Non-fermenting Gram-negative bacteria pose a considerable challenge in medical settings and are increasingly implicated in infections in these settings. Many are opportunistic pathogens that primarily affect patients with other acute or chronic health conditions. Among them, Delftia species-particularly Delftia acidovorans - have traditionally been regarded as of limited clinical relevance. However, a comprehensive literature review has identified 175 reported cases of Delftia infections, with D. acidovorans accounting the majority cases (87.4 %). Bacteraemia was the most commonly associated c

A term neonate weighing 2900 g was referred in the first week of life with complaints of abdominal distension since birth. New onset respiratory distress was noted 36 hours prior to referral. Baby required non-invasive respiratory support and intravenous antibiotics as chest X-ray was suggestive of pneumonia. Ultrasound abdomen confirmed low ano-rectal malformation treated with cut-back anoplasty. Blood culture on admission grew a rare organism Delftia acidovorans The antibiotics were tailored as per the sensitivity pattern and continued for a duration of 14 days. Respiratory distress graduall

Delftia tsuruhatensis, which was first isolated in environmental samples, was rarely associated with human infections. We report on pneumonia caused by D. tsuruhatensis in an infant who underwent cardiac surgery. Retrospective analyses detected 9 other isolates from 8 patients. D. tsuruhatensis is an emergent pathogen, at least for immunocompromised patients.

Endophthalmitis is a dreaded postoperative complication of cataract surgery. Delftia acidovorans is usually nonpathogenic and an unusual ocular pathogen. Isolated reports of delftia-associated sepsis, otitis media, endocarditis, keratitis, etc. exist in literature. We report a rare and unique case of delftia-related endophthalmitis in a 67-year-old male diagnosed 2 weeks after uneventful cataract surgery. He was treated successfully with core vitrectomy and intravitreal antibiotics. Microbiological evaluation of vitreous sample identified the causative organism as Delftia acidovorans. Post-vit

We report four cases of possible human infections with Delftia lacustris. D. lacustris isolates, which were isolated from blood cultures and bile fluid of patients with underlying diseases such as empyema, renal injury, hepatocellular carcinoma, and renal infarction, were identified using 16S rRNA gene sequencing and biochemical tests. Four D. lacustris isolates did not show the same antimicrobial susceptibility profiles and enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus-polymerase chain reaction (ERIC-PCR) patterns, indicating their non-clonality.

Delftia acidovorans is an aerobic, nonfermenting Gram-negative bacillus. It is usually a nonpathogenic environmental organism and is rarely clinically significant. Although D acidovorans infection most commonly occurs in hospitalized or immunocompromised patients, there are also several reports documenting the infection in immunocompetent patients. The present article describes a B cell lymphoblastic leukemia patient with D acidovorans pneumonia who was successfully treated with antibiotic therapy. The present report indicates that unusual pathogens may be clinically significant in both immuno

HISTORY: A 60 years old woman experienced a cat scratch 34 months ago on the left eyelid. Chronic, progredient skin lesions and headache developed. Treatments with cortisone, pimecrolimus, pregabalin and metamizole were not successful. After 24 months the patient complained of severe bulbus pain in the left eye, increased eye movement pain, and high photosensitivity. There were granulomatous papules in the area of the eye.
FINDINGS AND DIAGNOSIS: The interdisciplinary examination findings and clinical-chemical parameters were inconspicuous. A biopsy of the eyelid area revealed the detection o

Malaria control demands the development of a wide range of complementary strategies. We describe the properties of a naturally occurring, non-genetically modified symbiotic bacterium, Delftia tsuruhatensis TC1, which was isolated from mosquitoes incapable of sustaining the development of Plasmodium falciparum parasites. D. tsuruhatensis TC1 inhibits early stages of Plasmodium development and subsequent transmission by the Anopheles mosquito through secretion of a small-molecule inhibitor. We have identified this inhibitor to be the hydrophobic molecule harmane. We also found that, on mosquito

Most human pathogenic Leishmania species are zoonotic agents; therefore, sand fly-based control strategies are essential to prevent parasite circulation. Here, we used the Delftia tsuruhatensis TC1 strain, that inhibits the development of Plasmodium in mosquitoes, but in the context of Leishmania-infected sand flies. We show that D. tsuruhatensis TC1 colonizes the midgut of Phlebotomus duboscqi sand flies and impacts the development of L. major parasites, independently of the colonization timing. This phenotype is likely an indirect consequence of D. tsuruhatensis colonization, related with th

BACKGROUND: Delftia acidovorans is distributed widely in the environment and has the potential to promote the growth of plants and degrade organic pollutants. However, it is also an opportunistic pathogen for human and many reports demonstrated that D. acidovorans has strong resistance to aminoglycosides and polymyxins.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this work was to reveal the antibiotic resistance genes and pathogenic genes in a novel conditional pathogenic strain-D. acidovorans B804, which was isolated from the radiation-polluted soil from Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, China.
METHODS: The ant

