Productivity in dental care for children. Factors influencing the time spent delivering dental care.

The cost of dental services is related to their productivity. The purpose of the study was to identify factors influencing productivity, measured as time spent providing dental care per child under care, per year, in public dental clinics. The time was expected to vary with characteristics of the patients, the personnel and the clinics. Time spent by dentists and dental hygienists delivering dental care for children aged three to 18 years was obtained from 137 public dental clinics. The data showed substantial variation in productivity between clinics. Multiple regression analysis revealed tha

Barriers to routine dental care for children with special health care needs.

PURPOSE: The aim of this mixed method study was to identify barriers for children with special health care needs (SHCN) to receiving routine preventive dental care following restorative dental care with general anesthesia (GA). Interview topics explored child, family, and community level influences to accessing routine dental care. Qualitative analysis identified key themes of barriers and enablers to care. RES

[Psycho-social aspects of dental care for the handicapped. An investigation into dental care for handicapped children living at home].

An investigation was carried out to determine those factors that play a decisive part in dental care for handicapped children living at home. Data were obtained by interviews with parents of 32 mentally retarded and cerebral palsied children, 20 attendants, 48 general dental practitioners and 19 dental hygienists in two districts in The Netherlands. The dental health of 21 children was clinically examined. Parents experienced many problems in maintenance of oral hygiene as well as in finding a dentist for their child. They perceived drooling, halitosis and oral-facial malfunctions as the most

Dental care for children fed by tube: a critical review.

No guidelines for the oral care of children fed by tube have been published. Poor oral health (unrestored caries lesions, poor oral hygiene, dependence for oral care) and tube-feeding are associated with the development of aspiration pneumonia. Children fed by tube have abundant calculus, and low caries activity. The potential for dental erosion related to gastro-esophageal reflux and oral hypersensitivity is high. To optimize oral health and reduce the risk of aspiration pneumonia, this population should receive dental care at more frequent intervals than children fed orally. Modifications to

Dental health care for children with Down syndrome: Parents' description of their children's needs in dental health care settings.

A visit to the dental clinic may be challenging for a child with Down syndrome due to medical and oral health problems as well as communication problems. The aim of the present study was to explore how parents of children with Down syndrome describe their child's needs in the dental health care setting. In a survey concerning parental experiences with dental health care in Sweden, free comments were analysed with content analysis and resulted in five categories: "Need for continuity of care in dental health care"; "Need for dental health care professionals to have knowledge and expertise in ca

Dental health and dental care in severely mentally retarded children.

Dental health of 103 children with severe mental retardation living in the north of Sweden, has been surveyed and compared with that of a control group of healthy children of normal intelligence. Data has been related to medical diagnosis, medication, type of residence and previous dental care. The children with severe mental retardation had been offered dental care to the same extent as the control children. Lack of cooperation in treatment and treatment under general anaesthesia was common among the SMR-children. The SMR-children who lived in institutions had a lower prevalence of caries tha

Dog Therapy for Dental Care Among Autistic Children: A Randomized Trial.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to assess whether the presence of a therapy dog during 2 dental care sessions could facilitate subsequent dog-free dental care for anxious autistic children who had difficulty cooperating. METHODS: We conducted a parallel-arm randomized trial: control group using usual behavioral strategies only and experimental group using animal-assisted therapy (AAT) strategies combined with usual behavioral strategies. All patients had 3 dental care sessions. In the experimental group, the therapy dog was present during the first 2 dental sessions, and the third dental session was dog-

[Evaluation of preventive dental care for first permanent molars in children].

The prevalence of dental caries in first permanent molars was measured in 220 children who have been under regular dental care at the Pediatric Dental Clinic, Tohoku University School of Dentistry. While the caries prevalence rate of first permanent molars reached approx. 50% five years after the eruption, the number of filled surfaces per restored tooth was less than 2.0. The caries prevalence of the permanent mandibular first molars was significantly higher than the caries prevalence of the permanent maxillary first molars. However, the occlusal surface showed no significant differences betw

The Swedish out-of-home care children cohort (SweOHC) - evaluation of dental health and dental care.

OBJECTIVES: Children in out-of-home care (OHC) are at greater risk of ill health than other children in the community. The aim of this registry-based cohort study was to compare the oral health and dental care needs of children in OHC with those of other children in Sweden, by merging data from different Swedish registries. A further aim was to analyse whether children in OHC received more dental examinations after 2017, following implementation of a law requiring mandatory health evaluations prior to placement. METHODS: We identified an exposed cohort of Swedish children and young people, 0-

Adverse Events During Dental Care for Children: Implications for Practitioner Health and Wellness.

Adverse events during dental care for children inevitably happen, despite precautionary procedures. Remedial measures have primarily focused upon affected children and their parents/caregivers. The purpose of this paper was to summarize the effects of adverse events upon practitioners involved in the incident who have been termed second victims. Affected practitioners may suffer negative emotions impinging upon their professional performance as well as deleterious personal health consequences, including substance abuse and depression/suicidal ideation. Peer support has been identified as an im

Dental caries prevalence and dental health care of Mexican-American workers' children.

The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of dental caries and the use of dental services in a pediatric population of Mexican-American migrant workers. The results were compared with the Mexican-American child population from the Hispanic Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (HHANES). One hundred thirty three-to-sixteen-year-old children participated in the study. The children who were born in Mexico and those who spoke Spanish had seen the dentist less often and had a higher incidence of decayed teeth than those who were born in the US and than those who spoke English (p <

Silver diamine fluoride for the management of dental caries in children in primary dental care: protocol for a feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Dental caries remains a significant problem in England, affecting 11% of 3-year-olds and 23% of 5-year-olds. While current approaches have been extensively investigated, their ability to (1) control pain and infection; (2) prevent hospital admissions, and (3) be implemented within the National Health Service (NHS) contractual arrangements, remains unsatisfactory. Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is an alternative, non-invasive approach that has proven efficacy in arresting caries progression in primary teeth, principally from studies conducted outside of Europe. Its use in primary den
