Hypersensitivity to Dental Composites and Resin-Bonding Agents.

Adverse reactions to dental materials are not an uncommon occurrence, although hypersensitivity has gained much renewed interest in light of public concerns over the safety of dental materials. Hypersensitivity can affect both patients and dental professionals and may manifest as either allergic contact dermatitis or stomatitis. Methacrylic monomers, such as MMA, EGDMA, TEGDMA and Bis-GMA, have been documented as causative allergens, however, little has been documented on the risk of such monomers in composites and bonding agents. The purpose of this article is to examine the current evidence

In vitro bonding of prosthodontic adhesives to dental alloys.

In vitro tensile bond strengths were determined for three adhesive cements and two resin-bonded bridge cements to two alloys, each prepared by two methods: sandblasted Ni-Cr-Be alloy (I), electro-etched Ni-Cr-Be alloy (II), sandblasted Type IV gold alloy (III), and tin-plated Type IV gold alloy (IV). Storage conditions of 24 hours at 37 degrees C and 30 days at 70 degrees C were evaluated. The highest bond strengths were obtained for the electro-etched Ni-Cr-Be alloy, and all bond failures were cohesive. At both 24 hours and 30 days, the adhesive cements had the highest bond strengths to the o

Current antibacterial agents in dental bonding systems: a comprehensive overview.

Dental caries is mainly caused by oral biofilm acid, and the most common dental restoration treatment is composite dental restorations. The main cause of failure is secondary caries adjacent to the restoration. Long-term survival of dental materials is improved by the presence of antibacterial agents, which selectively inhibit bacterial growth or survival. Chemical, natural and biomaterials have been studied for their antimicrobial activities and antibacterial bonding agents have been improved. Their usage has been increased to inhibit the growth of invading and residual bacteria in the oral c

[Clinical bonding strategies based on histopathological characteristics of dental fluorosis].

Dental fluorosis alters the structure and acid resistance of dental hard tissues and impairs bonding performance. For fluorotic teeth requiring direct composite resin restorations, veneers/full-crown restorations for abnormal color and morphology, as well as orthodontic bracket bonding, reliable enamel-dentin bonding remains a key clinical concern. Based on the histopathological features of hard tissues in fluorotic teeth, this paper reviews advances in clinical-bonding research and summarizes appropriate clinical bonding strategies to inform clinical diagnosis, treatment and further related r

Esthetic smile rehabilitation through autogenous bonding of dental fragment: a case report.

Autogenous tooth fragment bonding offers advantages over restorations with composite resins and porcelain, including better esthetics, greater durability, reestablishment of the natural function of the dental element and short execution time. A case is presented of a 14-year-old male patient who suffered an oblique crown fracture of the permanent right maxillary central incisor (11) due to a traumatic fall. The clinical examination revealed pulp exposure with no invasion of the biological space. Due to the extension of the fracture, endodontic treatment and the placement of an intra-root esthe

Response of the dental pulp to capping with a composite resin-bonded ceramic and dental adhesive in rat molars.

An inflammatory response occurs in the pulp tissue following the application of dental materials due to their chemical properties and/or a secondary bacterial irritation. Recently, a new line of composite resin products with reported improved esthetic qualities was designed to allow an intimate adherence with the dentin. This intense bonding could prevent bacterial penetration and marginal discoloration of these restorations. In addition, this method allows prevention of excessive removal of hard tissue. The present study examines pulpal reaction to capping with P-10 composite resin (Dental Pr

Effect of a dental unit waterline additive on resin bond strengths.

The literature indicates that the addition of an antimicrobial mouthrinse to self-contained water systems in dental units will control biofilm and effluent contamination; however, reports have varied concerning the possible effects of such agents on adhesive dentistry bond strengths. This study evaluated shear bond strengths and the potential effects of a mouthrinse containing essential oils on cut tooth surfaces by grinding flat the buccal surface of extracted human teeth. Seven groups consisting of five teeth each were etched with 37% H3PO4 solution and rinsed with water or different dilutio

Allergic Contact Dermatitis From Dental Bonding Materials Containing Methacrylate: A Report of Two Cases.

Dental practitioners face occupational hazards, including allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) from materials like methacrylates found in dental bonding agents. ACD is a localized immune reaction causing dry skin, eczema, and sores. Despite using gloves, these chemicals can penetrate and cause skin reactions. The presented cases are of two dental practitioners who complained of signs and symptoms of ACD on the skin of their hands following regular restorative procedures. Later on, these complaints were diagnosed as ACD. The two male dentists developed ACD on the dorsal side of their hands due to
