[Recommendations for basic emergency equipment in the dental office].

Medical emergencies in the dentist's office are a primary concern for dental surgeons. Since each individual therapist is personally responsible for the management of those eventualities, they must be properly trained to handle them. Prevention is still the most effective method for avoiding them, with clinical examination as the prime basis for their management. Some current factors that increase the possibility of office emergencies include: a raise in life expectancy rates, thus increasing the number of patients with chronic diseases; multiple and complex therapeutic regimes; patients under

[Can dental equipment interfere with correct functioning of an ICD?].

An implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) is often placed in patients at high risk of ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation. An ICD is potentially sensitive to electromagnetic interference (EMI) from dental equipment. Between 2000 to 2020, this was investigated in 7 in vitro studies and 4 in vivo studies. Most dental equipment appears to be safe for routine use in patients with an ICD. However, caution seems appropriate with regard to the use of piezoelectic and magnetostrictive scalers as some can cause EMI up to a distance of 20 to 45 centimeter. Use of an electrotome ap

Report on base metal alloys for crown and bridge applications: benefits and risks. Council on Dental Materials, Instruments, and Equipment.

Despite the widespread use of nickel-based alloys, claims for the safety of these alloys have not yet been accepted universally. The allergenic effects of nickel on dental patients and the potential toxic effects of nickel and beryllium on laboratory technicians continue to cause concern within the dental profession. The systemic response to metallic nickel and nickel compounds as a result of intraoral corrosion and dissolution of nickel-based restorations over extended periods have not been studied adequately. The dental profession may be overgeneralizing the relative safety of nickel alloys
