Cysticercosis of deltoid muscle.

Cysticercosis is a disease caused by tapeworm Taenia solium. It is commonly found in developing countries, but reports of its frequent occurrences even in developed countries due to immigrants from infected areas are widely reported. When cysticercosis affects the brain, the condition is commonly called neurocysticercosis however, sporadic cases of solitary intramuscular cysticercosis have been reported in the literature. We present a case of solitary cysticercosis in the right deltoid muscle in a 25-year-old woman who presented with a painful swelling on the right shoulder. The diagnosis was

Deltoid muscle abduction contracture.

A child with an abduction contracture of the left shoulder secondary to diffuse fibrosis of the deltoid muscle was successfully treated by recession of the inserting muscle fibers proximally. Previously reported cases of deltoid muscle contracture were secondary to fibrous cords or nodules within the muscle. This patient's contracture may be related to either a brachial plexus birth injury or may be similar to the idiopathic fibrosis seen in the quadriceps muscle.

The deltoid, a forgotten muscle of the shoulder.

The deltoid is a fascinating muscle with a significant role in shoulder function. It is comprised of three distinct portions (anterior or clavicular, middle or acromial, and posterior or spinal) and acts mainly as an abductor of the shoulder and stabilizer of the humeral head. Deltoid tears are not infrequently associated with large or massive rotator cuff tears and may further jeopardize shoulder function. A variety of other pathologies may affect the deltoid muscle including enthesitis, calcific tendinitis, myositis, infection, tumors, and chronic avulsion injury. Contracture of the deltoid

Anatomy of the deltoid muscle trigger points.

BACKGROUND: Myofascial Pain Syndrome (MPS) is regarded as an extremely common clinical disorder, but is not fully understood. Shoulder pain has a lifetime prevalence of up to 66.7% in the general population, and pain due to Myofascial Trigger Points (MTPs) located in the deltoid muscle is fairly common. Analyses of the correlations between innervation patterns and trigger point locations have been successful in other muscular groups. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to provide a mathematical analysis of the entry points of the axillary nerve into the deltoid muscle and correlate the

Congenital neuroblastoma arising in the deltoid muscle.

Neuroblastoma almost always arises in association with sympathetic neural crest tissues that flank the spinal axis, including the paravertebral sympathetic ganglia of the neck, mediastinum, retroperitoneum, and pelvis, or in the adrenal glands. Neuroblastoma in the newborn period, which can present as localized or metastatic disease, often resolves spontaneously and requires little or no therapy. The authors describe a 5-week-old infant with an isolated primary neuroblastoma arising in the deltoid muscle. Histologic and biologic characteristics were consistent with a favorable-prognosis stage

The deltoid muscle and the pattern of paresis in ALS.

There is neuroanatomical and clinical evidence that the corticospinal tract governs the patterns of pareses in sporadic ALS. These patterns are mirrored by phylogenetically young monosynaptic corticomotor neuronal connections. It is well known that, clinically, dysfunction of the deltoid muscle contributes considerably to the early disability of the ALS patient. In this study, we prospectively compared the degree of pareses of the deltoid muscle with the triceps and biceps brachii in N = 71 patients (426 muscles). We could show that the extent of involvement of the deltoid muscle early in the

Primer hydatid cyst of the deltoid muscle.

A primary intramuscular hydatid cyst should be considered for the differential diagnosis of cystic soft tissue masses especially in endemic areas, although primary muscular hydatidosis is a rare clinical entity. A case of a 48-year-old male patient with a primary intramuscular hydatid cyst located in the deltoid muscle is reported.

Deltoid muscle in patients with polymyalgia rheumatica.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate muscle tissue in patients with polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR). METHODS: Deltoid muscle biopsies obtained from 10 female patients with PMR before corticosteroid therapy and from 5 healthy female controls of similar age were studied using light microscopy. Serial cryosections were stained for the activity of myofibrillar ATPases at various pH and for oxidative and glycolytic enzymes. Sections were also incubated with antibodies against different myosin heavy chain (MyHC) isoforms, and the laminin alpha1 chain, identifying capillaries and cell borders, and against ligands

Chronic intramuscular calcific tendinitis of the deltoid muscle.

Calcific tendinitis is a potentially symptomatic disorder characterized by calcium deposits in the substance of the tendon. Although this condition can occur in any tendinous tissue throughout the human body, calcium deposition commonly occurs at tendon insertions near the bone-tendon junction. The musculotendinous junction of the deltoid muscle has peculiarly dense intramuscular tendons to which muscle fibers attach obliquely to create muscular strength. Given that the intramuscular tendons themselves, which form the consecutive part from the insertion, are subjected to unpredictable stress l

Mapping the axillary nerve within the deltoid muscle.

