[Documentation of clinical death in preliminary death certificates].

The emergency physician acting within the framework of organised first-aid service, is not obliged to perform a post-mortem examination or to hold a coroner's inquest and to issue a death certificate. It is easy to understand why the relevant authorities must insist on the immediate submission of a death certificate. Such a certificate can be issued only if unequivocal signs of death definitely confirm that the decrease is an indisputable fact. To cope with this situation, a printed form has been designed which is used to document the occurrence of clinical death.

Study on death certificates and postmortem examination certificates written by Korean emergency physicians.

INTRODUCTION: Statistics on death are the basis of a country's health, safety, and welfare policies. Emergency physicians issue a postmortem examination certificate (PEC) for death outside the hospital as well as a death certificate (DC) for death in the hospital. This study investigated the actual conditions and criteria for writing a DC and PEC, writing environment, and doctor's experience. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The physicians' DC and PEC writing experience and demographic data were analyzed. The questions focused on CPR, patient's medical certificate, time and place of death, difficulty in

Certification of death and the clinician.

Patterns of certification of death and the subsequent selection of an underlying cause of death are analysed. The need for awareness among certifying practitioners of the issues and the rules for the selection is demonstrated. There is scope for further improvement in certifying practice among medical practitioners and coroners.

[Analysis of death certificates in postmortem examination waivers].

INTRODUCTION AND AIM: The practices of autopsies and waivers in three Hungarian counties subject to the same statutory framework in a 5-year interval have been examined, with special attention to cases of non-natural death. [Medical and legal problems of multiple death certificates].

In cases of unnatural death and unclear manner of death the police has according to section 159 StPO to inform the prosecution. The prosecutor has to decide how the case shall be handled. Independent inquiries or even independent handling of the case by the police are not scheduled. For legal purposes it is not possible to induce another doctor to issue another death certificate with the manner of death certified as natural.

Medical Certification of Cause of Death.

Medical Certificate of Cause of Death, commonly called Death Certificate, is the most frequently issued certificate, at least by a government employed medical officer, if not by a private practitioner. It is common knowledge that many medical officers, even some of those with incomparable medical knowledge and expertise, do not fill up this document of immense medical and legal importance correctly. The reasons may be many, ranging from ignorance to indifference. Medical officers of Armed Forces Medical Services attending refresher courses (MOJC) have always requested the authors for a class o

Certification of deaths attributable to epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the number of sudden unexpected epilepsy deaths occurring annually in England and Wales in those 16-50 years of age. METHODS: All 1997 death entries mentioning epilepsy as a cause of death in those 16-50 years were examined and classified as sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP), other epilepsy related deaths, or non-epilepsy deaths. RESULTS: 612 death entries were obtained with postmortem examination having been performed in 498 cases. Forty four deaths were certified as being attributable to SUDEP and a further 292 deaths were considered to be probable SUDEP ca

Death certification of "suicide by cop".

Death certification of "suicide by cop" is controversial among some medical examiners and coroners. We present five such deaths that were certified as suicides and discuss the medico-legal issues involved with these certifications. To certify such a death as a suicide, certain criteria should be met. Suicide by cop is a circumstance that involves competing intentional acts that may result in dichotomous determinations of the manner of death. Despite the absence of direct self-infliction, there is overwhelming evidence that these five individuals intended to end their own lives. Their use of an

Invalid certification of young deaths.

Necropsy reports were traced for 3928 of the 7049 Sheffield children who died between 1947 and 1979. Comparison of these reports with the related death certificates showed important differences in the underlying cause of death in 15%, even after allowing for variation in diagnostic terms and incorrect completion of certificates. Approximately one third of certificates had the underlying cause of death entered first instead of last in Part I, and in 251 (6%), the underlying cause of death was found in Part II of the certificate. There was an overrepresentation of infectious diseases and underre

Using death certificates to characterize sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS): opportunities and limitations.

OBJECTIVE: To examine cause-of-death terminology written on death certificates for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and to determine the adequacy of this text data in more fully describing circumstances potentially contributing to SIDS deaths. STUDY DESIGN: With 2003 and 2004 US mortality files, we analyzed all deaths that were assigned the underlying cause-of-death code for SIDS (R95). With the terminology written on the death certificates, we grouped cases into SIDS-related cause-of-death subcategories and then assessed the percentage of cases in each subcategory with contributory or pos

Reclassification and weighting of multiple causes of death: US death certificates 2003-2023.

Death certificates record causes of death as reported by certifiers (Entity Axis) and as standardized by mortality coding rules (Record Axis). Conventional statistics reduce these to a single underlying cause, ignoring other contributing conditions; weighting schemes can instead distribute the burden across all listed causes. We evaluated reclassification from Entity to Record axis and weighting across all 56,986,831 US death certificates from 2003 to 2023, mapping International Classification of Diseases (ICD)-10 codes to 14 broad disease categories and testing three weighting schemes: W1 (50

Availability of death review of children using death certificates and forensic autopsy results.

The Model Project for Child Death Review (CDR) was initiated in Japan, but parental consent is required for detailed investigations. We proposed an alternative method to review child deaths using death certificates and forensic autopsy results when parental consent is not provided. We extracted and reviewed death certificates for the deceased younger than 18 years from among all certificates submitted in Shiga Prefecture between 2015 and 2017. In addition, we analyzed autopsy records in cases that underwent forensic autopsy. The prevalence of each cause of death was compared among age groups.

Causes of death in Japanese diabetics. A 20-year study of death certificates.

Death certificates filed between 1960 and 1979 in Osaka, Japan were analyzed to study causes of death in diabetic patients. It was observed that diseases of the circulatory system increased continuously from 15.2% in 1960-1964 to 27.2% in 1975-1979. Cerebrovascular disease and disease of heart were the leading causes of death throughout the study period. The rate of increase was much faster for disease of heart than for cerebrovascular disease, and there was only a small difference between them as cause of death in diabetic patients at the end of the observation period. Malignant neoplasms, ci

Recovering missing mesothelioma deaths in death certificates using hospital records.

BACKGROUND: In Brazil, underreporting of mesothelioma and cancer of the pleura (MCP) is suspected to be high. Records from death certificates (SIM) and hospital registers (SIH-SUS) can be combined to recover missing data but only anonymous databases are available. This study shows how common data can be used for linkage and as an assessment of accuracy. METHODS: Mesothelioma (all sites, ICD-10 codes C45.0-C45.9) and cancer of the pleura (C38.4) were retrieved from both information systems and combined using a linkage algorithm. Accuracy was examined with non-anonymous databases, limited to th
