Biocompatibility of dental casting alloys.

Most cast dental restorations are made from alloys or commercially pure titanium (cpTi). Many orthodontic appliances are also fabricated from metallic materials. It has been documented in vitro and in vivo that metallic dental devices release metal ions, mainly due to corrosion. Those metallic components may be locally and systemically distributed and could play a role in the etiology of oral and systemic pathological conditions. The quality and quantity of the released cations depend upon the type of alloy and various corrosion parameters. No general correlation has been observed between allo

Dental gold alloys and contact allergy.

Contact allergy to gold as demonstrated by patch testing is very common among patients with eczematous disease and seems to be even more frequent among patients with complaints from the oral cavity. There is a positive correlation between gold allergy and the presence of dental gold. Gold allergy is often found in patients with non-specific stomatitides as well as in those with lichenoid reactions or with only subjective symptoms from the oral cavity. The therapeutic effect of substituting other dental materials for gold alloys is conspicuous in casuistic reports but less impressive in larger

[Cytocompatibility of dental alloys containing palladium].

The cytoxicity and the 50% lethal concentration (LC50) has been assessed in vitro by the colony forming method in extracts of 5 precious or semiprecious alloys and of oxides and chlorides of the metal contained in these alloys: Pd, Ag, Cu, Zn, Sn, In and Ga. All alloy extracts in culture medium induced cell death depending on their composition. In, Ga and Sn compounds showed the most favorable cell viability, Cu and Ag salts induced the lowest survival rate.

Allergy to nickel in dental alloys.

A case of oral allergy to dental alloys is presented, highlighting the interest of dosage of salivary nickel and of flow cytometry showing a selective CD4+ activation. The discrepancy between the rarity of oral allergy to dental alloys and the frequency of nickel sensitization and nickel-induced contact dermatitis leads to discuss the mechanisms of oral tolerance.

Dental gold alloys and contact hypersensitivity.

A total of 172 patients referred to the Norwegian National Adverse Reaction Group were patch-tested with a dental series. Of these, 25% showed a positive reaction to gold sodium thiosulfate or potassium dicyanoaurate. There was a statistically significant correlation (p=0.0019) between the presence of dental gold and a positive patch test to gold. There was a statistically significant correlation between ear piercing and a positive patch test to gold (p=0.04). In most cases, we did not find clinical correlates to positive patch tests to gold. 2 patients with objective and subjective oral/perio

Contact dermatitis from beryllium in dental alloys.

An increasing number of metals with the potential to cause allergic contact dermatitis have found their way into dental alloys for economic and practical reasons. 2 patients are reported who developed gingivitis adjacent to the Rexillium III alloy in their dental prostheses. Patch testing demonstrated positive reactions to beryllium sulfate, a component of the alloy. Components of dental alloys and the mechanism of the contact dermatitis are discussed.

[Non-precious metal dental alloys and allergy].

The fundamental basis of allergy, particularly in relation to contact allergy, is described, together with the importance and frequency of sensitization to nickel, chromium and cobalt in both the consultant and general population. 139 published cases of allergy to dental restorations containing these metals are reviewed involving 92 female and 47 male patients, 115 of whom recovered when the restorations were removed. The most frequent symptoms were local (99/139), particularly gingivitis and stomatitis, while general or remote symptoms occurred in 33 cases. This probably underestimates the tr

Biological interactions of dental cast alloys with oral tissues.

OBJECTIVE: All dental cast alloys release metal ions into the oral environment which have the potential to interact with the oral tissues. Amount and type of metal elements released are varying and not directly related to the composition of the alloy. The aim of the present literature survey was to describe the interactions of dental cast alloys with living tissues and to relate them to clinically adverse local reactions of the oral tissues. RESULTS: Interactions of dental cast alloys with the oral tissues take place by different mechanisms; e.g. bacterial adherence promotion, toxic and subto

Palladium in dental alloys--the dermatologists' responsibility to warn?

Palladium is increasingly used in industry, but also in fine jewelry and in dentistry. Thus, palladium-silver alloys comprise a substantial part of the noble metal ceramic alloy sales in Western countries. The increased use of this metal seems, however, to be paralleled by a rise in the number of reports of palladium allergy. Recently a European study reported a sensitization rate of 2.8%. In Austria, where palladium has started to displace amalgam in dental fillings because of concerns about mercury toxicity, and gold due to price factors, we have found a sensitization rate of 8.3% in unselec

The prevalence of sensitivity to constituents of dental alloys.

