Axons, dendrites and synapses.

Classical concepts of neuronal organization have been based on the motoneuron as a model. Recent work on the mitral cell of the olfactory bulb has revealed synaptic connections of dendrites and cell bodies that are not present in the motoneuron. Similar findings in many other parts of the nervous system suggest the need to revise our concept of synaptic relations and functions properties of axons and dendrites.--SHEPHERD, G. M. Strong and brittle lithium dendrites.

The growth and penetration of lithium dendrites through electrolytes and separators remain key challenges to realizing high-energy density lithium-metal batteries. Using mechanically strong electrolytes and separators has been considered a promising strategy based on the commonly believed softness of lithium. However, dendrite formation persists in stiff solid electrolytes, suggesting distinct mechanical behaviors. We measured the mechanical properties of individual lithium dendrites using an air-free protocol. We found that lithium dendrites are unexpectedly strong and brittle, with fracture

Vectorized instructive signals in cortical dendrites.

Vectorization of teaching signals is a key element of almost all modern machine learning algorithms, including backpropagation, target propagation and reinforcement learning. Vectorization allows a scalable and computationally efficient solution to the credit assignment problem by tailoring instructive signals to individual neurons. Recent theoretical models have suggested that neural circuits could implement single-phase vectorized learning at the cellular level by processing feedforward and feedback information streams in separate dendritic compartments1-5. This presents a compelling, but un

Mitral cell dendrites: a comparative approach.

Phylogenetically persistent structures such as the mitral cells of the vertebrate olfactory bulb undergo changes in their dendritic arbor in the course of evolution. The morphology of mitral cells and the main elements of the olfactory bulb circuit in all classes of vertebrates are reviewed in this paper. Most of the neuronal elements found in the mammalian olfactory bulb are present in anamniotes. However, in contrast to those of amniotes, the mitral cells of most anamniotes lack basal dendrites, and periglomerular cells are absent in fish. This suggests a different circuitry and therefore dr

Electroresponsive properties of dendrites in central neurons.

A brief sketch of the historic development of the concept of neuronal integration is given. Some of the properties of dendritic spikes in chromatolyzed motoneurons, alligator Purkinje cells, and fish oculomotor neurons are reviewed, as well as the various ways in which the generation of dendritic spikes has altered our basic concept of neuronal integration. The principles of dendritic inhibition are elaborated, both as a "tonic modulatory action" and as a "functional amputating system" for dendrites that generate spikes.

Diversity of potassium channels in neuronal dendrites.

Complex computations in the nervous system begin with electrical signals generated in single neurons. Such signals include action potentials mediated by the opening of voltage-dependent ion channels, and synaptic potentials arising from neurotransmitter receptor activation. The amplitude, waveform, and propagation of action potentials and synaptic potentials influence cellular signaling in profound ways, and are largely determined by activities of ion channels in the cell membrane. The location and properties of ion channels therefore play critical roles in shaping electrical signaling in the

Neurons and their dendrites in frontotemporal dementia.

Regional and areal patterns of cell vulnerability (manifested as cell death and neuron loss) and cell sensitivity (as revealed by the presence of intracytoplasmic inclusions) are described in patients with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and FTD+ motor neuron disease (MND). This is followed by studies geared to learning about possible mechanisms involved in selective neuron loss and studies focused on recognizing the identity of vulnerable populations of local-circuit neurons and the impact of FTD on individual cells as well as on postsynaptic and presynaptic terminals in the frontal cortex. Soft-template synthesis of single-crystalline CdS dendrites.

The single-crystalline CdS dendrites have been fabricated from the reaction of CdCl2 and thiourea at 180 degrees C, in which glycine was employed as a soft template. The obtained products were explored by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and selected area electronic diffraction. The optical properties of CdS dendrites have been investigated by ultraviolet and visible light (UV-vis) and photoluminescence techniques. The investigations indicated that the dendrites were grown due to the anisotropic properties enhanced by the use of Glycine in the

Artificial sparse neuron dendrites for visual information inference.

In the human brain, dendrites exhibit nonlinear integration and sparse parallel processing capabilities, which can effectively perform visual tasks by integrating only a small subset of neuronal signals and play a crucial role in high-level information inference. However, conventional neuromorphic devices often ignore these important properties and require all neurons to perceive complete information. This makes it difficult to effectively replicate the efficient spatiotemporal processing capabilities of biological neuron dendrites. In this study, we present an artificial neuron dendrite array

Transmitter-evoked local calcium release stabilizes developing dendrites.

In the central nervous system, dendritic arborizations of neurons undergo dynamic structural remodelling during development. Processes are elaborated, maintained or eliminated to attain the adult pattern of synaptic connections. Although neuronal activity influences this remodelling, it is not known how activity exerts its effects. Here we show that neurotransmission-evoked calcium (Ca(2+)) release from intracellular stores stabilizes dendrites during the period of synapse formation. Using a ballistic labelling method to load cells with Ca(2+) indicator dyes, we simultaneously monitored dendri

Pathology of dendrites in subacute spongiform virus encephalopathies.

