[The contents of caries-free fissures of human premolars and molars].

The contents of the fissures of occlusally caries-free human premolars and molars were examined for colour, consistency and removability, and under the microscope. The results obtained were brought in relation to the forms of the fissures. Superficial fissure contents contain micro-organisms, are similar to materia alba and may be considered as acquired. Contents from the depth of narrow fissures contain epithelial cell-like structures but no or very few bacteria and seem to be remnants from the time when the teeth were being formed.

Chapter 5.1: Physicochemical Interactions between Enamel and Oral Fluids.

Despite all the current knowledge in cariology, research is still being carried out nowadays trying to make dental enamel resistant to dental caries. Since enamel is mainly composed by a mineral, efforts have been put together to make it more resistant to acids produced by dental biofilm when exposed to dietary sugars. Fluoride was once thought to be a micronutrient that impacted caries resistance when incorporated in the tooth mineral, but we now know that the complex interactions at the mineral surface are most important. Every slightly soluble mineral, and enamel is no exception, has a beha

The pre- and posteruptive effects of fluoride in the caries decline.

The widespread availability of fluoride from many sources is accepted as a major reason for the caries decline among children in developed countries. There is still controversy, however, about its principal mode of action. This article reviews the evidence on fluoride's preeruptive and posteruptive effects, and suggests reasons for its continuing role in the caries decline. Early fluoridation studies accepted that fluoride acted preruptively through incorporation into developing enamel; but further research could not explain why fluoride levels were not clearly higher in enamel exposed to fluo

Surface changes during the arrest of active enamel carious lesions in vivo. A scanning electron microscope study.

The present study examines early enamel surface alterations taking place when active carious lesions enter an arrested stage. Orthodontic bands with a standardized space for plaque accumulation were used to produce incipient carious lesions on the buccal surface of all four first premolars of four young adolescents. The premolars were to be extracted for orthodontic reasons. After 4 weeks of local cariogenic challenge, all teeth were debanded. In each patient one tooth was extracted at the time of debanding. The remaining premolars were extracted 1, 2, and 3 weeks after re-exposure to the oral

Laboratory studies on the demineralization and remineralization of human enamel in relation to caries mechanisms.

These studies demonstrate that a significant degree of remineralization of both natural and artificial lesions can be achieved in vitro. Changing the calcium concentration of the synthetic calcifying fluid had a significant effect on both the degree of remineralization achieved and the site of the lesion affected. When the calcifying fluid contained 3 mM calcium, remineralization occurred mainly in the superficial part of the lesion. When a 1 mM calcium calcifying fluid was used on adjacent halves of the same lesion, remineralization occurred throughout the entire depth of the lesion. Under th

Effect of iron on bovine enamel and on the composition of the dental biofilm formed "in situ".

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated in situ the effect of iron (Fe) on the reduction of demineralization of bovine enamel, as well as on the composition of dental biofilm. DESIGN AND METHODS: Twelve volunteers were included in this blind crossover study, which was conducted in two stages of 14 days each. For each stage, the volunteers received palatal appliances containing four blocks of bovine enamel (4 mm x4 mm x 2.5 mm). Six volunteers dripped a solution of 15 mmol L(-1) ferrous sulphate onto the fragments and the remaining six dripped deionized water (eight times per day). After five minu

Biological factors in dental caries enamel structure and the caries process in the dynamic process of demineralization and remineralization (part 2).

Dental caries is a complex disease process that afflicts a large proportion of the world's population, regardless of gender, age and ethnicity, although it does tend to affect more indivduals with a low socioeconomic status to a greater extent. The physicochemical properties of the mineral comprising the tooth surface and subsurface modulate the development, arrestment and remineralization of dental caries. Post-eruption maturation of enamel surfaces and exposed root surfaces is important in order for more susceptible mineral phases to be modified by incorporation of soluble fluoride from the

Scanning electron microscope and electron microprobe study of reactions of stannous fluoride and stannous chloride with dental enamel.