Ninety-five participants were epicutaneous patch tested in order to determine the prevalence of sensitivity to components of dental alloys. Seventeen individuals (17.9%) developed allergic reactions, which were caused by mercury (10.5%), copper (2.1%), nickel, cobalt, tin, gold and zinc (1.1%). Eight of 17 allergic responders had a history of dermatitis from metal contact. The results show that there is a need for careful immunological considerations during the selection of suitable alloys, particularly in the case of patients with lesions suspected of being caused by dental alloys.

In vitro bonding of prosthodontic adhesives to dental alloys.

In vitro tensile bond strengths were determined for three adhesive cements and two resin-bonded bridge cements to two alloys, each prepared by two methods: sandblasted Ni-Cr-Be alloy (I), electro-etched Ni-Cr-Be alloy (II), sandblasted Type IV gold alloy (III), and tin-plated Type IV gold alloy (IV). Storage conditions of 24 hours at 37 degrees C and 30 days at 70 degrees C were evaluated. The highest bond strengths were obtained for the electro-etched Ni-Cr-Be alloy, and all bond failures were cohesive. At both 24 hours and 30 days, the adhesive cements had the highest bond strengths to the o

ESCA study on dental alloy surfaces modified by Ga-Sn alloy.

A new, simple surface modification method for adherend metals has been developed. It gives high bond strength and superior water durability to dental precious-metal alloys bonded with 4-META/MMA-TBB resin. However, there was no effect on the bonding of Ag-In-Zn alloy and base-metal alloys. In the present study, the alloy surfaces modified by the new method were analyzed by ESCA and SEM for determination of details of the modification effect. A new alloying layer containing Ga and Sn was formed on the precious-metal alloys. The main factor for excellent adhesion to be achieved was the formation

Contact stomatitis due to palladium and platinum in dental alloys.

We report a patient with contact stomatitis due to combined sensitization to palladium and platinum. Patch testing showed strong and persistent allergic patch test reactions to palladium chloride (1% pet.), ammonium tetrachloroplatinate (0.25% pet.), and a palladium metal plate. A platinum metal plate showed a weaker reaction. Histological examination of a biopsy from the test site of palladium chloride (1% pet.) at D3 showed both eczematous and lichenoid changes.

Evaluation of tissue response to dental alloys by subcutaneous implantation.

The tissue response of two low-gold alloys (Midas and Rajah), two silver-palladium alloys (Albacast and Alba V), and one type III gold alloy (JSC) was studied after subcutaneous implantation of cylindrical implants in 24 guinea pigs. Casting of each alloy were inserted into polyethylene tubes and implanted by means of a standardized technique. Each animal received five implants representing the five alloys. The implants were left in place for 30 and 90 days. Microscopic evaluation of the implant sites showed that after 30 days the tissue reactions were slight to moderate, with only small diffe

[The effect of recasting on microstructure of dental ceramic alloys].

PURPOSE: To investigate the effects of recasting on metallographic microstructure of cobalt-chromium(Co-Cr), commercially pure titanium(cpTi), palladium-copper-gallium(Pd-Cu-Ga), aurum-platinum(Au-Pt) ceramic alloys. METHODS: Without adding new alloys, Co-Cr, cpTi, Pd-Cu-Ga and Au-Pt ceramic alloys were recasted for 1-3 times under the circumstance of vacuum compressive casting with argon. Before each recasting, these 4 ceramic alloys casted previously were treated by the most appropriate way which has been reported by our previous study. According to GB/T13298-2015 standards, the specimens o

[Mechanic-technological and metallographical studies on soldering of dental alloys].

It can be proved that the reliability of soldering is in practice not very high, as properties of solidity and the quality of compounds very greatly. This is unavoidable in spite of the most careful execution of the welding and observation of the corresponding soldering directions. Low sigmaB-values are attributable to: 1. the insufficient filling of the soldering space (ca. 80%); 2. many lacunae in the solder commissures, which partly communicate with one another; 3. small diffusion zones and poor wettability in case of the pairing of the materials Co-Cr-Mo/Au-solder.
