Characteristics of an in vitro dental pellicle.

Procedures developed for in vitro pellicle formation in intact enamel proved useful for relating qualitiative characteristics of dental pellicle to a number of factors. Coronal surfaces of extracted human molars from experimental and control groups were pumiced, sterilized, and incubated for two hours at 37 C in parotid saliva and distilled water, respectively. Pellicle proteins were desorbed sequentially with water and 0.2 M sodium phosphate, with a pH of 7.0. Polyacrylamide disc electrophoresis of the desorbates yielded distinct patterns, indicating selective adsorption of proteins from sali

Discoloration of dental pellicle by tannic acid.

The ability of tannic acid to discolor pellicle was studied in vitro and in vivo. Freshly extracted teeth were submerget in solutions of tannic acid, and in the clinical study individuals rinsed three times daily with 0.1% or 0.2% tannic acid. It was fount that 0.2% tannic acid caused brownish discolorations within 10-12 days both in vitro and in vivo. Discolored pellicle material collected from the in vivo test group was shown to contain furaldehyde after hydrolysis. The origin of the furaldehyde is not ascertained, but could be due to the presence of dietary deposits, transformation of pelli

Composition of enamel pellicle from dental erosion patients.

Oral health is dependent upon a thin mobile film of saliva on soft and hard tissues. Salivary proteins adhere to teeth to form the acquired enamel pellicle which is believed to protect teeth from acid erosion. This study investigated whether patients suffering diet-induced dental erosion had altered enamel pellicles. Thirty patients suffering erosion were compared to healthy age-matched controls. Subjects wore a maxillary splint holding hydroxyapatite and human enamel blocks for 1 h. The acquired enamel pellicle was removed from the blocks and compared to the natural incisor pellicle. Interplay between experimental dental pellicles and stannous-containing toothpaste on dental erosion-abrasion.

The interaction between stannous-containing dentifrice slurry and experimentally formed pellicles was investigated on enamel and root dentin using an erosion-remineralization-abrasion cycling model. The remineralizing solutions contained no proteins (negative control), mucin, casein, mucin + casein or albumin, for experimental pellicle formation. Toothbrushing was performed with fluoride toothpaste, with (TP + Sn) and without (TP) 3,500 ppm Sn. TP + Sn reduced surface loss for both enamel and root dentin (p < 0.05). The association between TP + Sn and albumin resulted in a significantly lower

Thickness of acquired salivary pellicle as a determinant of the sites of dental erosion.

Dental erosion shows a typical distribution pattern within the dental arches. Tooth protection from erosion by salivary pellicle has been shown in vitro, but the hypothesis that pellicle may differ quantitatively at sites of erosion has not been investigated. This study aimed to determine the thickness of acquired salivary pellicle within the dental arches, investigate the possible relationship of this thickness to the distribution and severity of erosion within the arches, and confirm the protective effect of pellicle against dental erosion. Eight enamel blocks were produced from each of 5 bo

Studies on the organic polyanionic constituents of human acquired dental pellicle.

Extracts of acquired dental pellicle were obtained by a two-step procedure. Pellicle formed on cleaned teeth was first extracted using 2 M CaCl2, and the remainder then removed by scraping followed by solubilization in 5 per cent (w/v) EDTA. The 2 M CaCl2 extract contained high-molecular-weight glycoprotein which was present in only trace amounts in the EDTA extract. Cellulose-acetate electrophoresis of both extracts revealed low-molecular weight protein which contained phosphate. This protein tentatively identified as a phosphoprotein, disappeared as the pellicle matured. The findings have im

Auger electron spectroscopy of iron in dental pellicle from stainers and non-stainers.

Stainers and non-stainers were selected on the basis of their individual tendency to develop extrinsic tooth discolorations from a chlorhexidine mouth rinse. Pellicle was allowed to form in vivo on dental enamel slabs in both stainers and non-stainers. The slabs were then exposed to chlorhexidine 0.2% and a neutral iron salt solution extraorally either once or until a brownish discoloration appeared from the stainers. The pellicle was examined for its content and distribution of iron by Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). Pellicle from stainers showed higher concentrations of iron than pellicle

Acquired enamel pellicle engineering and the use of vitamin e as a preventive strategy for dental erosion.

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVE: Dental erosion is a multifactorial condition in which early demineralization events occur at the enamel-environment interface, highlighting the relevance of the acquired enamel pellicle (AEP) as a biological modulator of erosion susceptibility. This narrative review aimed to synthesize current biochemical and experimental evidence on AEP engineering as a preventive strategy against dental erosion, with particular emphasis on the role of vitamin E as a lipophilic modulator of the pellicle organic matrix. DATA AND SOURCES: A structured narrative review was conducted foll

Tooth surface-pellicle lipids and their role in the protection of dental enamel against lactic-acid diffusion in man.

The lipid content and composition of the enamel pellicle from caries-resistant (CR) and caries-susceptible (CS) subjects and their effect on its ability to retard the diffusion of lactic acid were investigated. Lipids accounted for 22.2 per cent of the dry weight of CR pellicle and 23.7 per cent of CS pellicle. The content of glycolipids in both groups was similar but CR pellicle contained 42 per cent less neutral lipids and 31 per cent less phospholipids. CR lipids had a higher content of cholesterol, cholesterol esters and sphingomyelin, whereas CS pellicle was richer in free fatty acids and

Saliva-acquired pellicle inspired multifunctional gargle with wet adhesion, photodynamic antimicrobial, and In situ remineralization properties for dental caries prevention.

Dental caries is primarily caused by cariogenic bacteria metabolizing carbohydrates to produce acidic substances that erode the dental hard tissues. Traditional remineralization treatments often have limited efficacy due to their lack of antibacterial activity. According to the Interrupting Dental Caries (IDC) theory, ideal caries-preventive materials should possess both antibacterial and remineralizing properties. Furthermore, effective adhesion to dental surfaces is crucial. Inspired by the wet adhesion properties of the salivary acquired pellicle, we developed a multifunctional gargle named

Acquired salivary pellicle and oral diseases: A literature review.

As soon as saliva contacts the teeth surface, salivary proteins adhere to the tooth surface to form acquired salivary pellicle. The formation of this acquired salivary pellicle is a dynamic and selective process of macromolecular adsorption and desorption. Although acquired salivary pellicle contains proteins and peptides, it also contains lipids, and other macro-molecules, all of which contribute to its protective properties. Acquired salivary pellicle is related to the development of common oral diseases, such as erosion, dental caries, and periodontal disease. Acquired salivary pellicle act

Protein and bacteria binding to exposed root surfaces and the adjacent enamel surfaces in vivo.

Exposure of root surfaces due to inflammatory tissue breakdown is a clinical characteristic of periodontitis. The gingival margin may further recede during treatment. Pellicles and early dental plaque on enamel surfaces of periodontitis patients have previously been described. The binding properties of exposed root surfaces, which may affect the incorporation of proteins from especially the GCF into the enamel pellicle and thereby early dental plaque formation are largely unknown. The aim of this study was to examine if exposed root surfaces could affect pellicle and initial dental plaque form
