BACKGROUND: This study focused on the phenomenon of demoralization, an experience of emotional distress frequently observed in patients with severe chronic illnesses, particularly those with cancer.
OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study were to adapt a standard instrument for assessing demoralization - the Demoralization Scale I (DS-I) - into French and to examine its content validity.
METHODS: First, we developed a French version of the Demoralization Scale I through forward and backward translation procedures. Second, we conducted a qualitative thematic study based on cognitive interviews wit

Demoralization, a normal response to adversity, is commonly seen in medical and surgical patients referred for psychiatric consultation. Demoralization should be distinguished from adjustment disorders and other pathological conditions--a process that would be facilitated if demoralization, like grief, were given a V code in DSM. Although the primary responsibility for treating demoralization rests with the patient's physician, the consulting psychiatrist must make an accurate diagnosis and begin the process of supportive psychotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Life-threatening conditions such as cancer can evoke demoralization, which is characterized by feelings of meaninglessness, hopelessness, and helplessness. Assessing demoralization in cancer patients is crucial. This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the Demoralization Scale-II (TDS-II) and explore its relationship with sociodemographic and disease-related factors.
METHODS: This study included 287 cancer patients, 265 of whom completed the final analysis. The participants completed the TDS-II, the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9),

BACKGROUND: Demoralization is a pervasive yet under-recognized syndrome that manifests as profound hopelessness, helplessness, loss of motivation and purpose, and impaired coping capacity. Affecting over one-third of individuals in medical and neurological settings and 20-30% of the general population, demoralization is frequently misclassified as depression. However, its distinct phenomenology necessitates precise differentiation, particularly in Parkinson's disease (PD), where it can profoundly impact quality of life (QoL), social engagement, and treatment adherence, potentially contributing

BACKGROUND: Demoralization is a complex construct comprising of several clinical phenomena that has gained increasing interest in clinical practice and research; however, the concept needs to be sufficiently specified and clearly described. A concept analysis of demoralization is necessary to integrate previous research findings and establish the scientific foundation for future intervention research.
AIM: To analyze the concept of demoralization in terms of its antecedents, attributes, consequences, and empirical referents in health.
METHODS: A concept analysis was performed using the Joann

This study examined whether reductions in the severity of personality disorders (PD) mainly reflect changes in personality traits or rather an alleviation of a demoralized state involving nonspecific unpleasant affect. We used 4 years of longitudinal data from the Collaborative Longitudinal Personality Disorders Study, in which patients (N = 419) completed the Neuroticism-Extraversion-Openness Personality Inventory-Revised (NEO-PI-R) three times over 4 years (at baseline and at 6-month and 4-year follow-up assessments). We compared the NEO Demoralization scale with NEO-PI-R domain scales adjus

The purpose of the present study was to investigate differences in demoralization between those who live in single-person households and those who live in households with others in a random sample of 8,634 urban adults. Responses to the 26-item Psychiatric Epidemiologic Research Interview did not substantiate that adults who live alone are more likely to be demoralized than those who live with others, until age and gender are considered. Men who live alone scored higher on demoralization than men who live with others, yet women who live with others scored higher on demoralization than those wh

BACKGROUND: Some research suggests that higher levels of depression and anxiety-related symptoms at intake are associated with premature termination from psychotherapy, but findings are mixed. However, theoretical and measurement considerations - introduced by a common mood factor - might complicate literature synthesis. Tellegen (1985) demonstrated that demoralization causes multicollinearity between measures of depression and anxiety, and other lines of research have converged to indicate that this construct is an important non-specific factor to consider when assessing mood pathology.

Major depression and demoralization are very common in patients with cancer. A discussion of the diagnostic specificity of major depression and demoralization (also known as adjustment disorder) is presented here, followed by a review of some effects of comorbid depression and cancer. Finally, there are a brief review of studies of antidepressant pharmacotherapy in cancer patients, a treatment algorithm for antidepressant therapy, and suggestions for treatment of demoralization.

BACKGROUND: Demoralization is a maladaptive coping response to stressful situations, characterized by thoughts of hopelessness, helplessness, and loss of meaning and purpose. Demoralization is clinically measurable using the Demoralization Scale 2 (DS-II). Pancreatic cancer (PC) patients, who carry a notoriously poor prognosis, are hypothesized to be at higher risk of demoralization.
AIMS: This study uses the DS-II to gauge the impact of demoralization in PC patients compared to a heterogenous cancer population and establish its relation to depression.
METHODS: Patients completed the DS-II,

BACKGROUND: Demoralization, as assessed through the Diagnostic Criteria for Psychosomatic Research-Demoralization (DCPR/D) interview or the Demoralization Scale (DS), has been found to affect about 30% of patients with medical disorders, while few studies have been done in patients with psychiatric disorders.
METHODS: A convenience sample of 377 patients with ICD-10 diagnoses of mood, anxiety, stress-related disorders or other non-psychotic disorders was recruited from two Italian university psychiatry centers. The DCPR/D interview and the Italian version of the DS (DS-IT) were used to assess

BACKGROUND: Demoralization refers to a state in which there is a perceived inability to cope, that is associated with a sense of disheartenment and a loss of hope and meaning. This study investigated the co-occurrence versus independence of demoralization with mental disorders and suicidal ideation to evaluate its features as a concept of distress in the context of severe illness.
METHODS: In a cross-sectional sample of 430 mixed cancer patients, we assessed demoralization with the Demoralization Scale (DS); the 4-week prevalence of mood, anxiety, and adjustment disorders and suicidal ideatio
