Characteristics of deceleration capacity and deceleration runs in vasovagal syncope.

PURPOSE: Increased vagal activity plays a prominent role in vasovagal syncope (VVS). The aim of this study was to characterize vagal function in VVS by evaluating the heart rate (HR) deceleration capacity (DC) and the HR deceleration runs (DRs) in patients with VVS between attacks. METHODS: A total of 188 consecutive VVS patients were enrolled in the study, of whom 129 had positive head-up tilt test (HUTT); 132 healthy participants were enrolled as controls. DC, DRs (DR2, i.e., episodes of 2 consecutive beat-to-beat HR decelerations), and the sum of DR8-10 (very long DR [VLDR]) were calculate

Vertical deceleration injuries.

Six patients simultaneously sustained vertical deceleration injuries. Vertical deceleration injuries are serious and characteristically involve major weight bearing structures with forces transmitted through the foot, leg, pelvis and vertebral column. Injuries of the lower extremity are likely to be unilateral and comminuted because the force of deceleration is applied to a small area. The severity of the injury increases by increasing the rate of deceleration and decreasing the distance through which the body is decelerated. More severe injury occurs when deceleration forces are applied to th

Higher Eccentric Strength Mitigates Deceleration Performance Decline During Repeated Deceleration Tasks.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to (1) examine the relationship between eccentric strength and the ability to maintain deceleration performance following running, (2) investigate changes in deceleration kinematics during repeated deceleration tasks, and (3) explore associations between the changes in lower-limb mechanical capacities during jump tests and deceleration capacity under load. METHODS: Twenty male athletes participated. Maximal eccentric and concentric strength were assessed via back squat protocols. Participants completed the repeated acceleration-deceleration task consisting of 50 repe

Variable deceleration features and intrapartum fetal acidemia - The role of deceleration area.

OBJECTIVE: In recent years deceleration area has received increasing attention as a potential predictor of intrapartum fetal hypoxia. In several studies, the area has been manually esteemed as triangular in shape, which might introduce bias. In addition, the commonly used outcome acidemia in umbilical artery is affected by mode of delivery. We wanted to investigate the association between the variable deceleration features area, duration, depth and cumulative deceleration area (30 and 60 min) and intrapartum fetal acidemia measured as lactate concentration at fetal scalp blood sampling (FBS) i

Tachycardia after acute deceleration injury.

A 29-year-old man crashed at high speed into another vehicle at traffic lights. He was able to get out of his van but then collapsed after running a few metres. On arrival in the emergency department he was conscious, with a pulse of 140 beats/min and blood pressure of 110/32 mm Hg. He had collapsing arterial pulses and an early diastolic murmur. He had a chest radiograph (figure 1A) and a skeletal survey which demonstrated multiple fractures, involving his left hand, right femur, right calcaneus, and left first and second ribs. A CT scan of the thorax was performed with a radiological contras

Decelerational thoracic injury.

BACKGROUND: Among the five major decelerational thoracic injuries [myocardial contusion (MC), traumatic aortic disruption (TAD), sternal fracture (SF), flail chest (FC), and tracheobronchial disruption (TBD)], coexisting injuries are seemingly rare. METHODS: To test this hypothesis, we reviewed the records of all patients, with final diagnosis (FDX) codes of these injuries, treated at our Level I trauma center for the 10 years preceding 1997. RESULTS: Among 142 patients, all victims of motor vehicle crashes, there were 38 MC, 36 TAD, 33 FC, 28 SF, and 7 TBD. There were six coexisting injurie

Decelerating the aging process.

Diseases whose incidence and prevalence are increased in the elderly and whose cytopathology, hormones, and immunogenesis differ, generally are included in the field of geriatrics. These conditions may be precipitated or accelerated in quantity or type by a wide variety of genetic and environmental factors. Chronological and progressive deterioration of selected cells, organs, and tissues, and their functions may occur without major specific pathology. These processes are referred to as senescence and its study, is gerontology.Geriatrics includes senility and diseases of the elderly. Terms ass

Association of atypical decelerations with acidemia.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the incidence of atypical fetal heart rate deceleration characteristics in term labor and their association with acidemia. METHODS: A 5-year retrospective cohort study was performed of all singleton, nonanomalous gestations delivered at 37 weeks or after. Thirty minutes of electronic fetal monitoring before delivery were interpreted by two formally trained research nurses, blind to clinical and outcome data, using American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (the College) guidelines as well as deceleration features historically referred to as atypica such as shou

Introducing the Novel Deceleration Threshold Method: Comparative Reliability to Previous Sprint Deceleration Analysis Methods in Team-Sport Athletes.

Pre-planned deceleration assessments are vital for profiling team sport athletes as they provide a measure of the athletes' ability to implement effective performance and protection strategies to tolerate the substantial mechanical forces. Although task requirements of these linear assessments are generally consistent, current research employs low sampling technology, which limits the ability to define the deceleration start point and subsequently the reliability. Therefore, this study compared the intra- and inter-day reliability of three deceleration assessment analysis methods: set distance

Is amnioinfusion for intrapartum variable decelerations effective? Evaluation of the total deceleration area: A retrospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: Data regarding the efficiency of amnioinfusion in the presence of recurrent variable decelerations (VD) are limited. Total deceleration area (TDA) has been shown to be a useful indicator of both intrapartum fetal acid-base status and neonatal morbidity. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of amnioinfusion during labor for decreasing the TDA in deliveries complicated by recurrent VD. METHODS: Departmental protocol is to perform amnioinfusion after 30 min of recurrent VD, if decelerations continue despite intrauterine resuscitation. Electronic fetal monitor

Assessing Deceleration Performance: Methodological and Practical Considerations.

Deceleration is a critical locomotor skill for athletes competing in multi-directional speed sports. Greater deceleration can help athletes perform rapid reductions in velocity facilitating rapid changes of direction, whilst the high mechanical forces associated with braking can be linked to a heightened risk of fatigue, tissue damage and injuries. Despite the clear importance of deceleration in sport, research and applied practices in the past have predominantly focused on assessing an athlete's sprint acceleration and maximum velocity capabilities, neglecting the necessity to be able to dece

Case of extreme growth deceleration after burns.

Studies have demonstrated deceleration in both weight and height following burns in children. It is expected patients will display catch up growth and return to normal weight within three years but continued height deficiency may remain in cases of severe burns. We describe a case of severe growth retardation of 8 years old orphan child from Ukraine who suffered of burn less than 40% of total body surface area when he was a 3 years of life. His case was complicated by domestic abuse, neglect and limited medical care. He initially presented to the United States for surgical care of his contract

Is It Time to Redefine Fetal Decelerations in Cardiotocography?

Historically, fetal heart rate (FHR) decelerations were classified into "early", "late", and "variable" based on their relationship with uterine contractions. So far, three different putative etiologies were taken for granted. Recently, this belief, passed down through generations of birth attendants, has been questioned by physiologists. This narrative review aimed to assess the evidence on pathophysiology behind intrapartum FHR decelerations. This narrative review is based on information sourced from online peer-reviewed articles databases and recommendations from the major scientific societ
