Genetic counseling is a communication process where information is provided in a nondirective way. Genetic counseling emphasizes informed decision making and provision of medical, psychological, and social support; genetic counseling is not advice giving. Individuals who are members of the deaf community (culturally deaf) present unique challenges to the ability of genetic counselors to be nondirective. In contrast to the medical model which considers deafness to be a pathological condition, many deaf people do not consider themselves to be handicapped but define themselves as being part of a

Culturally Deaf adults lost hearing at early ages, communicate primarily in American Sign Language (ASL), and self-identify as culturally Deaf. Communication barriers lead to isolation, low self-esteem, abuse, and inadequate health care. Screening Deaf patients for depressive symptoms poses challenge. Nurses are rarely familiar with ASL, and depression screening tools aren't easily translated from English to ASL. Consequently, Deaf adults are not adequately screened for depression. Qualitative interviews were conducted with culturally Deaf adults, and certified interpreters helped to enhance u

The anatomy curriculum is a place where professionalism can be learned and practiced, including training in cultural competence and communication skills for working with diverse populations. One population that has received little attention in terms of medical education are d/Deaf and hard of hearing (d/DHH) patients, although there is much evidence to support health care disparities in this population. Several major contributing factors include differing views of deafness between medical professionals and those who are culturally Deaf, a lack of understanding of Deaf culture and American Sign

BACKGROUND: Effective communication between health care professionals and Deaf and Hard of Hearing (D&HH) patients remains a challenge. Literature regarding health professionals' knowledge of the D&HH community and their barriers toward health care access is limited in Puerto Rico and suggests a need for research. Therefore, this descriptive study aims to evaluate future physician's knowledge about the Deaf culture and community in a student cohort at San Juan Bautista School of Medicine (SJBSM), with the objective of guiding our results toward improving our curriculum.
METHODS: Medical stude

Hearing people have given their perspectives on deaf1 people and their abilities since antiquity. Recent years have witnessed growth in American Sign Language (ASL) classes as a world language2 in U.S. high schools. This study examines hearing ASL learners' perspectives of the communities and cultures of signing deaf people after they learned about them as a part of their learning of ASL as a world language and assesses the basis on which they develop their perspectives. The N = 217 learners from three northeastern U.S. metropolitan high schools at three different class levels of ASL were aske

Persons with severe hearing loss live in a unique cultural context with which social workers may not be familiar. This paper reviews the skills needed for the culturally competent social work assessment with deaf clients, including communication skills, interviewing methods, taking case and family histories and behavioral observation.

This study examines Turkish Deaf adults' identity construction through interpretative phenomenological analysis. Seven Deaf parents (mean age = 59.14; 3 women, 4 men) with hearing children participated in semi-structured interviews conducted in Turkish Sign Language. Drawing on Social Identity Theory and Self-Categorization Theory, the findings show that participants construct identity through a tripartite social categorization: Deaf people (sign language users), hearing individuals, and those using medical devices. Participants reject disability labels and position themselves as cultural-ling

PURPOSE: Translate and culturally adapt the Deafness and Additional Disabilities Questionnaire (DAD-Q) into Brazilian Portuguese.
METHODS: Translation, back-translation, review by an expert committee, and cultural adaptation were conducted. For the cultural adaptation, 11 mothers of deaf children with additional disabilities, who use cochlear implants, participated. The reliability of the translated instrument was estimated using internal consistency analysis (Cronbach's Alpha). Equivalence was defined as the absence of difficulty in understanding the questions by at least 80% of the particip

As the field of education of the d/Deaf and hard of hearing (d/Dhh) continues to diversify, postsecondary institutions must pay close attention not only to the changing needs of d/Dhh students but to the practitioners they are preparing to serve this population. Students who are d/Dhh and come from homes where a language other than English or American Sign Language is used--d/Dhh Multilingual Learners (DMLs)--constitute 19.4%-35.0% of the d/Dhh student population (Gallaudet Research Institute, 2013). In the present article, part of a special American Annals of the Deaf issue on DMLs, the autho

