Chemical defoliants are applied to about 40% of the U.S. Cotton acreage as a harvest-aid practice prior to machine picking. Raw cottons derived from defoliated and nondefoliated fields were examined for content of bract and leaf trash Chemical defoliation lowered, but did not remove, leaf as a major trash component. The content of bract was unaffected by this harvest-aid practice. The histamine content in green leaf trash was 10X that found in nongreen leaf trash.

Chemical defoliation is essential for mechanized cotton harvesting, but excessive thidiazuron (TDZ), frequently induces a "leaf sticking" phenotype characterized by wilting without abscission, which severely compromises harvest efficiency. We report the case of a woman who introduced 20 mL of diquat concentrate intravaginally. Abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, burning chest pains, and somnolence appeared within the first 24 hours. Subchdronic administration of S,S,S-tributyl phosphorotrithioate (DEF) caused 3 toxicologic effects in hens, depending upon route of administration. Small delay oral doses (0.5--20 mg/kg) of DEF produced ataxia, which progressed to paralysis and death in some birds. Large daily oral doses (40 and 80 mg/kg) caused a 'late acute' effect 4 days after administration.