A targeted sequencing and genome mining approach for delftibactin-like biosynthetic pathways revealed three distinct biosynthetic gene cluster architectures (BGC del, dlc and dlp) encoded in genomes of members of the genus Delftia. Comparative metabolomic analysis guided the isolation and characterization of a yet unreported metallophore, delftichelin A from Delftia deserti DSM1621 (previously named Delftia acidovorans DSM1621). Prediction of BGC architecture and A domain specificity was in line with the structure analysis uncovering previously unreported differences in amino acid composition

A novel uricase (urate oxidase; EC 1.7.3.3), produced in the absence of uric acid induction, was isolated and characterized from the bacterial strain IICT-RSP4 and identified through 16S rRNA sequencing and whole-genome analysis. Among the tested conditions, dextrose and urea were found to be the most effective carbon and nitrogen sources, respectively, for enhanced uricase production. Enzyme purification was performed via ammonium sulfate precipitation followed by size-exclusion chromatography coupled with Fast Protein Liquid Chromatography (FPLC). Molecular characterization of enzyme was per

Delftia tsuruhatensis is a gram-negative, aerobic bacterium mostly known as an organic pollutant degrading and growth-promoting microorganism. However, it recently emerged as an opportunistic human pathogen. To date, the source of D. tsuruhatensis infection is not clear. The majority of studies of D. tsuruhatensis have focused on environmental or clinical strains, while investigations of D. tsuruhatensis strains isolated from food sources are limited. In the present study, we report the case of D. tsuruhatensis isolation from raw bovine milk. Classical bacteriology approaches, as well as next-

Delftia acidovorans (D. acidovorans) is an aerobic, nonfermentative Gram-negative bacillus infrequently isolated from clinical specimens. The pathogenicity and clinical significance of the organism has not been ascertained due to uncommon clinical isolation and suspected low virulence. The organism has been reported to be inherently resistant to aminoglycoside group of drugs which remain as a widely used first-line drug of choice for febrile neutropenic patients. Hereby, we report a case of D. acidovorans-associated pleural effusion in a patient of metastatic adenocarcinoma diagnosed and treat

BACKGROUND: In recent years, Delftia acidovorans has gained attention for its rare occurrence in patient infections. The literature consists mostly of case reports, necessitating further research to comprehensively understand risk factors, clinical characteristics, and management strategies.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study involving patients diagnosed with Delftia acidovorans infection at a tertiary teaching hospital between January 2014 and December 2022. The data included demographic details, comorbidities, bacterial cultures, antibiotic susceptibility, and treatment outc

Delftia has been separated from freshwater, sludge, and soil and has emerged as a novel opportunistic pathogen in the female vagina. However, the genomic characteristics, pathogenicity, and biotechnological properties still need to be comprehensively investigated. In this study, a Delftia strain was isolated from the vaginal discharge of a 43-year-old female with histologically confirmed cervical intraepithelial neoplasm (CIN III), followed by whole-genome sequencing. Phylogenetic analysis and average nucleotide identity (ANI) analysis demonstrated that it belongs to Delftia lacustris, named D

An 11-year-old girl with metastatic neuroblastoma developed recurrent bacteremia during sustained neutropenia after autologous peripheral blood transplantation. All febrile episodes of bacteremia were caused by single Delftia acidovorans strain revealed by ERIC-PCR. This strain became resistant to broad-spectrum penicillins and cephalosporins through antibiotic treatments. Removal of the indwelling vascular catheter resulted in resolution of the infection. So far as we know, this is the first report of vascular catheter-related D. acidovorans bacteremia in Japan.

We report the first case of recurrent intravascular-catheter-related bacteremia in a pediatric hemodialysis patient caused by Delftia acidovorans, previously called Comamonas acidovorans or Pseudomonas acidovorans. The patient had a history of multiple infections of central vascular catheters with other organisms, requiring courses of antibiotics and catheter replacements. Previously reported cases of D. acidovorans infections are reviewed. The isolate appeared to become resistant to cephalosporins after antibiotic treatment, but resistance could not be confirmed with additional testing. In vi

PURPOSE: Multi-species biofilms associated with contact lens cases and lenses can predispose individuals to contact lens-related inflammatory complications. Our study used culture-independent methods to assess the relationship between the severity of contact lens-related disease and bacteria residing in biofilms of contact lens cases and lenses.
METHODS: Contact lens cases and lenses from 28 patients referred to the West Virginia University Eye Institute and diagnosed as having mild keratitis, keratitis with focal infiltrates, or corneal ulcers were processed and evaluated for bacterial compo
