Micro-topography of dental enamel and root cementum.

The focus for the present study was to characterise dental enamel and cementum at the cervical region of healthy teeth by use of interferometry. The effect of a protein-dissolving enzyme, used for cleaning (Neutrase) on the surface topography, was also evaluated. Knowledge about the normal variation of surface topography of natural teeth is limited. In the design of artificial surfaces, intended to replace the function of lost biological surfaces, detailed knowledge of the latter is therefore of great importance. Nine health caries free premolars were used. The root cementum of three teeth was

[Cleidocranial dysplasia--histological findings in the dental cementum].

Up to now only very few reports on histological studies of teeth in cleidocranial dysplasia have been published. We are presenting a 12-year old boy with this syndrome. Seven of his teeth were studied microscopically. The most relevant results are as follows: acellular cementum in all teeth, almost complete missing of cellular cementum, normal intermediate cementum. The pathogenesis of the retarded eruption of teeth in this disorder is explained as a result of eburnation of the alveolar bone as well as fibrosis of the gingiva. The therapy of choice in order to stimulate eruption is a rigid ort

Incremental lines of dental cementum in biological age estimation.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the use of counting incremental lines of dental root cementum for biological age determination, and to compare it with alternative methods. Two samples were taken: 51 teeth from 49 individuals of known age obtained at the Stomatological Clinic, Vilnius University, as well as the canine teeth from the remains of 48 individuals from the mass graves of Tuskulenai in Vilnius (inhumed 1944-47). In the latter sample, the chronological age of 43 individuals was known through personal identification. Undecalcified teeth were sectioned with the Leica SP 1600 microto

Proteomic analysis of human dental cementum and alveolar bone.

UNLABELLED: Dental cementum (DC) is a bone-like tissue covering the tooth root and responsible for attaching the tooth to the alveolar bone (AB) via the periodontal ligament (PDL). Studies have unsuccessfully tried to identify factors specific to DC versus AB, in an effort to better understand DC development and regeneration. The present study aimed to use matched human DC and AB samples (n=7) to generate their proteomes for comparative analysis. Bone samples were harvested from tooth extraction sites, whereas DC samples were obtained from the apical root portion of extracted third molars. Sam

[Microstructure of dental cementum and individual biological age estimation].

Evaluation of annual incremental lines of dental cementum is one of potentially valuable methods for biological age estimation in forensic anthropology. The objective of this work was to elucidate the relation between the number of those lines and the chronological age of an individual. Material of the study consisted of undecalcified sections of 227 permanent teeth of 178 individuals (89 males, 89 females, average age 47.5 years) (3-4 of each tooth, thickness 33-35 mum). Sections were analyzed under magnification of 20-40 times, photographed and evaluated using digitalized visual analysis sys

Population differences in dental cementum growth rates: Implications for using cementum thickness as a method for age estimation.

OBJECTIVES: Age at death estimation is a key element to many research questions in biological anthropology, archeology, and forensic science. Dental cementum is a tissue of choice for the estimation of age at death in adult individuals as it continues deposition for the entirety of an individual's life. Previous works have devised regression formulas correlating cementum thickness to age at death. However, interpopulation variances are unknown, and it is therefore not clear whether regressions based on a single population are applicable to individuals with different ancestries. MATERIALS AND

[Quantitative study of the mineral substance of the human dental cementum].

A study of the mineral substance of human dental cementum was made by various biophysical methods. In healthy teeth, average degree of mineralization of the cementum as well as crystallinity and fluoride content of its mineral substance, were found to increase as a function of age. This evolution, typical of the physiological ageing process of calcified tissues, is especially pronounced for the cementum, because of the absence of remodeling activity such as that occuring in bone tissue. Cementum of impacted or semi-impacted teeth was found to have a significantly lower degree of mineralization

Global proteome profiling of dental cementum under experimentally-induced apposition.

UNLABELLED: Dental cementum (DC) covers the tooth root and has important functions in tooth attachment and position. DC can be lost to disease, and regeneration is currently unpredictable due to limited understanding of DC formation. This study used a model of experimentally-induced apposition (EIA) in mice to identify proteins associated with new DC formation. Mandibular first molars were induced to super-erupt for 6 and 21days after extracting opposing maxillary molars. Decalcified and formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded mandible sections were prepared for laser capture microdissection. Microdi

Cementum matrix formation in vivo by cultured dental follicle cells.

