Validated geographic search filters for bibliographic databases: a scoping review.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this scoping review was to identify validated geographic search filters and report on their development and performance measures. INTRODUCTION: The number of scientific publications has considerably increased. Measures to limit search and screening efforts can help to increase the efficiency of preparing systematic reviews. Search filters are useful tools for reviewers to identify reports with common characteristics in bibliographic databases. Geographic search filters limit literature search results to a specific geographic characteristic (eg, a country or region).

[Dataplamt: a bibliographic database on traditional uses of Brazilian plants].

Unlike remedies from ancient systems like Chinese traditional medicine and Ayurveda, records of the traditional uses of Brazilian plants are scattered and lack interpretation. Dataplamt was created to recover this knowledge and make it readily available, and already contains data on 3,464 species recovered from 114 texts written prior to 1950; it spans 170 medicinal categories, with 28 addressing infectious or parasitic diseases. It also includes native plant names, confirming their ancestral roots. The Dataplamt database makes it possible to identify resilient traditional uses, which are impo

Alignment of systematic reviews published in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews and the Database of Abstracts and Reviews of Effectiveness with global burden-of-disease data: a bibliographic analysis.

BACKGROUND: Systematic reviews of high-quality evidence are used to inform policy and practice. To improve community health, the production of such reviews should align with burden of disease. This study aims to assess if the volume of research output from systematic reviews proportionally aligns with burden of disease assessed using percentages of mortality and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). METHODS: A cross-sectional audit of reviews published between January 2012 and August 2013 in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR) and Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects (

Association between stroke and Alzheimer's disease: systematic review and meta-analysis.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) and stroke are common disorders of aging, but the relationship between these two disorders remains uncertain. Recent evidence recognized that they frequently co-occur and are influenced by each other, while other studies have produced inconsistent results. We conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis of stroke on risk for AD and AD on risk for stroke subtypes to clarify the relation between these two disorders on the basis of the studies published from 1975 to November 2013 in the PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library databases. In total, 7 cohort studies and 2

Migraine and epilepsy: review of the literature.

Migraine and epilepsy are disorders that are common, paroxysmal, and chronic. In many ways they are clearly different diseases, yet there are some pathophysiological overlaps, and overlaps in clinical symptomatology, particularly with regard to visual and other sensory disturbances, pain, and alterations of consciousness. Epidemiological studies have revealed that the two diseases are comorbid in a number of individuals. Both are now recognized as originating from electrical disturbances in the brain, although their wider manifestations involve the recruitment of multiple pathogenic mechanisms

Treatment resistant schizophrenia and response to antipsychotics: a review.

BACKGROUND: There remains a lack of agreement regarding criteria for treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS) and definition of response. METHOD: A literature search was conducted to identify clinical studies of antipsychotics in TRS using PubMed, EMBASE and PsycINFO (last search 31 July 2011). Psychopharmacological studies with the number of participants of ≥ 40 were evaluated in terms of definitions for TRS and subsequent treatment response. RESULTS: Thirty-three studies of antipsychotics in TRS were reviewed. TRS has been defined mainly by severity in symptoms. Many studies based TRS with

Cognitive functioning in patients with carotid artery occlusion; a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with complete occlusion of the internal carotid artery (CAO) are vulnerable to cerebral hypoperfusion. Since cerebral hypoperfusion is associated with accelerated cognitive decline, patients with CAO may have an increased risk of cognitive impairment. We aimed to assess the prevalence and profile of cognitive impairment in patients with CAO and to explore the relation between hemodynamic impairment and cognitive functioning. METHODS: We systematically searched Medline and EMBASE for studies including patients with symptomatic or asymptomatic CAO subjected to cognitive t

Uric acid levels in subjects with bipolar disorder: A comparative meta-analysis.

Previous research has hypothesised increased uric acid levels, possibly because of an amplified purinergic metabolism and a reduced adenosine activity, in subjects with bipolar disorder. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed at estimating if individuals with bipolar disorder had uric acid levels higher than both healthy controls and subjects with major depression (trait marker hypothesis). It also tested if uric acid levels could differ in different phases of bipolar disorder (state marker hypothesis). Meta-analyses were carried out generating pooled standardized mean differences (SMD

Myalgic Encephalomyelitis: Symptoms and Biomarkers.

Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) continues to cause significant morbidity worldwide with an estimated one million cases in the United States. Hurdles to establishing consensus to achieve accurate evaluation of patients with ME continue, fueled by poor agreement about case definitions, slow progress in development of standardized diagnostic approaches, and issues surrounding research priorities. Because there are other medical problems, such as early MS and Parkinson's Disease, which have some similar clinical presentations, it is critical to accurately diagnose ME to make a differential diagnosi

Are respiratory abnormalities specific for panic disorder? A meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: There is evidence of baseline respiratory abnormalities in panic disorder (PD), but whether they are specific to PD remains unclear. To investigate this issue, we meta-analyzed results from studies comparing baseline respiratory and hematic variables between subjects with PD and subjects with other anxiety disorders. METHODS: A literature search in bibliographic databases was performed. Fixed-effects models were applied. Several moderator analyses and publication bias diagnostics were performed. RESULTS: We found: (1) significantly lower mean end-tidal partial pressure of CO(2) (

A systematic review and meta-analysis of clinical variables used in Huntington disease research.

Treatment effect in Huntington disease (HD) clinical trials has relied on primary outcome measures such as total motor score or functional rating scales. However, these measures have limited sensitivity, particularly in pre- to early stages of the disease. We performed a systematic review of HD clinical studies to identify endpoints that correlate with disease severity. Using standard HD keywords and terms, we identified 749 published studies from 1993 to 2011 based on the availability of demographic, biochemical, and clinical measures. The average and variability of each measure was abstracte

Search strategies (filters) to identify systematic reviews in MEDLINE and Embase.

BACKGROUND: Bibliographic databases provide access to an international body of scientific literature in health and medical sciences. Systematic reviews are an important source of evidence for clinicians, researchers, consumers, and policymakers as they address a specific health-related question and use explicit methods to identify, appraise and synthesize evidence from which conclusions can be drawn and decisions made. Methodological search filters help database end-users search the literature effectively with different levels of sensitivity and specificity. These filters have been developed f
