Dental caries incidence is affected by host factors that may be related to the structure of dental enamel, immunologic response to cariogenic bacteria, or the composition of saliva. Genetic variation of the host factors may contribute to increased risks for dental caries. This systematic review examined the literature to address the question, "Is the risk for dental decay related to patterns of genetic inheritance?" Numerous reports have described a potential genetic contribution to the risk for dental caries. Studies on twins have provided strong evidence for the role of inheritance. Establis

Dental caries remains the most prevalent chronic, oral biofilm-associated disease affecting majority of the globe's population in all age categories. Despite enormous and revolutionary progress in omics technologies, it´s aetiology is not fully understood. The interest of current research is primarily focused on the identification and understanding of the crosstalk between main players such as host cell genome, oral microbiome´s genome, factors of immune response, saliva content and nutrition. For accurate, multi-omix analyses, it is essential to know which patient´s genes enter into crucial i

This study evaluated the physicochemical and morphological properties of tooth enamel in patients with caries-predisposing SNPs (rs4694075 in AMBN and rs2337359 in TUFT1 genes), based on the DMFT index. We included 40 of 120 individuals (aged 19-43), collecting stimulated saliva and 58 healthy teeth extracted for orthodontic/surgical reasons. Saliva DNA was genotyped. Enamel properties were assessed using Vickers microhardness, deposition thickness, and calcium content. Genotype and allele frequencies aligned with the literature. The TUFT1C/C genotype subgroup showed a significantly higher DMF

INTRODUCTION: Genetics plays a crucial role in determining individual susceptibility to dental caries. Certain beta-defensin 1 (DEFB1) gene variants may be linked to oral diseases. One of the most prevalent problems with oral health is dental caries. Between 60% and 90% of schoolchildren and the vast majority of adults suffer from dental caries. This study aimed to examine the genetic association between the DEFB1 gene variants rs11362 and rs1799946 and dental caries in a case-control study.
METHODS: The study included 202 participants, of whom 119 demonstrated high dental caries, while 83 ac

UNLABELLED: There has been a paradigm shift in patient care with regards to delivering better oral health, towards a team-delivered, person-focused, risk-related model that is known as minimum intervention oral care (MIOC). Student skills should be developed within the undergraduate dental curricula to ensure that graduating dentists and other oral healthcare team members are able to provide phased personalised care plans alongside behavioural management support to patients/caregivers to prevent and manage oral disease in the long term. The purpose of this study is to establish that using an a

A significant role in the development of dental caries is played by a genetic predisposition, especially variations in interleukin (IL) genes that regulate the immune response and tissue permeability. Analysis of literature data confirms a significant association of interleukins (IL6, IL8, IL10, IL17, IL18) and their polymorphic variants (rs1800795/IL-6, rs1800871/IL10, IL1B/rs1143643, IL1RN/rs2234663, IL4/rs8179190) with the risk of caries, periodontitis and their complications (p<0.05). This analysis allowed us to establish the contribution of interleukins to the pathogenesis of caries. Howe

An air-powder jet abrasive system has recently been introduced for stain removal from teeth. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether its abrasive effect on enamel and on the root renders these surfaces more caries prone. The AIR-FLOW (EMS SA) abrasive was directed for 30 seconds on predetermined (test) sites of the crown and the root of each of 10 teeth, under controlled conditions. These and adjacent (control) sites in the form of windows, were then exposed to an acid gel for caries-like lesion formation. The central sections of each window were examined under the polarizing micr

Sugar-rich diets and poor dental hygiene promote the formation of a biofilm (plaque) that strongly adheres to the dental enamel surface and fosters the evolution of aciduric bacteria. The acid contributes to demineralization of the exterior tooth enamel, which accelerates after the pH drops below a critical value (∼5.5) for extended time periods resulting in the need for restorative procedures. Preventative techniques to alert the dentist and caries-susceptible patients regarding vulnerability to dental decay require a clinical measure of plaque activity. Therefore, there is a need to evaluate

OBJECTIVE: Dental caries is a multifactorial disease influenced by environmental, behavioral, and genetic factors. Recent studies suggest that variations in the AMY1 gene, which encodes salivary amylase, may contribute to caries susceptibility. This study investigates the relationship between AMY1 gene copy number variation (CNV) and dental caries in a Turkish population.
METHOD: A total of 154 participants (63% female; mean age 19.6 ± 1.4 years) were included. Epithelial cells in inner cheek tissues were collected from volunteers using swabs, and the collected samples were preserved and stor