Dental follicle is the fibrous tissue that surrounds the developing tooth germ, and it is believed to contain progenitors for cementoblasts, periodontal ligament cells, and osteoblasts. In this study, we report the presence of cementoblast progenitors in cultures of bovine dental follicle cells and demonstrate their differentiation capacity. Bovine dental follicle cells (BDFC) obtained from tooth germs by collagenase digestion were compared with bovine alveolar bone osteoblasts (BAOB) and bovine periodontal ligament cells (BPDL) in vitro and in vivo. In culture, BDFC exhibited low levels of al

Age estimation from dental cementum incremental lines and periodontal disease.

Age estimation by counting incremental lines in cementum added to the average age of tooth eruption is considered an accurate method by some authors, while others reject it stating weak correlation between estimated and actual age. The aim of this study was to evaluate this technique and check the influence of periodontal disease on age estimates by analyzing both the number of cementum lines and the correlation between cementum thickness and actual age on freshly extracted teeth. Thirty one undecalcified ground cross sections of approximately 30 µm, from 25 teeth were prepared, observed, phot

Determination of season at death using dental cementum increment analysis.

Dental cementum anchors teeth into their sockets via the periodontal ligament. In mammals, dental cementum is laid down in alternating opaque and translucent bands representing winter (dormant) and summer (growth) seasons. Each pair of bands represents 1 year of life. Estimates of age at death based on counting pairs of bands are highly accurate. If the timing of the transition between winter and summer bands could be identified in humans, dental cementum increment analysis could be used to specify the season at death. This pilot project attempts to determine when these transitions occur and t

Observations of the periodontal ligament and cementum in cats with dental resorptive lesions.

The etiology of feline dental resorptive lesions is unknown, but some evidence suggests that interactions between components of the periodontium may be initiating factors in the development of these lesions. In the present study, 22 clinically normal teeth were harvested from 7 cats. The teeth and periodontium were radiographed and examined histologically. In addition, 14 of the 22 teeth were examined histometrically. Two teeth were histologically normal with an open apical foramen and two were normal with a closed apical foramen. Histological evidence of periodontal ligament degeneration with

Formation of acellular root cementum in relation to dental and non-dental hard tissues in the rat.

After the periodontium of the rat was wounded, the formation of acellular extrinsic fiber cementum (AEFC) did not appear to be restricted to the hard dental tissues (pre-existing cementum, dentin, and enamel). Layers resembling AEFC were also deposited along the inner wall of the alveolar bone. At the time of observation (six weeks after being wounded), cells other than fibroblast-like cells could not be distinguished close to the newly formed AEFC-like layers. We suggest that the deposition of this material was related to the activity of periodontal ligament fibroblasts.

Comparative proteomic analysis of dental cementum from deciduous and permanent teeth.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Dental cementum (DC) is a mineralized tissue covering tooth roots that plays a critical role in dental attachment. Differences in deciduous vs. permanent tooth DC have not been explored. We hypothesized that proteomic analysis of DC matrix would identify compositional differences in deciduous (DecDC) vs. permanent (PermDC) cementum that might reflect physiological or pathological differences, such as root resorption that is physiological in deciduous teeth but can be pathological in the permanent dentition. METHODS: Protein extracts from deciduous (n = 25) and perma

Parturitions, menopause and other physiological stressors are recorded in dental cementum microstructure.

The life history pattern of recent humans is uniquely derived in many of its aspects including an extended post-reproductive lifespan combined with short interbirth intervals. A number of theories have been proposed to explain the evolution of this unusual pattern. However most have been difficult to test due to the fragmentary nature of the hominin fossil record and the lack of methods capable of inferring such later life history events. In search of a method we tested the hypothesis that the physiologically impactful events of parturition and menopause are recorded in dental cementum microst

Aberrantly elevated Wnt signaling is responsible for cementum overgrowth and dental ankylosis.

Vertebrate teeth are attached to the jawbones using a variety of methods but in mammals, a fibrous connection is the norm. This fibrous periodontal ligament (PDL) allows teeth to move in the jawbones in response to natural eruptive forces, mastication, and orthodontic tooth movement. In some disease states the PDL either calcifies or is replaced by a mineralized tissue and the result is ankylosis, where the tooth is fused to the alveolar bone. To understand how the PDL maintains this fibrous state, we examined a strain of mice in which tooth movement is arrested. DaβcatOt mice express a stabil
