Despite our many differences, one superordinate category we all belong to is 'humans'. To strip away or overlook others' humanity, then, is to mark them as 'other' and, typically, 'less than'. We review growing evidence revealing how and why we subtly disregard the humanity of those around us. We then highlight new research suggesting that we continue to blatantly dehumanize certain groups, overtly likening them to animals, with important implications for intergroup hostility. We discuss advances in understanding the experience of being dehumanized and novel interventions to mitigate dehumaniz

Past work has found that more attractive and more intelligent appearing faces are ascribed more humanlike sophistication at zero acquaintance, but past work has only employed White faces. Of interest in the present work is whether similar effects occur across target race. Across two studies we investigate if the relationships between attractiveness and perceived intelligence vary across Black and White, male and female faces. Across both studies, we find that more attractive faces are evaluated as more humanlike across target race and gender, but notably that target race moderates the predicti

The purpose of this study was to examine associations between daily experiences of intimate partner dehumanizing deindividuation and pregnant women's emotional and relational well-being. We also examined uncompassionate self-responding as a path through which dehumanizing deindividuation exerts its negative effects. A community sample of 154 pregnant women in the United States completed daily surveys over 14 days assessing dehumanizing deindividuation experiences from partner, negative and positive affect, relationship satisfaction, and uncompassionate self-responding. Dynamic structural equat

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Self-dehumanization is the experience of feeling less or other than human, and is known to be experienced by people with psychosis. Existing measures of self-dehumanization are limited in their applicability to psychosis, and have not been developed with people with lived experience. The aim of this study was to develop and validate a measure of self-dehumanization in psychosis in partnership with key stakeholder groups.
STUDY DESIGN: Firstly, domains were specified based on review of existing theories of self-dehumanization and qualitative research on self-dehumani

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Increasing numbers of unhoused older individuals in the United States underscores the urgency for tailored services and support. Previous studies demonstrate prevalent negative attitudes and dehumanizing perceptions toward unhoused people. Additionally, past research highlights the influence of ageism and dehumanization on the care older adults receive. However, limited work addresses the layered dehumanization faced by unhoused aging individuals. This study investigated how dehumanizing perceptions of homelessness were associated with age.

Historically, dehumanization has enabled members of advantaged groups to 'morally disengage' from disadvantaged group suffering, thereby facilitating acts of intergroup aggression such as colonization, slavery and genocide. But is blatant dehumanization exclusive to those at the top 'looking down', or might disadvantaged groups similarly dehumanize those who dominate them? We examined this question in the context of intergroup warfare in which the disadvantaged group shoulders a disproportionate share of casualties and may be especially likely to question the humanity of the advantaged group.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Veterinarians often experience poor mental health, including higher than typical rates of depression and anxiety. Self-dehumanization, which refers to the feeling of being less than human, may reflect an important yet neglected factor in poor veterinarian mental health.
METHODS: 201 veterinarians completed an online survey consisting of demographic questions, questions regarding their practice settings, and measures of self-dehumanization, depression, anxiety, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress.
RESULTS: About 10% of veterinarians reported self-dehumanization. Mos

Despite the emergence of research into interpersonal dehumanization, there has been little by way of empirical investigation of the phenomenon within the context of romantic relationships. To address this, we introduce and validate the Dehumanization in Romantic Relationships Scale (DIRRS), a self-report measure of dehumanization perpetration and targeting within close relationships. In Study 1 (N = 1251, M age = 25.35, SD = 6.03), confirmatory factor analysis revealed that the dimensionality of interpersonal dehumanization may be more nuanced than first thought. Specifically, a four factor fi

In the last 25 years, research on dehumanization-the tendency to perceive others as less than fully human-has spiked and evolved in many ways. In the current review, we will provide an overview of the various methodological and conceptual trends in this research area and introduce a new way of conceptualizing dehumanizing perceptions. Focusing on developments in neuroscience that have shown how human and object stimuli are typically processed in different ways using specific brain areas, dehumanization can be understood as the fading of this human-object divide. We will demonstrate what this p

Dehumanization is a topic of significant interest for academia and society at large. Empirical studies often have people rate the evolved nature of outgroups and prior work suggests immigrants are common victims of less-than-human treatment. Despite existing work that suggests who dehumanizes particular outgroups and who is often dehumanized, the extant literature knows less about why people dehumanize outgroups such as immigrants. The current work takes up this opportunity by examining why people dehumanize immigrants said to be illegal and how measurement format affects dehumanization rating

