Iodine speciation in deep eutectic solvents.

Iodine has been shown to act as a good electrocatalyst for metal digestion in deep eutectic solvents (DESs) but little is known about its speciation or reactivity in these high chloride containing media. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy measurements were made at the iodine K-edge in a range of DESs with different glycolic or acidic hydrogen bond donors (HBDs), along with examining the effect of iodine concentration between 0.01 and 0.5 mol dm-3. Three groups of speciation were detected: mixed I2Cl-/I3- (glycol and lactic acid systems), mixed I3-/I2 (oxalic acid and

Switchable Deep Eutectic Solvents for Sustainable Sulfonamide Synthesis.

A sustainable and scalable protocol for synthesizing variously functionalized sulfonamides, from amines and sulfonyl chlorides, has been developed using environmentally responsible and reusable choline chloride (ChCl)-based deep eutectic solvents (DESs). In ChCl/glycerol (1 : 2 mol mol-1) and ChCl/urea (1 : 2 mol mol-1), these reactions yield up to 97 % under aerobic conditions at ambient temperature within 2-12 h. The practicality of the method is exemplified by the sustainable synthesis of an FFA4 agonist and a key building block en route to anti-Alzheimer drug BMS-299897. A subtle interplay

Effective absorption of dichloromethane using deep eutectic solvents.

Chlorinated volatile organic compounds (VOCs), of which dichloromethane (DCM) has become one of the main components because of its extensive use and strong volatility, are recognized as extremely hazardous and refractory pollutants in the atmosphere. The efficient treatment of DCM is of great significance to the protection of environment and human health. In this work, the strategy of DCM capture with deep eutectic solvents (DESs) with different hydrogen bond acceptors (HBAs) and hydrogen bond donors (HBDs) was proposed and systematically investigated. The experimental results show that tetrab

Deep eutectic solvents based on sugars for oral applications.

Solubility is a critical parameter in drug formulation to achieve the desired therapeutical concentration. Most drugs are weak acids or bases and, therefore, exhibit low solubility and poor oral availability. The main aim of this work is the use of Deep Eutectic Systems (DESs) for improving the solubility of drugs in aqueous medium. In this case, we use DESs formed by choline chloride and sugars (xylitol, fructose, glucose and sorbitol) at different proportions of water. These compounds present low toxicity, and thus can be used in syrups or liquid formulations. Different physicochemical prope

Are Grignard Reactions in Deep Eutectic Solvents Interface-Driven?

Due to their high reactivity, organolithium and organomagnesium addition to ketones is usually performed under inert atmosphere at low temperature. Recent work has shown that, by dissolving the substrate in deep eutectic solvents (DES), these processes can be carried out on the benchtop, in air at room temperature. Surprisingly, the organometallic reagent, added to the DES from an organic solution, works in these conditions and gives better yields than in the standard setup. Here, we investigated acetophenone in a (1:2) choline chloride:glycerol (ChCl:Gly) DES solution by experimental liquid d

Sulfur dioxide absorption by novel green solvents of deep eutectic solvents: Modeling screening.

Sulfur dioxide (SO2), produced mainly from the combustion of coal, is the most important cause of acidic rain, skin diseases, and environmental issues. To overcome the environmental problems, SO2 must be captured on an industrial scale before it is released into the air. In chemical industries, organic solvents are used for partial absorption of SO2. However, those organic solvents have negative environmental effects. Thus, proposing environmentally friendly and green solvents for SO2 absorption is vital for industries. Recently, increased attention has been paid to capturing SO2 using Deep Eu

Lipase-mediated Baeyer-Villiger oxidation of benzylcyclopentanones in ester solvents and deep eutectic solvents.

This work presents the chemo-enzymatic Baeyer-Villiger oxidation of α-benzylcyclopentanones in ester solvents as well as deep eutectic solvents (DES). In the first part of the work the effect of selected reaction conditions on the reaction rate was determined. The oxidation process was most effective in ethyl acetate at 55 °C, with the use of lipase B from Candida antarctica immobilized on acrylic resin and UHP as oxidant. Ultimately, these preliminary studies prompted the development of an effective method for the implementation of lipase-mediated Baeyer-Villiger oxidation of benzylcyclopenta

Thermodynamic Study of Amine-Based Deep Eutectic Solvents with EtOH.

The densities and viscosities of the three amine-based deep eutectic solvents (DESs), i.e., [EmimCl]-[MEA], [BmimCl]-[MEA], and [HmimCl]-[MEA], mixed with ethanol (EtOH), were measured from 288.15 to 323.15 K, and their enthalpies of mixing were determined at 298.15 and 308.15 K. Negative excess molar volumes across the entire compositional range indicate significant volume contraction and enhanced molecular packing, and their temperature dependence suggests the dominance of packing effects over hydrogen-bonding. Viscosity deviations show a characteristic U-shaped composition dependence, refle

Boosting antibiotics performance by new formulations with deep eutectic solvents.