Stannous fluoride but not stannous chloride has shown a caries inhibiting effect in animal studies. The effect of aqueous solutions of stannous fluoride and stannous chloride on dental enamel surfaces was investigated by scanning electron microscope and analytical electron microprobe. Some large globules and a continuous layer of small globules were observed after stannous fluoride treatment. The large globules were soluble in both water and alkali, whereas the small ones were only soluble in alkali. Both fluoride and tin were found to be present on the enamel surfaces by the electron micropro

Stability and mutual conversion of enamel apatite and brushite at 20 degrees C as a function of pH of the aqueous phase.

By calculation, apatite is more soluble than brushite at low pH and less soluble at high pH. Apatite, therefore should be able to transform spontaneously to brushite at low pH and brushite to apatite at high pH. The aim was to describe this mutual conversion as related to the aqueous phase composition. Powdered enamel, brushite or 1:1 mixtures of the two salts were suspended in distilled water for up to 12 weeks at 20 degrees C, pH was adjusted to 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 or 10 by drops of perchloric acid or potassium hydroxide. The calcium and the phosphate concentrations and pH were determined, and

Scanning electron microscopic study of the effect of salivary pellicle on enamel erosion.

A bovine tooth model system was used to study the effect of experimental salivary pellicle on enamel erosion. Test blocks with varnish-covered control surfaces in each specimen were immersed into an acidic cola beverage (pH 2.6) for 120 min, either with or without the pellicle which was grown for 7 days by using clarified human saliva. After immersion, the pellicle was removed from some specimens with 10% sodium hypochlorite (20 h at 20 degrees C) and ultrasonic bath (60 s) to study its effect on erosion. All specimens were then studied in the scanning electron microscope. The specimens withou

Tooth Enamel Demineralization: Caries and Erosion from the Viewpoint of Chemistry.

The demineralization of tooth enamel is the primary consequence of dental caries, leading to cavities and finally tooth loss. Erosive tooth wear from acidic beverages and food is another factor that degrades enamel. In both cases, an acidic environment leads to etching and the final dissolution of tooth mineral, i.e., hydroxyapatite. Here, this process is discussed from a chemical perspective, taking into account the solubility of calcium phosphate and the presence of the pellicle (protein layer) and plaque (bacterial biofilms), which both affect the dissolution rate. While low pH is definitel

The Impact of Vitamin Deficiencies on Oral Manifestations in Children.

Vitamins play a vital role in human health, particularly in the development and maintenance of oral health in children. These nutrients are broadly categorized into fat-soluble and water-soluble types, crucial for children's well-being. The objective of this study is to investigate the impact of vitamin deficiencies on the oral health of children, focusing on how these deficiencies contribute to various oral health issues and determining the relationship between specific vitamin shortages and oral diseases. Findings indicate that shortages in vitamins A and D lead to enamel issues and a higher

Effect of acid type on kinetics and mechanism of dental enamel demineralization.

The influence of acid type (pKa effects) of weak organic acid buffers on dissolution kinetics of dental enamel was critically examined for rigorous testing of the behavioral validity of the physical model of Patel et al. (1987). Quantitative evaluation of this model indicated that monitoring initial dissolution rates was a viable approach to critical testing of the model. Initial dissolution rates were determined in 0.1 mol/L acetate (pKa = 4.77), benzoate (pKa = 4.20), and salicylate (pKa = 2.98) buffers (pH = 4.50, mu = 0.50), with ground bovine enamel blocks of known surface area mounted in

Dental fluorosis: chemistry and biology.

This review aims at discussing the pathogenesis of enamel fluorosis in relation to a putative linkage among ameloblastic activities, secreted enamel matrix proteins and multiple proteases, growing enamel crystals, and fluid composition, including calcium and fluoride ions. Fluoride is the most important caries-preventive agent in dentistry. In the last two decades, increasing fluoride exposure in various forms and vehicles is most likely the explanation for an increase in the prevalence of mild-to-moderate forms of dental fluorosis in many communities, not the least in those in which controlle
