The relationship between dental status and dental anxiety was analysed in 165 patients. To assess the dental status, D3.4 MFS-index and Bleeding-on-Probing-Index (BOP) were applied. Dental anxiety was assessed using dental anxiety rating, whereas aspects of state and trait anxiety were analysed by the State-Trait-Anxiety Inventory. The hypothesis was: higher levels of dental anxiety lead to avoiding check-ups and necessary treatment, the consequence of which is a deterioration of the dental status. No significant correlation was found between dental anxiety and dental status. A significant dif

Anxiety disorders are the most frequently found psychiatric problem in the general population. The most common anxiety disorders are phobias, panic attack, generalized anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and acute stress disorder. Recent terrorist attacks in the U.S. have had a marked impact on the mental health status of individuals directly affected by the attacks as well as those who were far from the scenes of destruction. To provide effective dental care, the dentist must be able to identify anxious patients and deal with their anxiety. This process may involve referring the

Dental disease is frequently accompanied by anxiety and fear of the treatment and of dentists. The etiology of any anxiety is sought in early conditioning life experiences; here it may be related to infants' responses to first teething. The universality of dental anxiety makes it a paradigm of psychosomatic disorders. These are conceptualized as pathologic exaggerated reactions to early traumatizing events, a causality not unlike that of conversive-hysteric symptoms or "normal" bodily characteristics. Psychiatric-etiologic considerations of dental anxiety are not to be found in the literature.

Although negative dental experiences are often cited as the major factor in the development of dental anxiety, very few studies have provided data on their prevalence. The studies that are available used limited samples from which it is not possible to generalise, or confined their enquiries to painful experiences only. In this paper data are provided on negative dental experiences and their relationship to dental anxiety obtained from a large, random sample of the general population. Just over three-quarters reported what are termed as direct negative experiences; 71 per cent had had experien

This article examines the etiology of dental anxiety, a common yet often overlooked condition in dental practice. Ranging from mild discomfort to severe dental phobia, dental anxiety significantly affects a patient's ability to receive necessary care. Despite its prevalence, it remains underexplored in scientific research, leading to inadequate treatment and insufficient attention. Understanding the factors behind dental anxiety is crucial for prevention and for providing effective psychotherapeutic and pharmacological interventions. The review was based on a comprehensive search of several sci

Fear and anxiety are primary reasons why individuals avoid visiting the dental practitioner. Dental anxiety appears to vary by type of treatment, with periodontic and endodontic patients reporting higher levels of anxiety than patients receiving restorative or prophylactic treatment. Parents who experience dental anxiety often pass along such feelings to their children. Front office employees are the first line in screening for anxiety-related behaviors while the patient is in the reception area. It is extremely important to recognize dental fear and anxiety before the patient receives oral ca

In this study, we aimed to find a correlation between anxiety related to dental procedures and migraines. A cross-sectional study was performed on 171 patients who attended specific dental clinics. The patients were randomly categorized into a migraine group (83) and a control group. To determine the anxiety level, all the patients filled out a validated questionnaire (the Arabic version of the Modified Dental Anxiety Scale). All responses ranged from "not anxious" (scoring 1) to "extremely anxious" (scoring 5). Based on the patient responses, the total score was recorded and compared statisti

The aim of this study was to evaluate the ability of dental clinicians to rate dental anxiety. A total of 104 clinicians from 24 public dental clinics in the Region of Östergötland, Sweden, examined 1,128 adult patients undergoing their regular dental examination. The patients rated their dental anxiety using the Modified Dental Anxiety Scale and a Visual Analogue Scale. After the examination, the clinicians rated the patients' levels of dental anxiety on a Visual Analogue Scale. The correlation (rs ) between the clinicians' and patients' ratings of dental anxiety was 0.45. Among highly dental