The critical scenario of antimicrobial resistance to antibiotics highlights the need for improved therapeutics and/or formulations. Herein, we demonstrate that deep eutectic solvents (DES) formulations are very promising to remarkably improve the solubility, stability and therapeutic efficacy of antibiotics, such as ciprofloxacin. DES aqueous solutions enhance the solubility of ciprofloxacin up to 430-fold while extending the antibiotic stability. The developed formulations can improve, by 2 to 4-fold, the susceptibility of Gram-negative (Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and Gram-p

Thermodynamic Study of Amine-Based Deep Eutectic Solvents with H2O.

The densities and viscosities of ([C n mimCl]-[MEA] + H2O) systems (n = 2, 4, 6) were measured over 288.15-323.15 K, and the enthalpies of mixing were determined at 298.15 and 308.15 K. Density data showed nonmonotonic composition dependence with extrema near x DES ≈ 0.4-0.5, and negative excess molar volumes indicated enhanced molecular packing. Viscosity increased sharply at low DES content and more gradually toward pure DESs, exhibiting S-shape deviation profiles that reflect structural rearrangements in both DES-rich and H2O-rich regions. Negative enthalpies of mixing confirmed exothermic

Valorization of waste tomato leaves with natural deep eutectic solvents.

Waste produced during cultivation of edible plants can be a valuable source of bioactive molecules. Herein, we present the valorization of tomato leaves to obtain biologically active extracts. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs), composed of natural ingredients, were applied as extracting solvents. The extracts were rich in bioactive chemicals such as phenolics and flavonoids, with rutin as the main component (∼6 mg/g of biomass). The obtained extracts showed high antioxidative potential. Moreover, it was possible to recycle DES for subsequent extractions. Evaluation of the antimicrobial activity of

Alkynes Hydration in Three-Component Double-Acidic Deep Eutectic Solvents.

In this work, a sustainable method for the hydration of both terminal and internal alkynes is presented, affording the corresponding ketones with complete Markovnikov regioselectivity. The key advantage of this approach lies in the use of recently developed three-component, double-acidic deep eutectic solvents (DESs), designed by our research team, which act as triple-active media-simultaneously serving as solvents, reagents, and catalysts. The reaction setup is straightforward and can be carried out under conventional or dielectric heating, typically providing the desired products in good to

A deep eutectic solvent is an effective cryoprotective agent for platelets.

The most widely used method of platelet cryopreservation requires the addition of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO; Me2SO) as a cryoprotective agent (CPA) and pre-freeze removal of Me2SO before freezing to mitigate toxicity. However, alternative CPAs such as deep eutectic solvents (DES), which are less toxic could simplify this process. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a Proline-Glycerol (Prol-Gly 1:3) DES as a platelet CPA. Platelets were cryopreserved at -80 °C using 10 % Prol-Gly 1:3 (DES; n = 6), or in the absence of a cryoprotectant (no CPA; n = 6). Platelets were also

A Deep Eutectic Solvent-Based Approach to Intravenous Formulation.

Clinically viable formulations of hydrophobic drugs, for example, chemotherapeutics, require strategies to promote sufficient drug solubilization. However, such strategies often involve the use of organic solvents that pose a significant risk in generating toxic, unstable products. Using verteporfin as a drug, a deep eutectic solvent (DES)-based approach to solvate drugs in a simple one-step process is reported. Lipoidal DES composed of choline and oleate is used to successfully solvate verteporfin, resulting in stable sub-100 nm nanocomplexes. The nanocomplexes successfully demonstrate effici

Toxicity of Natural Deep Eutectic Solvent Betaine:Glycerol in Rats.

Natural deep eutectic solvents (NaDES) are new natural solvents in green chemistry that in some cases have been shown to allow better extraction of plant bioactive molecules compared to conventional solvents and higher phenolic compound absorption in rodents. However, there is a serious lack of information regarding their in vivo safety. The purpose of this study was to verify the safety of a NaDES (betaine:glycerol (1:2 mole ratio) of water) extract from green coffee beans, rich in polyphenols. Twelve 6-week-old male Wistar rats were randomized into two groups of 6 animals each and twice dail

Synthesis of Pharmacologically Important Perimidines using Eco-Friendly Deep Eutectic Solvents.

In this study, we have presented a green and efficient protocol for the synthesis of diverse perimidine derivatives by employing deep eutectic solvents (DESs)-acting as reaction media and catalyst. Markedly, this method not only eliminates the need for hazardous solvents and expensive catalysts but also works under operationally mild and eco-friendly conditions while affording the anticipated products in good-to-excellent yields. Among the various tested eutectic mixtures, the combination of choline chloride (ChCl) with N, N'-dimethylurea (DMU) showed the best efficiency and reproducibility wi

Deep eutectic solvents@enteric technology for orally delivering anticoagulant macromolecule drug.

Low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) is one of the most clinically used anticoagulants to improve venous circulation. However, LMWH requires repeated injections, leading to poor medication compliance. Herein, we developed a deep eutectic solvents (DESs)@enteric technology, an intestinal absorption promotion platform, for the oral administration of LMWH. DESs with geranic acid (Ge) and choline (Ch) were first synthesized and characterized. Then, the DES-LMWH complex was prepared with a DES2:1 (Ge and Ch in a 2:1 molar ratio), demonstrating superior intestinal absorption and high biocompatibility