[Retraction notice: A retraction for this article was reported in Vol 155(6) of Journal of Experimental Psychology: General (see record 2027-81929-005). A reader reported an error in the paper's reference list. Further inspection identified nine references with multiple other errors. In addition, errors in data processing and reporting were identified that affected the structure of the data and the resulting analyses, leading to changes in parameter estimates and the statistical significance of several reported effects. The article authors were made aware of these issues and confirmed errors i

PURPOSE: Emerging evidence indicates that incarcerated populations' perceptions of dehumanization by officers are prevalent, yet measures of it are few, and to our knowledge, no self-report measure of dehumanization from officers exists. To fill this gap, we have developed the Perceived Dehumanization from Officers Scale (PDOS), which is designed as a brief measure to assess perception of officer treatment as dehumanizing.
METHODS: In this article, we provide preliminary evidence from two studies examining the reliability and validity of the PDOS. In study 1, a jail sample (n = 411), we analy

We tested the novel hypothesis that the dehumanization of prisoners varies as a function of how soon they will be released from prison. Seven studies indicate that people ascribe soon-to-be-released prisoners greater mental sophistication than those with more time to serve, all other things being equal. Studies 3 to 6 indicate that these effects are mediated by perceptions that imprisonment has served the functions of rehabilitation, retribution, and future deterrence. Finally, Study 7 demonstrates that beliefs about rehabilitation and deterrence may be the most important in accounting for the

BACKGROUND: Gender earnings inequality remains a significant issue in the labor market. In response, women may perceive attractiveness as a potential resource. However, the effectiveness of attractiveness may vary depending on whether it is assessed from a first-person or third-person perspective.
METHODS: To explore how attractiveness is perceived in the context of gender earnings inequality, we conducted two studies. Study 1 examined women's self-perceptions of their attractiveness when faced with gender earnings inequality. Study 2 investigated how third-person observers perceive women's e

Inpatient psychiatric hospitalization is often negatively experienced, with previous studies indicating a high frequency of traumatic occurrences. This study aimed to expand upon such research, by obtaining service user perspectives on how inpatient psychiatric hospitalization may constitute an experience of trauma. Relevant posts and comments on the Reddit community r/PsychWardChronicles were collected that described potentially traumatic experiences associated with hospitalization. Reflexive thematic analysis of the data led to the development of 3 themes: neglect and abuse, coercion and obe

OBJECTIVES: This work sought to describe the meanings constructed in the experiences of women in relation to the care received by the healthcare staff at the moment of delivery.
METHODS: Qualitative study using the procedures proposed by the Grounded theory for data analysis. The sample comprised 18 women over 14 years of age, between 40 days and 6 months postpartum. Twelve of the participants were selected through convenience and to reach saturation of the categories, six more participants were included by using theoretical sampling. Semistructured interviews were conducted in three informat

INTRODUCTION: Substances and the people who use them have been dehumanized for decades. As a result, lawmakers and healthcare providers have implemented policies that subjected millions to criminalization, incarceration, and inadequate resources to support health and wellbeing. While there have been recent shifts in public opinion on issues such as legalization, in the case of marijuana in the U.S., or addiction as a disease, dehumanization and stigma are still leading barriers for individuals seeking treatment. Integral to the narrative of "substance users" as thoughtless zombies or violent c

INTRODUCTION: Worldwide, one in six individuals live with a disability. Many people continue to experience disabling situations, particularly when travelling. Travel can be an important part of the lives of many people, including people with disabilities. Barriers to accessing air travel can lead to a reluctance to travel for these potential passengers. As early as the flight planning stage, options to facilitate accessibility are limited. At airports, passengers must travel long distances in areas where navigation is complex, and accessibility limited. Furthermore, few aircraft are accessible

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been widespread conversations about the origins of the virus and who to blame for it. This article focuses on the online hate directed at Chinese and Asian people during the pandemic. Taking a critical discursive psychological approach, we analysed seven online threads related to COVID-19 and China from two Finnish websites (Suomi24 and Ylilauta) and one US (8kun) site. We identified three discursive trends associated with dehumanising Chinese populations: 'monstrous Chinese', 'immoral Chinese' and 'China as a threat', which created diff
