The latest NICE guideline for dementia highlights the value of diverse treatment options for the different stages and symptoms of dementia, including non-pharmacological treatments. Relevant literature also argues for the value of interv

The effectiveness of dance movement therapy in post-stroke rehabilitation is shown. The data of a systematic review are presented, which found that dance

Non-pharmacological interventions, such as dance therapy, emerge as promising alternatives to address both the physical symptoms and psychosocial aspects of FM. OBSERVATIONS: Literature review indicates that dance therapy offers multiple benefits, including improvements in mobility, q

Chinese ethnic dance therapy: cultural anthropology and health science perspectives on Tujia ethnic dances.

INTRODUCTION: Archaeological findings witness the anthropological roots of dance, while psychological, medical, cultural and aesthetic studies shed light on health promoting capacities and curative factors inhering in symbolic and expressive body movement. Since dance therapy became a multifaceted discipline in the middle of the 20th century, increasing evidence of beneficial effects has advocated the use of dance therapy in a broad spectrum of clinical and public health areas such as psychiatry, oncology, neurology, cardiology and geriatrics. Creative arts therapists (art therapists, dance/movement therapists, and music therapists) administer assessments and interventions that support the holistic well-being of military families affected by traumatic brain injury (TBI) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Clinical examples illustrate methods used by creative arts therapists to address the neurological, physiological, and psychosocial needs of service members and their families. Creative arts therapists describe areas of need, identify common goals, and present creative arts therapy interventions used with military families. Th

Effects of dance movement therapy and other dance-related interventions on depressive symptoms: a meta-analysis of evidence in the past decade.

Depression represents a leading global health challenge, with increasing demand for effective non-pharmacological interventions. Dance movement therapy (DMT) and other dance-based approaches have emerged as promising strategies for alleviating depressive symptoms, yet comprehensive synthesis of their efficacy remains limited. This meta-analysis evaluated the effects of DMT and other dance interventions on depressive symptoms across populations studied to date, while examining potential moderators including intervention type, duration, and comorbidities. Following PRISMA guidelines, we systemat

Impact of dance therapy on adults with psychological trauma: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Dance therapy is thought to improve mental and physical health by activating psychological and physiological processes such as motor coordination, and expression of emotions. Some currently used mind-body interventions for posttraumatic symptoms address both mental and physical health. Although some studies have evaluated the efficacy of dance therapy for posttraumatic symptoms, a systematic review of extant research has not been conducted. OBJECTIVES: To identify the effects of dance therapy in adults with psychological trauma as well as the barriers and facilitators associated w

Dance/movement therapy for improving psychological and physical outcomes in cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: Current cancer care increasingly incorporates psychosocial interventions. Cancer patients use dance/movement therapy to learn to accept and reconnect with their bodies, build new self-confidence, enhance self-expression, address feelings of isolation, depression, anger and fear and to strengthen personal resources. OBJECTIVES: To update the previously published review that examined the effects of dance/movement therapy and standard care versus standard care alone or standard care and other interventions on psychological and physical outcomes in patients with cancer. Feasibility, acceptability and effects of dance therapy in stroke patients: A systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Stroke is the leading cause of non-traumatic disability in adults, with balance and gait disturbances representing the main limitations of body functions. Dance therapy (DT) has shown positive effects in older adults and in patients with neurological pathologies. This systematic review aims to examine the feasibility, acceptability and effects of DT in stroke rehabilitation, specifically on functional gains of gait and balance. METHODS: A systematic search was carried out for articles published in the MEDLINE, PEDro, Web of Science, Scopus and CINHAL in February 2021 and updated

Effects of dance therapy in women with breast cancer: A systematic review protocol.

BACKGROUND: Cancer is an important public health problem with an increasing global incidence in the recent decades. Breast cancer has become the leading cause of death in women worldwide. Women suffering from breast cancer, as well as survivors, may experience some adverse effects of treatment-including cancer-related fatigue, sleep disorders, and pain-which may manifest alone or in combination with other symptoms. Non-pharmacological interventions, such as physical activity, have been associated with improvements in these adverse effects. This study aims to evaluate the effects of dance thera

Life-long music and dance relationships inform impressions of music- and dance-based movement therapies in individuals with and without mild cognitive impairment.

BACKGROUND: No effective therapies exist to prevent degeneration from Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) to Alzheimer's disease. Therapies integrating music and/or dance are promising as effective, non-pharmacological options to mitigate cognitive decline. OBJECTIVE: To deepen our understanding of individuals' relationships (i.e., histories, experiences and attitudes) with music and dance that are not often incorporated into music- and dance-based therapeutic design, yet may affect therapeutic outcomes. METHODS: Eleven older adults with MCI and five of their care partners/ spouses participated

BACKGROUND: The number of adolescents with depression has increased in mental health services over the past decade. New intervention options are needed for these patients. METHOD: Patients aged 13 to 17 years with depression are recruited from adolescent mental health services. Participants will be randomized into two groups. The treatment group will attend dance movement therapy for 12 weeks in addition to treatment as usual, while the control group will receive treatment as usual. The outcome measures include questionnaires and interviews assessing depression symptoms and body image. The pr

The effect of dance movement therapy on traumatized refugee women - a clinical controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Women worldwide are fleeing war, persecution and violence. Typically, they experienced multiple traumata in the home country, on the way, and in the host country. In Germany, less than 10% of the refugees in need receive mental health treatment. Dance movement therapy (DMT) was tested as a treatment option for traumatized refugee women regarding its potential to reduce symptoms of trauma, stress, depression and anxiety. METHODS: In a controlled within-group design, N = 24 traumatized refugee women from six countries, dwelling in communities of Southern Germany, were tested at base