The spongiform changes in the cerebral cortex of scrapie mice and of chimpanzees afflicted with experimental kuru and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease were examined by electron microscopy. The pathognomonic findings consisted of swelling and vacuolation of neurons, particularly of dendrites. Fusion of swollen cells and processes occurred. The changes were associated with alterations of plasma membranes. Curled fragments of membranes accumulated at points of cell fusion and at the margin of vacuoles within dendrites. The abnormal membranes were wider and more osmiophilic than normal plasma membranes.

Demonstration that sublinear dendrites enable linearly non-separable computations.

Theory predicts that nonlinear summation of synaptic potentials within dendrites allows neurons to perform linearly non-separable computations (LNSCs). Using Boolean analysis approaches, we predicted that both supralinear and sublinear synaptic summation could allow single neurons to implement a type of LNSC, the feature binding problem (FBP), which does not require inhibition contrary to the exclusive-or function (XOR). Notably, sublinear dendritic operations enable LNSCs when scattered synaptic activation generates increased somatic spike output. However, experimental demonstrations of scatt

Stimulus-related changes in the dendrites of magnocellular neurones.

A Golgi-Cox study was undertaken to determine whether enhanced electrical activity was associated with any morphological changes in the dendrites of the magnocellular neurones in the hypothalamic supraoptic nucleus. Brattleboro rats, animals dehydrated by administration of 2% sodium chloride solution instead of drinking water and animals given 1% sodium chloride solution and deoxycortone to induce vasopressin-dependent hypertension were compared with controls. In each of the stimulated groups, the cell bodies were hypertrophied implying that the stimuli were effective. Dendritic span (the area

Developmental changes in spinal motoneuron dendrites in neonatal mice.

We examined the age-dependent morphological changes of lumbar spinal motoneurons (MNs) in neonatal Swiss-Webster mice during the first 2 weeks of postnatal life. Neurons labeled by intracellular injection of biocytin in hemisected lumbosacral spinal cords in vitro were reconstructed from serial sections. Digitized data were compared for young (P3; postnatal days 2-4; n = 9) and older animals (P11; postnatal days 10-13; n = 8). As expected, measures of dendritic size (e.g., stem branch diameter, total surface area, maximum distance to tips, and lateral tree spread) were all significantly greate

Microstructured cystine dendrites-based impedimetric sensor for nucleic acid detection.

We report results of the studies relating to the fabrication and characterization of novel biosensing electrode by covalent immobilization of DNA onto microstructural cystine (Cys) prepared by acoustic cavitation method. The TEM investigations of these structures reveal transformation of microstructured Cys from nanorods to dendritic structure under optimum conditions. The Cys dendrites (denCys) have been investigated by XRD, FT-IR, and SEM studies. These biosensing electrodes have been fabricated by immobilization of Escherichia coli (E. coli)-specific DNA probe onto the dendritic cystine. Th

Bunina bodies in dendrites of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

We studied the brains of two cases of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis with dementia. Bunina bodies were found in the motor neurons of cranial nerve nuclei (trigeminal, facial and hypoglossal nerves) as well as in the spinal motoneurons. They appeared mostly in the cytoplasm and occasionally in the neuronal processes. However, the present electron microscopic study disclosed clearly that Bunina bodies were present not only in the cell body but also in the dendrites. No Bunina bodies were observed in the axons. It is inferred that the Bunina bodies were degenerative products formed as a result of

Mitochondrial abnormalities in cortical dendrites from patients with Alzheimer's disease.

Apparently normal dendrites from the frontal cortex of 7 patients with Alzheimer's disease showed mitochondria with increased density matrices and paracrystalline inclusions in the intercristal space. Most of the inclusions were formed by parallel laminae, while others presented a polyhedric arrangement. Deposits of electron-dense flocculent material were also seen. These abnormal mitochondria appeared in areas of the cortex where dendritic degeneration was more intense. These results, together with identical observations made in the cortex of patients with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis,

[Changes in the cortical neuronal dendrites in experimental alcoholic intoxication].

The state of the cortical neuron dendrites was studied in rats at various stages of alcohol intoxication; two categories of changes occurred in dendrites--destructive and compensatory. These changes depended on the stages of alcohol intoxication and individual peculiarities of the central nervous system of the animals.

CTCF loss induces giant lamellar bodies in Purkinje cell dendrites.

CCCTC-binding factor (CTCF) has a key role in higher-order chromatin architecture that is important for establishing and maintaining cell identity by controlling gene expression. In the mature cerebellum, CTCF is highly expressed in Purkinje cells (PCs) as compared with other cerebellar neurons. The cerebellum plays an important role in motor function by regulating PCs, which are the sole output neurons, and defects in PCs cause motor dysfunction. However, the role of CTCF in PCs has not yet been explored. Here we found that the absence of CTCF in mouse PCs led to progressive motor dysfunction
