Dental unit waterlines (DUWLs) are the conduits within the dental chair through which water derived from the municipal or other peripheral supply systems flows through the dental chair to reach the dental patient. The quality of the water so delivered must have a low pathogenic microbial burden so as to be safe for the patient and the dental personnel. Regulatory bodies have therefore set minimum standards for the quality of water that exits from DUWLs as part of routine infection control. Adopting a comprehensive approach that combines physical, chemical, and automated methodologies is recomm

BACKGROUND: Peri-implantitis has gained significant clinical attention in recent years. This disease is an inflammatory reaction to microorganisms around dental implants. Due to the limited accessibility, non-invasive antimicrobial strategies are of high interest. An unexpected approach to implant disinfection may evolve from electrolysis. Given the electrical conductivity of titanium implants, alkalinity or active oxidants can be generated in body fluids. We investigated the use of dental titanium implants as electrodes for the local generation of disinfectants. Our hypothesis was that electr

Dental aspirator kits are equipped with amalgam separators, which eliminate the particulate matter from the effluent. When the aspirator kits are disinfected, the disinfectant solution is in contact with the separated amalgams over night and over the weekend. Oxidizing components of the disinfectants dissolve mercury from the separated amalgam. The dissolved mercury is released into the environment along with the effluent on the beginning of the following workday. The degree of mercury remobilization depends on the amount and oxidizing power of the disinfectant components. The mercury concentr

The problem of potential pathogens in biofilm within dental unit waterlines is real. Even though some chemical agents can disinfect biofilms, there remains concern that all remnants of the biofilm matrix are not eliminated, even with periodic treatments, and the bacterial populations in dental unit waterlines recur rapidly. Toxic and caustic residual chemicals are also a concern. In multiple trials following overnight treatment of dental unit waterlines with Listerine Antiseptic (LA), recurrence was investigated by evaluating effluent and biofilm specimens by plate culture. The presence or abs

BACKGROUND: Transmission of microbial pathogens to patients from biofilm within dental unit waterlines, or DUWLs, is a concern. To reduce the risk of toxicity to dental patients when water coolants are used, numerous chemical agents have been tested. In a series of trials, the authors investigated the recurrence of microbial growth after treating DUWLs with sodium hypochlorite (bleach), or B; glutaraldehyde, or G; or isopropanol 15.3 percent, or I.
METHODS: The authors excised tubing sections from dental units in a general clinic. The tubing sections were evaluated at baseline and after overn

BACKGROUND: Microorganisms in dental unit water (DUW) play a significant role in dental bioaerosols. If the methods used to decontaminate DUW also help improve air quality in dental clinics is worth exploring. In this study, we aim to identify the source of bacteria in dental bioaerosols and investigate the impact of waterline disinfectants on the quantity and composition of bacteria in DUW and bioaerosols.
METHODS: Two dental chair units in a separate treatment room are installed with two different waterline decontamination systems, a plasma or iodine cartridge. The experiment was performed

BACKGROUND: In prosthodontics, dental impressions are essential for creating precise dental restorations. However, these impressions are susceptible to microbial contamination, which can pose a risk of infection to patients. Consequently, effective disinfection methods are crucial to prevent postoperative infections. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of various disinfection techniques for dental impressions used in prosthodontics.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 148 poured dental impressions were randomized into three disinfection groups: immersed in 0.5% sodium hypochlorite, 2%

This study aimed to clinically evaluate the disinfection efficacy of chlorine dioxide (ClO2) for used dental instruments. An imprint culture technique demonstrated that ultrasonic cleaning of intraorally applied dental mirrors in 0.02% ClO2 for 10 minutes resulted in compete removal of microorganisms for 10 subjects. Hepatitis C virus (HCV) RNA was detected by real-time polymerase chain reaction on periodontal curettes after subgingival scaling in four HCV-infected patients and was completely removed by the same treatment procedure. Therefore, the combination of ultrasonic cleaning with ClO2 m

The effectiveness of three different kind of sterilization or disinfection procedures was investigated in case of contaminated turbine handpieces. The results demonstrated that formaldehyde, isopropyl-alcohol and ethylenoxid are equally effective to disinfect or sterilize handpieces. The isopropyl-alcohol solving in pure ethyl-alcohol is one of the material which complies most of the requirements, as described by the authors.

Dental simulation head model laboratories are crucial for clinical simulation training for stomatological students, yet the maintenance of their dental unit waterlines (DUWLs) has been overlooked. This study investigated water contamination in DUWLs within these laboratories and proposed solutions. Water samples were collected from 12 dental chairs in three laboratories at three time points: the beginning, middle, and end of the semester. At the start of the semester, severe contamination was observed, with colony counts of 11,586[Formula: see text]1715 CFU/ml for high-speed handpieces and 537

Chemical disinfectants are widely advocated to reduce the microbial contamination in dental unit waterlines (DUWL). However, until now their efficacy has been poorly examined after long-term application. In this study, through quantitative PCR and high-throughput sequencing, both bacterial and fungal communities were profiled from 8- to 12-year-old DUWL treated with disinfectants commonly used by European dentists. Water was collected from the tap water supplying units to the output exposure point of the turbine handpiece following a stagnation period and dental care activity. Results showed t
