoring E

DEET: a review and update of safety and risk in the general population.

The emergence of West Nile Virus (WNV) in North America has resulted in increased public awareness and utilization of insect repellents containing N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET) in the prevention of mosquito-borne disease. Regulatory reassessments in North American countries have recently been completed for insect repellents containing DEET as active ingredient, resulting in labeling changes intended to minimize unnecessary exposure to special populations, including children. This article describes those changes, and summarizes more recent data relating to the pharmacokinetics, toxicology, and

Insect repellents and contact urticaria: differential response to DEET and picaridin.

Topical insect repellent is commonly used throughout the world. Active ingredients typically include N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET) or picaridin. Reactions to topical repellents have ranged from contact dermatitis to urticaria. Exposure to DEET can produce contact urticaria; however, it is unknown if patients with a sensitivity to DEET can tolerate picaridin. We report the case of a 22-year-old man who presented for evaluation of contact urticaria that had developed immediately after the application of insect repellent and contact with individuals who had used DEET-containing repellents. No

Repellent efficacy of DEET and KBR 3023 against Amblyomma hebraeum (Acari: Ixodidae).

The bont tick, Amblyomma hebraeum Koch, is the principal vector of Rickettsia africae, the agent of African tick bite fever, in southern Africa. In contrast to most other hard ticks, members of the genus Amblyomma exhibit a characteristic attack host-seeking behavior. The efficacy of topically applied 20% lotions of DEET (diethyl-3-methylbenzamide), the currently considered reference repellent substance, and KBR 3023, a recently developed piperidine compound, was evaluated against laboratory-reared A. hebraeum nymphs on treated fingers. Both substances repelled >85% of nymph attacks at 0 and 1

DEET-based insect repellents: safety implications for children and pregnant and lactating women.

Reducing the risk of mosquito bites is currently the only way to reduce the risk of West Nile virus infection. Methods for avoiding mosquito bites include limiting the time spent outdoors at dawn and dusk, wearing protective clothing and using an insect repellent. Repellents containing DEET (N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide, also known as N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide) are the most effective and most widely used. However, concerns have been raised over the risk of adverse toxic effects, especially in young children and pregnant and lactating women. In this article, we review the available evidence on t

Impact of N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET) and Citronella on Skin Barrier Function.

BACKGROUND: Skin barrier function is crucial for maintaining homeostasis by protecting the body against external aggressors. Despite the widespread use of insect repellents, their effects on skin homeostasis remain insufficiently studied. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of insect repellents on skin barrier function. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted to measure skin parameters on the volar forearm after the application of water as a control, a plant-based repellent containing citronella, and a synthetic repellent containing DEET. RESULTS: A total of 52 individuals partici

Cellular and molecular mechanisms of DEET toxicity and disease-carrying insect vectors: a review.

BACKGROUND: Several insects such as mosquitoes, flies, ticks, fleas, lice, and mites are known to serve as vectors for a vast number of pathogens. Many such vectors are hematophagous, and therefore introduce pathogens directly into the host's bloodstream. Importantly, the capacity of these vectors to spread disease can lead to serious global health crises. Furthermore, crop damage can be exacerbated by pathogen infection and increased insect foraging due to recent global warming. METHODS: Our study categorized insect-associated damage into three groups: animal infection, plant infection, and

Evaluation of the chronic toxicity and oncogenicity of N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET).

Chronic toxicity and/or oncogenicity studies were conducted in rats, mice, and dogs with the insect repellent DEET. DEET was mixed in the diet and administered to CD rats for two years at concentrations that corresponded to dosage levels of 10, 30 or 100 mg/kg/day for males and 30, 100, or 400 mg/kg/day for females; to CD-1 mice for 18 months at dosage levels of 250, 500, or 1000 mg/kg/day; and to dogs for one year, via gelatin capsules, at dosage levels of 30, 100, or 400 mg/kg/day. Transcriptional responses of Aedes aegypti chemosensory tissues in response to volatile DEET and citronella oil.

DEET and citronella oil are two of the most widely used mosquito repellents; however, their impact on chemosensory tissues is not fully understood. In their vapour phase, the repellency effect involves the olfactory system, with mosquitoes detecting and responding to diverse odorants through their antennae and mouthparts (maxillary palps and proboscis). In this study, we first performed repellency behavioural assays that indicated both DEET and citronella effectively impaired female Aedes aegypti host-seeking capabilities (i.e. landing on a host and taking a blood meal). We next used RNA seque

Review of the biodistribution and toxicity of the insect repellent N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET).

A review of the biodistribution and toxicity of the insect repellent N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET) is presented. Workers using repellent containing this compound may be exposed to greater than 442 g in 6 mo. In human studies, variable penetration into the skin of from 9 to 56% of a topically applied dose and absorption into the circulatory system of approximately 17% have been reported. Excretion of DEET by humans was initially rapid but not as complete as in animal models. Only about one-half of the absorbed DEET was excreted by humans over 5 d. Depot storage of DEET in the skin was also doc

N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET) exposure produces rapid and permanent damage in turfgrass.

Despite anecdotal evidence that suggests bug sprays containing N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET) damage turfgrasses, there is minimal peer-reviewed research investigating this in detail. The aims of the present study were to determine whether it is the DEET or the carrier solvent in bug sprays, ethanol, that damages turfgrasses, quantify the level of damage, and establish whether turfgrasses treated with DEET would recover in both indoor and outdoor environments. In a controlled, indoor environment, directly spraying DEET solutions on perennial ryegrass damaged leaves in a dose-dependent manne

Repellency of DEET, picaridin, and three essential oils to Triatoma rubida (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae).

The kissing bug, Triatoma rubida (Uhler) is a common hematophagous bug in Tucson, AZ, and is responsible for causing severe allergic reactions in some bitten individuals. DEET, picaridin, tea tree oil, peppermint oil, and citronella oil were tested for repellency to T. rubida and its ability to probe and feed on a small restrained rat. No long range repellency was observed with any of the test materials. The lowest repellent concentrations observed were: 10% DEET, 7% picaridin; 30% tea tree oil, 3.3% peppermint oil, and 0.165% citronella oil. Only citronella oil was able to stop all probing an

Mosquito repellency of carvacrol, thymol, and cinnamaldehyde nanogels against Aedes aegypti: a comparative study with DEET.

Aedes aegypti is a primary vector of arboviral diseases, including chikungunya, dengue fever, yellow fever, and Zika virus. Given the increasing global burden and the limitations of synthetic repellents, there is a growing need for safe and effective botanical alternatives, especially in endemic regions. This study formulated thymol-, carvacrol-, and cinnamaldehyde-loaded nanoemulsions via spontaneous emulsification and subsequently gelled using hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC). Viscosity and encapsulation efficiency were assessed using viscometry and Attenuated Total Reflection-Fourier Tr