The purpose of this study was to determine whether adolescents with a history of childhood dental treatment using sedation had a higher level of self-reported dental anxiety than adolescents without such a history. A group of 287 adolescents were identified who had received dental treatment using an identical sedation regime during childhood (mean age 5.05 +/- 0.16 years). A cover letter and a modified Dental Anxiety Scale (DAS) were mailed to the parents of all subjects. Sixty-one subjects (n = 61, 21 males, 40 females, mean age = 14.79 +/- 0.16 years) (+/- SE) completed and returned the form

Little attention has been given to the issue of the age of onset of dental anxiety, even though it may have a bearing on the origins of this type of fear. This study aimed to identify the age of onset of dental anxiety and to identify differences by age of onset with respect to potential etiological factors, such as negative dental experiences, family history of dental anxiety, and general psychological states. Data were collected by means of two mail surveys of a random sample of the adult population. Of 1420 subjects returning questionnaires, 16.4% were dentally anxious. Half, 50.9%, reporte

In this brief review article, we suggest that the term "dental phobia" may be a misnomer. The problem with using the term "phobia" in a dental-care context is as follows: by definition, phobias involve a fear that is "excessive or unreasonable," which the individual recognizes as such, and in which the anxiety, panic attacks and phobic avoidance are not better accounted for by another disorder, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In our experience, most individuals with dental "phobia" do not recognize their symptoms as "excessive or unreasonable" and in that sense, resemble indivi

Objectives: The prevalence of "dental anxiety" (DA) is often underestimated and numerous diagnostic methods are available for dental practitioners. It is difficult to differentiate between a dental phobia requiring an interdisciplinary approach and DA, which can be managed by dental practitioners alone. The appropriate use of diagnostic tools is key for the successful management of highly anxious and/or phobic patients. The aim was to provide a guideline to recognize dental fear and to differentiate DA from patients who are highly anxious or even have a phobia. Data sources: In total, 8,929 ar

This study assessed the influence of maternal dental anxiety-related behavior on the child's caries experience. A cross-sectional study with 608 mother-child dyads during the Children's National Immunization Campaign in Pelotas, Brazil was performed. Mothers were asked to answer a questionnaire and dental examination of the children was performed (dmft). The association assessment used Poisson regression. Children from anxious mothers were more likely to present untreated caries even after covariate adjustment. Boys, older children and low-income family children presented a higher dmft mean. P

BACKGROUND: Dental anxiety, fear, and phobia are common conditions that prevent individuals from seeking dental care by delaying dental care or avoiding the visit entirely, which may cause a decline in oral health-related quality of life. Dental anxiety often has a correlation with other psychological constructs. Our aim was to examine the associations between psychological constructs, dental anxiety, and phobia and their variations among key demographics among patients seeking dental care in a dental school setting.
METHODS: Baseline data from 499 patients who participated in a randomized cl

OBJECTIVES: Dental care-related fear and anxiety, involving emotional reactions to dental situations, can negatively impact children's quality of life, oral and systemic health. Recognising maternal characteristics as key determinants of child health, this study examined the intergenerational relationship between dental fear/anxiety and early childhood dental service utilisation.
METHODS: Data were drawn from the baseline (birth), 12-month, and four-year follow-ups of the 2015 Pelotas Birth Cohort Study (Brazil). Outcomes included child dental fear/anxiety and dental service use (frequency an

Dental anxiety is one of the most common conditions present amongst the masses globally. It is this fear that makes individuals avoid seeking dental treatment which results in a deteriorated oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). Discrepancies exist in the prevalence of dental anxiety based on gender, education levels, level of deprivation of a society and its socioeconomic status. In this study, a sample size of 522 respondents was collected. Kuppuswamy's socioeconomic status scale and modified dental anxiety scales were used to collect the necessary data. These data were analyzed by c

This study investigated a screening procedure for psychologic distress in adult patients with dental phobia before treatment of dental fear. The screening procedure was performed among 191 individuals in consecutive steps and included a medical/dental history, psychologic interviewing, and testing. Data collected during this process were analyzed and compared with SCL-90(R) data. The screening process was successful in selecting individuals without major psychologic distress problems. Among the excluded patients 91% had general symptoms scores on the SCL-90(R) exceeding a normative population