Purpose: Physical activity (PA) is vital for everyone's health and wellbeing; however, there is, a paucity of research amongst culturally deaf adults. Especially, to understand the needs of deaf adults and how to get them involved in shaping interventions that would help deaf people to be physically active. The current study aimed to explore barriers and facilitators for engaging in PA amongst deaf adults. Method: Focus groups involving nine culturally deaf adults communicating using British sign language were conducted and analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. Findings: Barriers includi

PURPOSE: Recognition of disparities for vulnerable populations in the field of oncology is increasing, but little attention has been paid to deaf patients. At least a million Americans are culturally deaf and use American Sign Language. Poor linguistic and cultural competency among physicians is a barrier to care delivery for these patients, placing them at risk for treatment disparities. To better educate oncology practitioners, including radiation oncologists, regarding the unique needs of this cohort, we performed an evidence-based literature review of culturally competent care for deaf pat

The Mini-Mental State Exam (MMSE) is commonly used to screen cognitive function in a clinical setting. The measure has been published in over 50 languages; however, the validity and reliability of the MMSE has yet to be assessed with the culturally Deaf elderly population. Participants consisted of 117 Deaf senior citizens, aged 55-89 (M = 69.44, SD = 8.55). Demographic information, including state of residence, age, and history of depression, head injury, and dementia diagnoses, were collected. A standard form of the MMSE was used with modification of test administration and stimuli including

There is a need for culturally competent health care providers (HCPs) to provide care to deaf signers, who are members of a linguistic and cultural minority group. Many deaf signers have lower health literacy levels due to deprivation of incidental learning opportunities and inaccessibility of health-related materials, increasing their risk for poorer health outcomes. Communication barriers arise because HCPs are ill-prepared to serve this population, with deaf signers reporting poor-quality interactions. This has translated to errors in diagnosis, patient nonadherence, and ineffective health

Traditional research examining the communicational choices made by families with deaf children tends to emanate from the premise that families engage with either of the two grand discourses on deafness (i.e., the medical or cultural-linguistic perspective). This study investigated hearing mother's engagement with the educational options for their child from a dynamic, poststructural perspective. Three Flemish mothers were interviewed in-depth at the child's ages of 6, 9, 12, 18, and 24 months. The data were analyzed within a theoretical model that describes the positioning process of the mothe

This article is the third in a series of eight articles that comprise this special issue on family-centered early intervention for children who are deaf or hard of hearing and their families (FCEI-DHH). It highlights the origins of FCEI-DHH in Western contexts and well-resourced locations and emphasizes the role of culture(s) in shaping FCEI-DHH. This article also cautions against the direct application of the 10 FCEI-DHH Principles presented in this issue across the globe without consideration of cultural implications. Cultural perceptions of decision-making processes and persons who can be d

Surveys of attitudes of individuals with deafness and their families towards genetic testing or prenatal diagnosis have mostly been carried out in the West. It is expected that the perceptions and attitudes would vary amongst persons of different cultures and economic background. There is little information on the prevailing attitudes for genetic testing and prenatal diagnosis for deafness in developing countries. Therefore, this study evaluates the motivations of Indian people with inherited hearing loss towards such testing. Twenty-eight families with history of congenital hearing loss (23 h

BACKGROUND: Equitable access to care is a cornerstone of inclusive and fair societies, yet Deaf patients continue to encounter entrenched barriers in Canadian health care systems that compromise safety, trust, and health outcomes. We aimed to characterize the experiences of culturally Deaf community members with accessing and navigating health care, and to identify priorities for creating equitable and culturally safe care.
METHODS: We conducted a qualitative co-design study grounded in a critical-interpretive paradigm in partnership with Deaf Services Canada, a nonprofit organization that pr