Reports place the frequency of axillary nerve injury at 6% for all brachial plexus injuries, emphasizing the importance of an accurate anatomic description of this nerve within the deltoid in order to reduce iatrogenic injury. The aim of the present study was to explore the anatomic variations of the axillary nerve within the deltoid muscle. Fifty human cadavers were dissected, resulting in 100 nerve specimens. The anterior and posterior branches of the axillary nerve were identified and their length measured from their point of origin (split from the axillary nerve) to their termination in th

Calcification of the Anterior Acromial Insertion of the Deltoid Muscle.

A 45-year-old man presented with severe left shoulder pain that was not associated with trauma. Plain radiography with the arm in an elevated position and ultrasonography demonstrated calcium deposits at the anterior acromial insertion site of left deltoid muscle. Conservative management could successfully relieve pain. At the 3-year follow-up, the calcification completely disappeared. To the best of our knowledge, calcium deposits at the acromial insertion site of the deltoid have not been reported in the literature. Clinicians who suspect calcific tendinitis but do not observe calcification

Anatomy and Deficiency of the Deltoid Muscle: A Review of Literature.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: The deltoid muscle is impacted by common injuries and clinical procedures. This study aims to summarize the anatomy, injuries, and clinical considerations involving the deltoid muscle. METHOD: A literature search was performed using PubMed and Google Scholar using keywords that focused on the deltoid muscle in the shoulder. Primary research articles and appropriate summary articles were selected for review. RESULTS: Reduced deltoid muscle function can be caused by axillary nerve injury, rupture of the deltoid itself, or iatrogenic damage to the muscle. The deltoid muscl

Contracture of the deltoid muscle. Results of distal release.

We prospectively studied the results of distal release, performed between February 1989 and December 1994 for the treatment of a contracture of the deltoid muscle, in forty patients (forty-nine shoulders). Forty-seven contractures (in thirty-eight patients) developed after multiple intramuscular injections of various medications. The two remaining contractures (in two patients) were congenital. The average age at the onset of the symptoms was thirty-two years (range, birth to fifty-eight years). The primary symptoms included pain around the neck and the shoulder girdle, dimpling of the skin, a

Limb function after excision of a deltoid muscle sarcoma.

BACKGROUND: Limb function after excision of deltoid muscle sarcomas has not been thoroughly investigated, although a large defect of soft tissue often causes some degree of dysfunction after wide excision. We formulated a hypothesis that the limb functional results depend on the volume of the excised deltoid muscle and examined the clinical outcomes in patients with a sarcoma in the deltoid muscle treated by surgical resection. METHODS: The clinical outcomes of 8 patients with a malignant soft tissue tumor in the deltoid muscle were retrospectively reviewed. The following items were evaluated

The deltoid muscle flap: anatomical studies and case reports.

Anatomical studies of the deltoid muscle were performed on 16 cadaver shoulders. The anatomy of the axillary nerve, the vascular pedicles, and the musculocutaneous perforators was assessed. These studies confirmed that part of the deltoid muscle can be used as a vascularised flap to cover defects of the shoulder while leaving some viable functioning muscle intact. We report the use of hemideltoid flaps to treat chronic radionecrotic ulcers involving the shoulders of two patients. In the first, the posterior part of the muscle was used as a local muscle flap. In the second, the anterior part of

Anatomic variations of the deltoid muscle insertion: a cadaveric study.

BACKGROUND: The deltoid is a trisegmented muscle with anterior, middle, and posterior components. While the clinical relevance of the presence of anatomic variations of the deltoid origin and insertion continues to be debated, the architecture of the deltoid muscle is more complex than initially believed. This study aimed to evaluate the gross anatomy of the deltoid muscle insertion by qualitatively and quantitatively characterizing the insertion and location of the deltoid muscle's anterior, middle, and posterior components. This information is valuable to surgeons as it raises awareness of p

Surgical anatomy of the axillary nerve branches to the deltoid muscle.

Variations in the innervation of the posterior deltoid muscle by the anterior branch of the axillary nerve have been reported. The objective of this study is to clarify the anatomy of the axillary nerve branches to the deltoid muscle. One hundred and twenty-nine arms (68 right and 61 left) from 88 embalmed cadavers (83 male and 46 female) were included in the study. The anterior and posterior branches of the axillary nerve were identified and their lengths were measured from the point of emergence from the axillary nerve to their terminations in the deltoid muscle.
