Musculoskeletal problems among Ontario dental hygienists.

Two U.S. surveys suggested that dental hygienists (DHs) may suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), but these studies did not use validated questionnaires, adjust for confounders, or include external controls. We conducted a questionnaire survey of all 2,142 DHs belonging to the Ontario Dental Hygienists' Association, and a referent group of 305 dental assistants (DAs), who do not scale teeth. The Standardized Nordic Questionnaire was used as the basis for asking about musculoskeletal symptoms. The response rates in the two groups were identical. Of the DHs, 7.0% had been told by a physician

Fibromyalgia syndrome: considerations for dental hygienists.

Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a neurosensory disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain. Typically persistent fatigue, depression, limb stiffness, non-refreshing sleep and cognitive deficiencies are also experienced. Oral symptoms and pain are common, requiring adaptations in patient management strategies and treatment interventions. Appropriate dental hygiene care of patients suffering with this disorder is contingent upon an understanding of disease epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical characteristics, oral signs and symptoms, as well as treatment approaches. Information-seeking strategies of dental hygienists.

As health care practitioners, dental hygienists need information-gathering skills and the confidence to both perform literature searches in Internet databases and assess the results in order to utilize the wealth of scientific literature that supports evidence-based practice. The aim of this study was to assess the information-seeking strategies of dental hygienists. A self-administered electronic survey of thirty-eight questions was sent to 5,007 licensed dental hygienists in District III of the American Dental Hygienists' Association. The overall response rate was 7.9 percent (396/5,007). Mo

Musculoskeletal disorders among dental hygienists in Canada.

BACKGROUND: Dental hygiene is a physically demanding profession that places dental hygienists at risk of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). Study objectives were to establish the patterns and frequencies of self-reported occupation-related MSDs among dental hygienists in Canada and determine what MSD prevention training is provided in the curricula of accredited dental hygiene schools in Canada. METHODS: An online, quantitative cross-sectional survey was distributed to registered dental hygienists in Canada to assess prevalence and types of occupational MSDs. Additionally, a phone/email qualit

Dental hygienists--independent practice and pain control services.

In 1990, 78 dental hygienists who were members of the Dutch Dental Hygiene Association and working in an independent practice received a questionnaire (response rate: 79%) about the administration of local anesthesia. The main aim of this study was to determine the need for this service prior to deep scaling. The results of the survey showed that the need to administer local anesthesia for this purpose is limited in spite of the large number of patients with periodontal problems treated in independent dental hygiene practices. In most circumstances the cooperation with the dentist is satisfact

Musculoskeletal Disorders among Italian Dentists and Dental Hygienists.

Dental professionals often perform physically and mentally demanding therapeutical procedures. They work maintaining muscular imbalance and asymmetrical positions for a long time. The aim of the study was to describe the prevalence and the factors associated to work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSD) among Italian dental professionals and the most affected body regions. A cross-sectional observational study was conducted between March 2019 and February 2020. The Nordic Musculoskeletal questionnaire (NMQ) was implemented with questions related to working habits (dental occupation, working

Knowledge of halitosis among dentists and dental hygienists.

Bad breath is a widespread condition that has been increasingly discussed among professionals and in the mass media in the last few years. In nine of ten cases, halitosis originates intraorally; hence it has become an important topic of study in the education and training of dentists and dental hygienists. However, the de facto knowledge of professionals has never been examined until today. 750 dentists and dental hygienists from Switzerland, Germany, and France were personally interviewed. Their knowledge of halitosis was assessed using a specifically designed questionnaire. In general, consi

Four complete mailings of the instrument resulted in a 67% response rate, of which 77% were useable (n = 498). Respondents were asked if they agreed or disagreed with statements on caries etiology and preventive procedures, and also asked to

BACKGROUND: Since the outbreak of COVID-19, how to reduce the risk of spreading viruses and other microorganisms while performing aerosolgenerating procedures (AGPs) has become a challenging question within the dental and dental hygiene communities. The purpose of this position paper is to summarize the evidence of the effectiveness of various mitigation methods used to reduce the risk of infection transmission during AGPs in dentistry. METHODS: The authors searched 6 databases-MEDLINE, EMBASE, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar-for relevant scientific evidence publi
